Exploring Crete Island, Greece | Is It Worth Visiting?
If you want to visit Crete or anywhwere else in Greece, when it is not so windy, you msut visit in the period May-late July. August begins the windy season in most regions.
I really believe that Crete is the most beautiful, diverse and worth to visit place in Greece despite the fact that I' m from Macedonia in northern Greece. It has everything! Some of the most famous and beautiful Greek beaches, mountains, gorges, caves, palm forest, monuments, picturesque towns and villages, history, wonderful people, delicious food, wonderful weather, every kind of hotel... Just explore it!
What would be your favourite placed to go? Because I am going there for 8 days in a week!
@@stefan1924 In which place on Crete you booked a hotel?
@@eleniasimop I haven't booked one yet. I was planing on booking a few different hostels in different places.
@@stefan1924 in my opinion try Chania region. There is a picturesque old center and Venician harbor with many little bars and restaurants. Also in the same region there are the Samaria gorge which you may hike and some of the most beautiful Cretan beaches: Falasarna, Balos, Elafonisi. (Google them) You may use Chania city as your base.
I don't like hostels and I don't know if there are any. I would prefer Airbnb.
It's impossible to see all Crete has to offer in 8 days. There is a big distance from one corner to the other and the roads aren't very good in some cases.
@@eleniasimop Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I have Chania on my list, so I'll make sure to go there. You're probably right and it's best to focus on one or two regions.
I lived on Crete for 8 years on the American Air Force Base (Now Closed). I returned last year after leaving almost 30 years ago. Loved it and met some of my Greek Friends. My wife was impressed I could still speak a little Greek. Nice job Gabe.
Went there in late August, slept in a car driving around the mountains and rural Crete. Best vacation of my life.
This is my kind of travel, but I don't like doing it alone. Are there some websites or apps I can find others like you? Back in the day I feel it was easier to find people to travel together, but maybe it's just my nostalgia talking dunno
FeelingShred Not sure. I lucked out randomly asking a friend, who said yes.
I love Crete. The people are so friendly.
Yes..one of the best place in the world to visit!!
Elounda is one of the prettiest loveliest places in crete on lassiti plateau
Its the most beautiful place i have ever been in my entire life!
Visited Chania last year and I am still reminiscing on it’s beautiful and charm. The food and beaches were spectacular.
I want to get to Chania :)
cretan food music and raki at Chania Old harbour...this year you must do it again
My American friend life there....

N East Crete is beautiful. Starting with Elounda Bay which is stunning. If you drive East to Sitia - there is a beautiful beach with palm trees! Gorgeous.
The best island in the med. ...
so many places to explore and crazy beaches
Would you love it to live in crete?
omg, I'm in greece too, travelling. Nafplio. Been very windy here too. Went up to the palamidi fortress yesterday and felt like i was gonna get blown off the walls.
Stalida in Crete is magical
Hi Gabriel, I and my wife were in Crete on May, we thought it was a lovely place, where in the area where the square was at the end of the video, in front of the lighthouse there were carriages, everything looked clean, the beach clean, a shame That tourist sites do not give cleanliness that attract thousands of tourists. Greetings and keep uploading videos of your adventures. I am Panamanian and we loved that you came to our country. A hug!
Crete is 1 of my all time favorite places👍
very good food music and many many beaches to visit
It is worth it, and it is worth it watching these videos as well!
Thanks Gab....my family and I were in Crete in early September.
When you were walking down the alley way with the T shirts and looking in the restaurants , this is where we stayed In a really nice airbnb.
Thanks for flash back👍👍
The mosque building no longer operates as such .. it has art exhibits. Shame the sea was rough its such a pretty harbour but very commercial. Greece is wonderful and has such a variety of islands and it seems like you are visiting quite a few.
www.west-crete.com/chania-mosque.htm
crete has the most beautiful beaches in europe: elafonisi and balos bay. i went to elafonisi this summer - the place is a paradise on earth, the sand is pink and the water is crystal clear almost neon turquoise. truly breathtaking. and the mountains of crete are gorgeous as well.
Was in Crete a few days ago; I should of stayed there longer. Crete has so much character and many places to explore. Much better than Santorini.
My friend, totally different islands
When I was in Crete I stayed at a town called Georgioupolis I think not too far from Chania.
Hi Gabriel, You really can't go wrong on any of these Greek islands. The beaches are all wonderful people very friendly the food is really good there are really no bad choices.
Just came back from Crete. It was amazing!!
Did you have any favourite place?
@@stefan1924 Any part of Crete has its own spark. The west coast has some incredible beaches. On the East side there is a unique beach full of palm trees called Vai.
@@stefan1924 I'd suggest you to visit herakleion specially the castle of koules
At the same time I was in Chora Sfakion Crete the weather was the same ..I was born in Chania I hope you comeback next year to give you a tour in my village Agii Apostoli...Google it people call it Paradise..enjoy your stay Gabriel
Crete is lovely, my favorite Greek island! Its fine to take a small car up to Bellos beach, just go steady.
Lovely people Greece people ✌️
Definitely agree.
These are Crete people not Greece people. Cretes are descendants of Minoan kingdom.
@@chiasanzes9770 Minoans were definitely Greeks as the modern Cretans Greeks
Hi
@@angelasandridge2985 hi
From first impressions, Crete almost feels like, greek, italy, venice, egypt to me.
Egypt mostly in the palms and southern climate ofc, but yeah.
Extremely interesting mix. A true crossroads of ancient civilizations (not to mention the Minoans).
Have done the same thing for a week, between my yacht charters, have been skippering charter yachts throughout the Greek Islands for last 25 years, recommend spending time on Crete, very well presented. Regards Alan from New Zealand.
You going this summer? I want to know more. Thanks
I've been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time in Crete for work. Probably coming up on about 4-6 months total. I've loved it every time I've been. The people are friendly, the food is great and the island is beautiful. Is it worth visiting? Yes, a hundred times yes! The bigger cities are nice to see and spend some time in, but the real gems are the little outlying villages and towns along the way. If you go be sure to visit the southern coast of the island. Much different than northern Crete, not better just different.
I love Greece,I did visit most of it .but crete did scratch my heart ,you must see is beautiful...thank you for you video
The youths! It looks lovely there
I went to Crete last year in gouvez , very quite place with a nice beach . I loved it . You can take an excersion to a small island called " spinalonga " which was the last leper colony in Europe .
you must visit them again
was in crete last week asnd stayed at the mitsis laguna.. :) we travelled to chania and rethymno...lovely places :)
The track that leads to Balos beach is ok to drive , I did it in a small hire car there is a car park at the top, and path leads down to Balos beach . Also elafonissi is another great beach .
You are crazy !
Beautiful Greece
Missing Crete :(
I've not visited Crete yet. But really want to get there within the next couple of years.
Matala is another great village a hippy village with lot of history about the caves the hippies lived in .
Pretty sure Gabriel went to Matala on his previous visit to Crete.
ruclips.net/video/Hf6oLXA_2IU/видео.html
And two amazing beaches right next to Matala. Komos which if you stay till the sun goes down, you will not be disappointed and red beach, one of the top nude braches in the world.
You should visit Mirtos, its near Ierapetra (southeast coast) of crete. Mirtos is a wonderful nice littel town. Its very traditionell, how i heard. I lov crete. Its one of the most best places on earth.
Crete is so lovely. Hopefully the big mean scary Minotaur bully is not lurking about. I can see why Greece is your favorite. Do you imagine yourself retiring there? I could just stay for life casting a baited hook enjoying a chillaxing peaceful existence with no hate, bullying, backstabbing, nor any of this nonsense back in America. That is a real culture over there...
Love Crete! Such a beautiful island, wouldn't mind visiting again! 👍
of course you must do it...we hope covid will finish soon !!
we went into the mosque @ 23:25 - it's normally used for selling things, and was an art gallery when we went
very beautiful
Hello Gabriel, long time no talk.
Hope you enjoyed Crete :)
Two days ago, we (wifey and me) got back to Sweden from an eight week trip to Crete. Good thing that you take your time to actually explore the island, which is amazing (if you get out of the tourist areas). Good thing also that you mentioned that one who didn't like Crete. As you said...probably went to a resort and stayed within 100 meters from the hotel room...
We got to see a looot of Crete during our weeks there. First five weeks in Iraklio, then Malia, then Akrotiri, then Chania (Iraklio became our favourite place in all of Greece, and we've travelled a lot for many years. It got to our hearts.
Let me tell you, during eight weeks, we drove some 5000 kms on a small motorcycle scooter, all across the island (sometimes several times to the same places, like Elounda and Agios Nikolaos), through tens and tens of small mountain villages, the Lasithi plateau etc etc.
BUT!!!
We also drove to Balos beach last weekend, on a 50 cc scooter... So I can guarantee you that you can do it by car. It was THE worst trip we've ever made on a scooter (and we've made many), and I took a toe on every muscle in my body to drive, but we did it. There are hundreds of cars parked along the last bit of road to Balos, so if the rental company told you it couldn't be done, they're full of sh*t ;)
They just say so because they're afraid the car (or scooter) will get damaged. Won't happen, but the road is not exactly a dirt road, it's more like a stone road with dirt between the rocks. It took me some hour and a half to navigate the scooter the seven kms, between pointy rocks and loose stones.
We're still very happy to have done it. It was lika a "shut the f*** up moment*, when you walked the last bit over a ridge, and Balos opened up in front of you - some 200 meters below you. Stunning! Amazing!
We just stood and looked, jaw dropped, for a good minute - without saying a word.
As you know yourself, pictures and movies can't give justice to those amazing places in the world.
Anyway - Balos is reachable. Crete is fantastic.
Everything can be done with a light mc scooter ;)
Have a very pleasant good trip whereever you go next.
Cool, next time I'll make Balos Beach happen, one way or another, as long as the waves aren't crazy. Tons more to see in Crete the next trip.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos I think that Balos lagoon is somewhat protected from waves, and wind, from the surrounding mountains, and maybe even Gramvousa.
Well, enough to see on Crete to last a lifetime. The most amazing water however, did we find at Kolokytha close to Elounda. A small hike over a hill, just a couple of hundred meters. A pair of non organized small sand/gravel beaches with almost invisible water. Not famous, but stunning.
I am Greek and i love going to Crete. As you say you need a few weeks to explore the island. If you only have a week hmmm dont go. You end up in an all inclusive hotel (bliah) I have been in crete (i live in Athens ) 50 times all ready and still have not seen it all.For me the best area is Rethimno .So much to do.And a must is the mountain villages. As you can see i love this island sooo much. Good travels everybody!!!!
I was just recently on holiday in Palaichora and you made me remember how fantastic a little town it is :) Thanks Gabe!
Cool.
OMG When we were in Xania the water was CRYSTAL CLEAR we could see fishes
Alex Decouvre In Greece at the end of August we have what is called meltemia which means is windly here It lasts about two weeks and back to normal again. Today 26th of September summer again... PS Meltemia in the old days were in the middle of August, but now with the climate change they moved to end of August and first week of September!!!!
@@lenaannis8787 thank you for your insight :)
Wonderful Crete. I was there in August. Panormos and Mediloni...lovely people, lovely food. Wish I was there no.
Now
Another great vid! Classy with a touch of Greek music. Really beautiful Greek islands, great weather and clean fresh sea breathe… what more does one need to enjoy summer?
I just left Karpathos after a two months stay
I was in Chania a couple of times in the mid seventies while serving in the army. It looks so commercialized now. It used to look more like the first town you showed. Eat some octopus for me!
Me and my friends were in crete in june and it was amazing highly recommend! The food is amazing
Can hardly wait to stay in Old Town, Chania, in September, to celebrate a milestone birthday with 25+ friends!!! Thanks for the preview :)
There were storms in different parts of Europe in the previous days. Costa Blanca in Spain experienced quite a big disaster and flooding. So I guess this weather there in Crete was part of that.
I see, that explains it. I hadn't heard about the other countries that were affected. All is calm now it seems.

Welcome to Crete again Gabe! Amazing videos of Gavdos by the way.
Thanks for the vid. Crete looks very interesting. The music was so relaxing that I have to admit I closed my eyes, listening to the music, until I remembered that I shoul be watching the video.
I hope weather gets better Gabriel so you can enjoy your time here in Greece. As always your narration and footage are excellent!
I'm in just love with all of your videos they are just so natural and literally I feel like I've experience it all
Thanks Gabriel for showing us very different nd interesting places me nd my father really enjoys a lot
There are people who would like, to experience something new an real adventure. But everything foreign, to them feels scary and just not something they are comfortable with. They expect everything to be like home, and yet different. Here I can highly recommend Disney world.
Bucket list for sure. Beautiful and enchanting
Very nice video as always! You made me checking tickets to Crete...
Great video Gabriel! Paleochora is my favorite place! Next time except of going to Balos beach, you should go to Kedrodasos, falasarna and Elafonisi beaches as well.
Also, you should explore even more the southern part of Crete which is so beautiful and serene and it has more of a hippie vibe (places like Sfakia and Loutro).
Lastly, one of my favorite things to do is go visit/stay/have dinner at one of the many old restored villages. (I've been to the first 2 and i can highly recommend them.)
- Milia: 15th century abandoned village in the mountains, renovated 20 years ago, now you can book a room, have cooking lessons, hike or eat in its wonderful tavern.
- Kapsaliana: A 18th century oil mill and settlement of Arkadi Monastery, now renovated, with wonderful restaurant/tavern.
- Aspros Potamos: Another very old settlement, which was restored
I really love your video, thanks for sharing! 😍👏
I know Crete oretty well and you certainly didnt show the best
Thanks Gabriel! Food looks scrumptious 😊 stay safe and travels ❤🙏
Gabe for me I put the Greek Islands in my top three destinations to visit or even live if money was not an issue. 😏
Myself I love Corfu... 👌Crystal clear water... beautiful wooded coves...a nice slow vibe... Tavernas... yes you know what I mean Gabe.. Paradise in Europe... without me having to fly to a Pacific island. 👌
Just the place for you m8 to relax and just take it eeeeezzzzzeeee.... 👌🍺😉😉😉😍

No Trip to the Hippy Region of Matala???.... Crete is an amazing island.. Plenty to see.. Cool Video Gabriel... Safe Travels :)
Oh man what a great video today. I really enjoy your work.Have a great week!😊😎😜😁😍👏
Was in Chania in July this year, been there many times before. A little crowded in the summer months, but a place you have to go visit if you are on the island of Crete. But my advice is to go to the outskirts of town and find the little jems.. :-)
12:47 I would definitely visit the place because of waves like this 😍
I remember that road from when I was in Crete. Again great video. Hi from Slovenia 😊
Crete is good for locals, who know where to go swim, what to eat, which villages to visit.. As a tourist you need guidance. Crete is just too big to figure out the nice places by yourself.
I don't think it's so difficult, you just need to do some research before traveling.
Everyone speaks English and it is safe...
Also, I know it's touristy, but you have to do Samaria Gorge on one of your Crete trips. At the bottom of the gorge in Agia Roumeli, take the ferry to Loutro (there isn't a road to the village). You'll only need to spend a day or two there because it's small, but the water is amazing, there's some good hiking in close proximity, and it's a good place to unplug for a while. Bring cash, because there's no ATM, though some of the restaurants have started taking cards.
Next time I'm on Crete for sure. I was planning to do it this trip but ran out of time because I had a flight already booked.
Yiouvetsi has no rice, it has pasta. Also it is made with lamb and not beef !
It is indeed very tasty, with myzithra cheese on top, (tastes like parmezano cheese)
Great tour Thanks for sharing We're heading there in October
Gabriel i am really enjoying your travels. You provide literally a bird’s eye view and it is as though we were there. Very interesting to see the every day life being reflected and no airbrushing. Congratulations!
Hi Gabriel! I loved the water coming on the stone footpath. The harbor is beautiful. I love boats and ships. Crete is a beautiful and magnificent place!
Thank you for taking us along!. Take care!😊
I totally agree with you!! So worth it!! And I can’t thank you enough for recommending it!
Cool, glad to hear it.
Hi Gabriel, thank you for your amazing footage and the effort you put into making these videos. If you go back to Greece I would recommend visiting the island of thassos along with the city of Xanthi in September at the Old Town festival!
This seems to be a very charming place, I hope I can visit sometime when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!
Wow such a nice little town in Crete!
Are you going to Agios Nikalous ? I absolutely loved that city and its landscape
Hi,
In autumn and winter there are always high waves, sometimes even storm 10 Beaufort.
And the harbour area of Chania is every fall/winter over flown with sea water, at least a few days due to the strong winds.
So, we are used to it !
In the winter there are loads of snow in the mountains, people are unable to leave their houses.
This too is Crete 😏
Thank you for sharing your video !
In the many years that I live here, I did not manage to see everything !!
Warmest wishes from Chania ☀😎
Hi Marianne,

Watching this again. Crete, one of the most underrated islands in the world! But I am totally OK with it lesser known. Old Town Chania, my most favorite destination after 30+ countries- the food, people, sailing, sights, clear and all sorts of blue hues waters, and the beaches!!!
