Yeah if your licence isn't in the Roman alphabet then it would need to be translated. But depending on how much it costs in India, I would recommend getting an international license anyway - it might just make things easier rather than having to get things officially translated/authenticated etc.

We think renting a car is better. Taxis are ok but you end up spending more with less flexibility and we don't rate public transport very high.

Yes you can, you'd need to get on one of the roll-on-roll-off ferries but it can be expensive!
