Concealed carry is such a huge topic right now and we have loads of new firearms owners in the mix. Here’s just some basic knowledge on why size matters for defense!
It was funny how he apologized for having a table full of S&Ws. "Jerry, we all know you really like Smithies. You've been their star for 30 years. It's okay." 😆
I'm 75, a Vietnam Vet and have been shooting since I was 10, so I like to think I'm at least 'familiar' with firearms. IMHO we are living in the "Golden Age" of handguns. There are competent, reliable and accurate handguns in all the popular calibers at every budget level. Sub $500, $400 and even $300 offerings are plentiful from several manufacturers. Obviously far more expensive terrific guns are out there too for those with deeper pockets. It's all good.
ChicagoRandy, you are right on. Golden edge for gun lovers, so many good choises and all prices. Very different to last century. Regards from Guatemala
Even more importantly, we've been able to dispense with myths that had persisted since the 1800s. They evaporated in the light of new data and millions of new, serious shooters vs. "smoky room rumors" and old assumptions. I am 68, and I know I've had my entire understanding of ballistics vastly improved since even a decade ago.
Excellent presentation Sir! Thank you. As a retired LEO firearms instructor and an IPSC competitor years ago. Also was apart of the Dave Chirillo gorilla's as range officer for 4 world shoots.
Hey Jerry I know you're a smith guy , i only have the 1 Smith and it's the 5906 that my dad carried at the police department , I received it when he passed. I do like it alot , very smooth and racey .
I'm still using the Chip McCormick Shooting Stars mags I bought for my 1911 back in the early 1990s. Never had a single FTF with thousands of 200gr LSWC rounds I used to shoot in bowling pin or USPSA matches. Lately, I've been buying Wilson Combat mags for my 9mm 1911. While I love 1911s, I really love S&W revolvers. My prize is a 625, internals & carry action job by Ron Power, and I used to have a 629 Power Custom Grand Master. I've also got a sweet Model 57, though I don't shoot it as often as I'd like. I really LOVE your RUclips channel!
Size does matter! Tell Smith to bring back the to 40 S&W in the new Shield Plus. I would be at the front of the line. I am still keeping my 40S&W Gen1 Shield, my go-to.
I retired from LE 10 years ago but had 35 year in when I fully retired. I did get to shoot a lot of revolvers and Semi- autos over the years. Based on todays current, average, semi-autos my top three are the Glock 19, Beretta 92X, Centurian and M&P, 2.0, metal. Please note I have not tried the M&P, 2.0, poly models yet. The Beretta is buttery smooth and a joy to shoot. The M&P Metal is close to the Beretta but is striker fired so no de-cocking or SA/DA to mess with for those not used to that. The Glock is slightly smaller and lighter than the Beretta or M&P Metal so I still carry the Glock 19 more but if the M&P, Metal came out as a compact I would for sure have one.
Great advice. In Chicago, we carry small, concealable firearms. The Shield is my biggest carry gun. It's my winter gun. 357/38 snubbie for a revolver, and fall. Gotta have at least 1 revolver. Baby 380 for the motorcycle and deep concealment. Small pockets etc. It really depends on where you live as to what you carry. Smaller city near more wild animals, you'll need to carry something bigger than a snubbie 38.
I watched your video on the bodyguard, hitting at 200 yrds. Iconic. I had to git me some, and its been a benchmark blast. The always-carry "size matters" pocket safe shooter. After a 1000 rounds, they break in superbly. Thnx!
I learned something recently. I was at my local convenience store and I’m very familiar with the employees and the regular customers (doesn’t help I work across the street from the store) anyway, one day someone that looks very shady comes in wearing a tight t-shirt and conceal carrying a full size pistol that I could TELL was a 1911, IWB in the 3 o’clock position. When he left the store I asked the employees and the other customers in line if they noticed because I found it comical. And to my surprise that didn’t. They had no idea what I was talking about. So moral of the story is, if you carry a larger gun and it prints a little bit nobody is going to notice other than other ccw holders and probably 90% of them won’t notice either.
I love my 1911s and my 2011s, I carry my 1911 with a shoulder holster if I’m wearing a suit, otherwise my every day is a shield in .45 it’s a bit of a beast, but with practice, it’s very controllable, great video Jerry
There are a lot of pretty big guns on that table. If the topic is CC, there are some fine “pocket pistols” and “belly guns” that deserve consideration.
Thank you sir, you always have good advice. What do you think about these .410 revolvers for home. Do you think they are effective? At least you don't have to worry about a bullet going through a neighbor's wall.
Just made me think I never setup a carry rig for my S&W Model 36 .38 Special..basically a detective special. I do have numerous platforms for carry situations, the smallest being a Sig P938 SOA in 9mm using the 7 round extended magazine carried Condition 1 similar to a 1911. My normal EDC is a Sig P365. The first handgun I ever bought was a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum 4” stainless. I used to carry that in a shoulder rig in winter months. I’ve also carried an H&K VP9LE, a Sig P220 Carry SAS SAO in .45 ACP, and I even have a carry rig for my S&W M&P M2.0 10mm. Just depends on the situation.
Excelent info. for choosing a carry gun, specially for new gun lovers. There are many things to consider, but you can always choose grown and keep buying till. you get the best for you 😅
Many of us, the CCW’s carry many types of semi automatic pistols. Like most of the firearms we practice with are striker fired and examples such as Sig Sauer and Glock with tilted barrel applications. Reason for this story is to share using Beretta PX 4 Storm pistols and that is with a rotated barrel in 9mm/.40 SW. You have also the compacts sizes and you favorite .45 ACP in compact. The sub-compacts loose your rotated barrel system. The recoil of this pistol system is much more manageable. Yes, you are SA\DA, but who does not like a great challenge.
Great guns and very good choices to consider for carry ! Myself I like an all steel gun and I don’t really mind the weight ! I’am considering a J frame for carry , I’ve shot a few and liked them !
The 32 H&R is a good ctg too! over the years I’ve fired several ! I’ve never fired a .327 Federal mag just yet ! The .32 caliber goes years and years back !
One of the greatest and simultaneously worst feelings in the world is having your hand rubbed raw by a J-Frame. One of the more obscure examples of 'hurts so good.'
who in their right mind would EVER even attempt to "invade" Jerrys space...man is a legend "fastest man alive"...don't want him shooting at ya ..you want him shooting with you......that said myself when i'm carrying i want the biggest i can comfortably carry at the time ....
For edc I carry a 19 gen 5 with the dayglo sights. While on duty at the range (Northern MI) I carry a GP100 with handload 158gn Hornady XTP's in a OWB kydex holster. Why? Critters. Large critters. The chance of encountering a bear on our archery range (3/4 mile loop through the woods) is low but never zero.
if we pick a gun brand like glock since it has a easy comparison chart.... is it that much harder to conceal a long slide (glock 17L) vs full size gun (glock 17) vs compact (glock 19) vs subcompact (glock 26) vs subcompact (glock 43)? or of you use a g26 then put a full size mag? personally i find it just as easy to conceal a full size as a subcompact.
Jerry is an American living legend. God bless Jerry and his family. Smith and Wesson is blessed to have Jerry as a representative.
It was funny how he apologized for having a table full of S&Ws. "Jerry, we all know you really like Smithies. You've been their star for 30 years. It's okay." 😆

Learned something new about the 1911 magazine. Thank you Jerry😊

Is anyone else looking at the ammo boxes behind Jerry and hearing I’m proud to be an American playing from somewhere? I’m tearing up here!
I feel the same way.
You are just simply the best Jerry. I can't think of any other way to describe you.
Thanks Jerry for the information you're the man

My first handgun was a Kimber 1911. The shop owner suggested Chip McCormick mags. 20+yrs later, flawless.

I’m so happy to see more videos from you Jerry. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your expertise. Well presented, very informative.
Thank you and you are very important to everyone.
That 1911 with the full sized optic. I don't think Danny Glover in an 80s cut suit could conceal that beast.

I carry my old model 36 almost daily
Love Jerry!! Just bought a n-frame model 57. I enjoy it.
That's why the 4-in shield plus is pistol peak. Suitability of bigger guns with the concealability of the Glock 43X or better.
Lot of bear 🐻 round my parts
Usually got a 10 mm
Everything changes in Bear county
Great point about the 10mm going thru stuff and taking a lot to stop it.
