Y’know, it’s kinda funny how Emile has actually seen more of this game than he thinks. (He played the first three levels of the 3DS exclusive Cloud World on Masae’s channel for reference.)
Ok, the ruins are probably my favorite world aesthetically. The flowing water, the winding aqueducts, the waterwheels, the creeping vines, the intricate carving. All of it is so mysterious and pretty.
The ruins aesthetic works really well with the art style
Maybe it's the Tomb Raider fanboy in me, but I _love_ ruins settings with plenty of water. It looks great and makes a lot of sense - in olden days we simply couldn't settle far from water.
1:08 I was totally expecting Jon to go: "Meow" (Or the Nya sound he used to do when Emile yells)
1:08 The triumphant return of Catgirl Emile
I think the first level is really neat in how it transitions from World 2’s environment to World 3’s. Gives DKCR a sense of continuity that isn’t really present in a lot of things Donkey Kong, even in this game, though having a sense of continuity in something like Tropical Freeze would be really difficult (save for the sixth world but that’s just because of how it’s themed).
It’s actually in every world too.
@@Driggsdamonstah Mmm, I don’t remember there being much World 6 elements in World 7’s first stage. I was going to say that it’s the case in every world, but it feels like as the game goes on, that sense of continuity kinda goes away, and then the final level of the game, drug trip that it is, has nothing from the final world.
@@Rexaura888 actually yeah. They don’t transition well into World 7 or World 6 but aside from that my point still stands. (Obviously they don’t transition from 8 to 9 but it’s also the secret final level.)
@@Driggsdamonstah i think world 6 best transition is seeing the forest below if that even counts and i think you see some more forest like things at the very beginning and world 7 features a more cliff look at the beginning they are probably the 2 least obvious though?
@@specialelfilin hmmm… I’ll have to look into that.
This series is simultaneously hilarious and painful to watch.
As someone who has played and beaten Returns (on the 3DS, admittedly, although I got to the final boss on the Wii version), you summed up my feelings quite well.
Agreed, and this is coming from someone who 100% this game.
I loved the time attacks in this game and I got all gold rank (couldn’t get all shiny gold, some of them are too difficult)
So every time I expected them to roll and jump over gaps but they never do it lol
Always getting bananas from the DK barrel has become the running gag of the playthrough.
I remember spending so much time struggling to get that K on the first level, like I saw the Stilts enemy and was OH GOD THIS ONE cause I still remember that screen.
I hope these videos never end tbh
Do you mean the DKCR videos or TRG in general? Because they did eventually beat the game...
@@kevinr.9733 Both, tbh I just love videos where people play games years back
Button Bash is probably my favorite level in the entire game!
DONT FORGET RARE MADE GOLDEN EYE 🤣
I came back to Xenoblade 3 after a few months when the Wave 2 DLC dropped, and of course my first post-battle line was "I'm the girl with the gall".
Cranky's Advice: You heard of a "Golden Banana"? Supposedly, it takes you to another world. Some folk say that it's a acid trip, but since we're in a game with LITERAL HYPNOTIC TIKIS, I think we can suspend our disbelief...
Love the ruins world, this is the last world I could as a kid cause the next one world…. Yeah I needed the AI to do it, glad I came back to the game to beat it, now I find it easy even tho I haven’t replayed the game a lot… weird. references of the old arcade in the ruins is amazing. ❤
0:42 never I would imagine a bird on Stilts.
4:26 funny considering Rare made Goldeneye.
I love 8-bit DK with the Wii remote in the background there.
Just realized the Humming Birds in Button Bash are homing... birds...
I needed something to make my mood better.
Something that’s always bugged me is how the Blue fire tiki that shoots fireballs gets introduced first before the red fire tiki that just moves.
I know the feeling , the red flame before blue flame is like a golden rule of fire in video game or something like that.
Button Bash is one of my favorite levels.
9:03 add that to a Chugga-screech compilation 😆
Jon is like "noooo we missed the last puzzle piece!
Chugga is like "oh. Well anyway..."
I haven’t played Donkey Kong in years. Enjoying the episodes boys. 🙂👍
11:15 That Billy Mitchell reference on the stage sure aged poorly 😂
huh, that's a billy mitchell reference?
@@defnotjam The figure is wearing a tie with Stars and Stripes (American Flag). Billy Mitchell is known for always wearing an American Flag tie.
It's funny how the movie King of Kong aged BETTER for the same reasons. At the time, people mocked it for portraying Billy as a cartoonish bad guy. Then it turned out his cheating was even worse than the movie thought.
How did it age poorly if this came out after King of Kong?
@@colossaldonut5190 because we now know that Mitchell is a total cheater and fraud.
those metal guys can be very fickle, pounding the ground will flip them though.
9:01 Hahaha... I thought for sure that would be instant death.
18:58 I work at Cracker Barrel, so I say the word "barrel" in a non-DK context all the time.
19:06 If you play any Source Engine games, you could refer to barrels semi-often. Things like physics puzzles, or becoming a barrel in Garry's Mod Prop Hunt. Also gun barrels are a thing, that could be referred to in other contexts.
Feeling the required path is a secret and the secret path is the required path is how I feel a lot when playing Super princess peach. It like the game but it's really unclear which areas are bonus some time lol
I have vague memories of these two stages... I definitely remember the end of 3-2, and dealing with the saws and falling platforms in 3-1. Glad to see everybody still enjoying the game, despite some weird oddities like not being able to fire certain cannons you should be able to fire individually without both Kongs, and the always-present problem in video games of which way is the bonus.
Man I am loving this play through. Getting to experience Emile’s and Tim’s genuine reactions and surprise to things is so fun!
Well, an unexpected consequence of me missing that a video was uploaded yesterday is that I got to watch two of these back-to-back. I'll take it.
Missed puzzle pieces 16: (3 new)
3-1 Right at the start of the level; head to the left and roll jump to reach a platform with the puzzle piece.
3-1 Right at the end of the level; head to the right and roll jump to reach a platform with a vine switch for the puzzle piece.
3-2 To the left of the timed platforms; there are a couple of ways to get up there, so just watch the platforms carefully and find a path that works for you.
i’m really thankful for videos like these that help distract me from being severely depressed every single day.
20:38
Jon: "That's the one thing I kinda hate about Returns games."
Me: "Yeah, the all points of no *Return*." :D
Rewatching this series makes me wonder just how 7 yr old me managed to beat this game. Only the third world and adult me is sweating buckets at just the thought of replaying it
The Atelier games are pretty cute. It's been a while since I played one, but the protagonists like to shout "Barrel!" when you look at one.
It's good to see Emile's loving Xenoblade 3 just as much as the rest of us!
I think he’s said on Twitter that XC3 > XC1 when he got to the credits
@@regulusking4299 Really? Then i agree, 3 is the goat!
@@lucasdellamaggiore same, and I can’t wait for the dlc story
@@regulusking4299 Me neither!
Perhaps the Kongs should get revenge on the Tikis by making some *Tiki* masala!
19:53
Me: "It looks like the vanishing blocks from Megaman."
19:55
Emile: "It's sort of like Megaman blocks."
Me: "LOL, it happened again!"
14:00 To answer that question from my perspective, it felt more like a repeat, and it's where the series started to get obnoxious with collectibles, before reaching a peak in DK64.
Yeah: To fully complete the game you have to beat Khaos, then unlock the secret world. Then beat the secret world's five levels which can only be accessed through golden coins obtained by beating the bonus stages. Then you have to beat the secret boss. Then you need to get all the DK coins in each stage. And then you have to obtain all the banana birds, some of which you get by doing things for the Brother Bears and the others you unlock through a Simon minigame that just gets harder and harder.
4:32 he is lucky as shit, he was playing like ASS
I have only one complaint about DKC3 myself, and it's the elephant. It's never a good time when you get turned into the elephant.
And we're finally in the ruins world one of my favorite areas compared to what's next.
1:08 Was that Emile trying to be a cat girl or an strangled cat.
1:41 Ah yes throwing a barrel in Paper Mario how i could actually forget about it 🤣
1:50 I loved that announcement although i'm totally in the opposite side with Paper Mario although i can envision me with a Pokémon substitute because...man with Modern Pokémon i'm in the same mindset as Emile with modern Paper Mario.
4:26 And that's the big head mode in Goldeneye classic Rare.
4:28 That was... STUPIDLY CLOSE.
8:06 after so many deaths finally past that part i'm not the biggest fan of the whole playing in the background although it's a neat concept (i died a lot though).
10:50 🤣🤣🤣 Wasn't expecting that to happen although i always moved out of the way.
13:06 I really like these sections.
14:03 DKC 3 is...just plain odd some of the levels are annoying and gimmicky BUT THE BANANA BIRDS CAN BURN IN HELL although it has great ideas.
19:29 man i struggled in this part my first time through so many falls it's good that you don't die.
20:14 Although Yoku Blocks are a nuisance they are a staple of the franchise at this point.
And after blasting through the stone baboons mouths we're done.
Next time more ruins!
-Sounded like a strangled cat girl to me.-
Honestly, I'm fine with the modern forms of both Paper Mario and Pokemon, despite being a longtime fan of both. The way I see it, there's still quite a bit of good in them, regardless of what their haters say. Of course, not many of the haters of modern Paper Mario want to actually listen to why I like the newer games, and they _especially_ don't want to hear my criticisms of their own criticisms. Hence part of why I'm skipping _both_ of Emile's current PM series. With that said, I haven't gotten to play Legend Arceus yet, let alone ScaVio. Also, reset the clock.
If you’re looking for some good Pokēmon substitutes, I’d recommend the Yo-Kai Watch series. All the games are 3DS exclusive, and a little hard to find, but if you can find one, it’s a lot of fun, I’d even say better than the modern Pokēmon games.
@@SuperGoker64 Ever heard of the phrase pot calling the kettle?
@@Pikachu2Ash Huh. And here I thought you blocked me.
If you guys have the right to complain about PM because you're old fans, then guess what- I'm an old fan of both PM _and_ Chugga. How is it that your strawmen of "literally all Toads" and "literally all paper jokes" are valid just because you're old fans, yet my points get ignored _in spite_ of being an old fan?
Oh, and btw, I have talked to quite a few of you over the years, and I have been nice and respectful about it. You know where that got me? That got me someone chiming in on a two-years-dead conversation, going on about how a bad person I supposedly am because he misread me saying that I find the PM series as a whole to be funny, to somehow mean that I find literally every single moment in the series funny, _up to and including Bobbery's backstory._ And that's just my favorite story. Trust me, I've gotten far worse than what I'm dishing out.
It's funny how you say that fans of modern PM think that it's not okay to hate SS, when my actual problem is that A) many of your reasons are strawmen, hypocritical, or BOTH, and B) you guys are still nasty to me even when I'm being respectful. The fact that you fail to understand this, coupled with how those that agree with Emile but still get sick of him complaining all the time _don't_ get pushback, shows me that you find it not okay to _like_ SS. You seriously sound like you're saying "please respect my opinion while I refuse to respect yours". So I throw your own reply back at you.
And yes, Emile has unironically done wrong in all of this. That's about the only thing in a certain tweet cluster of yours that's actually accurate. He's spread the above strawmen more times than I can count when he knows better than to spread misinformation on games. He only picked up TOK in the first place because people were rightfully calling him out for pulling a Francis. He practically got an org@sm when Jon read reviews that agree with his hatred. In the middle of recording ALttP, no less. He promised _multiple times_ before the PM64 LP remake that he would at least tone it down, yet he never seems to.
But hey, it's not like I expect you to actually address any of these points with anything other than more strawmen, projection and malding. Like you do with everyone you disagree with. Makes me wonder how you'll butcher my name _this_ time.
>Wonky
Didn't think we'd get a collab with Erobb221 but here we are
These are always great to watch.
4:30 my name is kong ... diddy kong
I'm not sure if this comment will get read or not but I wish to give some support to one of if not my favorite youtuber group. The barrel at the end of the levels only give balloons if the DK passes 15 or more times it is not luck based. I learned this myself the same goes for Coins and Banannas ita determined by number of spins oddly enough.
I could be wrong since I'm not finding any information about it on the web but I'm pretty sure that's how I always had a lot of lives in the game. It's either 15 or 22 I can give a solid answer if I go play it again.
To answer Emile's question for something Jon didn't say which is also extra weird to call it uninspired. DKC3 goes for a lotta one time level gimmicks making it the king of variety of the trilogy. Some things are revisted obviously but it shows that they really wanted to push ideas with how many levels have gimmicks. If you ask people to pick out a memorable level from DKC3 you'll probably get a large variety of answers. Tim would probably answer the lightning strike level. My answer is Squitter in the factory level you're being shot at. Also Wise not being on SNES DKC3 is a lil sad but Eveline's score outside of her version of Stilt Village are also bangers. Nuts and Bolts one of the songs vastly superior to Wise's GBA song imo.
0:25 Oh look it the shout from the 3DS trailer, I really like the camera work that when into this shot because it make the world of this game feel a little less 2d.
0:42 I can imagine in universe the banter that goes on between DK and Diddy everytime one of them comes back to life with the barrel.
DK Yay I beat the level!
Diddy: thank to my sacrifice to that bird on stilks!
DK: You should be grateful I bring you back with a barrel everytime I get a chance, it's not my fault that opportunity come up.
Diddy: we wouldn't be needing it so much if you wouldn't keep running ahead much!!!
DK: Oh ya like your one to talk! Keep blaming me for everything even though half your deaths were from you falling easy jumps.
1:36 And then there's Donkey...... HE DEAD!
10:01 Super cool!
12:31 Cause that makes total sense :D
14:23 Ya cause he's a baby and babies can often be annoying when they cry
20:24 Come on why was it the one time I would like to hear where that conversation went Emile is ignored :(
The transition this time is starting outside at the beach before entering the ruins
3-1 is a fun stage...it's a good starting stage for my possibly least favorite world
3-2 is my favorite stage of this world easily...too bad it introduces an specific enemy...it might not seem so bad but people who've played this whole game probably know they can be way worse
Well this world seems good so far...but uh it might still be my least favorite world
I like Donkey Kong Country 3 fine. I mean it may not be as strong as DKC 1 and DKC 2 but I still enjoyed my time with it regardless.
I never really played the DKC games all the way through, but I never knew the consensus on 3 compared to the first two.
In response to what Emile was saying Xenoblade 3 - one of the (very) few problems with that game is that they did not record enough dialog between party members in battle and post battle. Hence your kind of stuck hearing the same 10 or so lines over and over again. The game itself is amazing, it just as a minor problem in that regard.
At least they end up being memorable. Slight problem but nothing game breaking
The actual problem is how much it keeps using the 2 or 3 dialogues, that most people also heard. Which was "Hear that Noah? Lanz wants something a bit meatier" and "I'm the girl with the gal." Throughout until the patch with the DLC with Ino came out. And that was a good 2-3 months of mostly hearing that. So much so, that the Japanese made a meme song about Eunie with her "meatier" dialogue.
Only after that patch came out, we end up having the other end battle dialogues heard just as much. Thus truly finding out the problem you speak of.
Also reminder that their falling death screams when falling too far or into the void, were overwritten by their dying in battle dialogue. Until either the Ino DLC or later patch fixed it.
@@byronlyons3548 I guess that is I get when I play a new video game on release. I did not realize that was the case; I have not played XC3 since before Ino came out so I would have no way of knowing otherwise. I was going to play the DLC quests at some point before the final original story scenario comes out, however because of this I might actually play again earlier (provided when I have the time that is, I have been exponentially busy with work as of late).
1:08 Nekoconroy has returned
The never ending game that will always be hell and pain 😮😮😮😮
It was mostly in the jungle of world 1 but now we've got another foresty level, does anyone else hear the sharp beeping or ringing sound in the background of the music? I think it's from the game audio, like a fire alarm is going off in the background.
18:25
Jon: "Why did you land over there?"
Me: "He probably DI'd."
18:33
Emile: "I think he can directional influence it..."
Me: XD
4:27 That was a close one.
6:03 That is mean it looks like a bottomless pit till you jump in to get it.
6:44 My eye, I'm not supposed to get sun guys in it.
16:01 Yeah, his name is Professor Chops.
21:48 that was not the last puzzle piece!! The last one is at the VERY BEGINNING of the stage. Its kind of dickish placement. You’re ment to find it using the barrel
6:03 It's like the Ferris Wheel scene from Another.
Funny how this feels more like Diddy Kong County than Donkey.
Personally, DKC3 is my favourite of the trilogy. It takes the new features of DKC2 and refines them, it removes Rattly (the worst animal buddy in the series) and the ability to fall from the top of the vertical stages all the way to the bottom (except in the waterfall stages, but it's pretty easy to avoid doing unlike in 2), and it has a lot of really interesting levels and enemies. I can see Jon's complaint about the banana birds and bears, but it does take place away from DK Island and does in fact have all the friendly kongs from 2. The more open and explorable map is also really interesting to me. I personally think that the boss fights are more interesting in 3, but I think fans of both 2 and 3 can agree that both games have better bosses than 1.
The complaints about DK and Diddy not being playable (and instead needing rescued) as well as Kiddy Kong being ugly or annoying never really bothered me. I've also heard from DKC2 fans that the levels are "too gimmicky" but I'd like to remind them that DKC2's levels are very much full of gimmicks too, from jumping on seals to make ice to being chased up through a tower filling with poison to a race with an angry bird, and I don't think that necessarily a bad thing (except for Toxic Tower in 2, I hate that stage). We've had a lot of levels of pure platforming in all 3 games, so having more gimmicks as the series go on is pretty common in platformers (look at Crash and Spyro too, whose third games are often praised a lot).
Then there's the hidden final world, which is a nuisance in 2 because you have to go back through each individual world to get each level, but in 3 it had a dedicated world. The secret final boss in the hidden final world is also much better in 3, being a brand new fight instead of a 1 minute long dodging session which is just a rehash of the final boss of the main game.
All in all, I feel like DKC2 tries to make a lot of changes to the first game and didn't really get them right first time, then DKC3 came along and made them much better, especially by having the large character/small character dynamic back in place of 2's double small characters.
I really think for this game the dk reward is based on the number of rotations so if you get it in the first 2 lives 3-4 coins and 5 or more is bananas
"What's so bad about Donkey Kong Country 3 anyway?" Not too much really, in my opinion. I think it's a pretty good game; I like most of the levels aside from the Lost World ones, and I really enjoy the Northern Wilderness theming. Fully completing it is a bit of a pain in some regard, but the first DKC wasn't that fun to fully complete either. I personally enjoy DKC 3 more than DKC 1 to be honest.
iirc if you hit the DK symbol the 7th time it appears, THEN it gives you 1-UPs
I actually liked the music for DKC 3 personally, a lot better than a chunk of the GBA version's OST anyway. I do agree that some of the boss fights were cool, especially the K3 one.
6:18 "Oh, this is like the stage from Super Smash Brothers. Oh! Frick it."
No, Frigate is actually from Goldeneye.
But Frigate Orpheon is a Smash Bros stage
@@iantaakalla8180 Oh dang, you got me there!
And then there’s chunky! He’s dead…………… (record scratch) DK! Chunky’s dead!
Kinda funny how DKC3 has pretty meh music, and then when the GBA music released with actually great music by David Wise, people complained that it didn't keep the mood from the original. For the record, I think David Wise's soundtrack fits so much better, yes, even the tree theme.
Do you think the more upbeat tree theme fits the level where you're chased by a giant saw of death more than the original? Seems like mood dissonance to me.

OMG IVE NEVER SEEN THE DK HOLDING THE WII MOTE IN THE BACKGROUD AT 9:30
im sorry all that i took away from this is i cant wait for emile to talk about XC3 in a video.
The GBA version of 3 has David Wise
I have to disagree with Jon on DKC3. If anything, I feel that game had the most inspired levels in the series (though I could see an argument on DKC2, but definitely not on DKC). They're all completely unique. The music, even if it's lesser than the one in DKC 1 and 2, is still absolutely great. It's mostly underrated, I feel, because it came out after the N64 was already out...
Midge
Regarding the music, I think Eveline Novakovic (née Fischer) did a great job. Sure, the level themes don't all live up to Aquatic Ambiance and Stickerbush Symphony, but they're all very good nevertheless and fit the levels they play in quite well. The only level theme I even remotely dislike is Stilt Village, especially compared to its GBA counterpart.
Too bad that's the theme for the very first level and thus the one that sticks in everyone's minds...
I should play the OG trilogy at some point. I have Nintendo Online lol
I have the first one on Wii-U but now I'm pretty much forced to play it on Switch Online because I often make use of restore points and buying the original versions on SNES cost a lot more.
looking back this lets play has shown me that one other thing they brought back from the original DCK is the fact that Diddy is a better character than DK his hover alone makes platforming a hell of a lot easier than with DK its no wonder why people would pick two player mode and kill off DK just so they can play as Diddy
Your friendly reminder that the GBA version of DKC3 has a completely different soundtrack done entirely by David Wise (and I lowkey find a lot better)
10:39, Instant Death Surprise
Not as interesting as dull surprise but I'll take it.
I forgot how goofy looking the stilts ostrich was. How is that thing not a meme?
Hoo Rah!
0.7 SECOND HERO! 🍌
Donkey Kong Country without David Wise is *_sacrilege._*
I do not think the barrel gives multiple balloons, I think it is only coins or bananas
They do it's rare though (and i got it once on the 3DS version)
