Such a fantastic record, blends so many genres together so wonderfully.
They also just got back together last year after almost 7 years I think, so maybe we'll get some new music from them.

One of my favorite albums. My favorite by them is Ashes Against the Grain, which I think is a little bit more digestible piece by piece, but this album absolutely creates a certain melancholic atmosphere which is what this band is all about.

Odal is maybe the most beautiful instrumental song ever written.

I have heard thousands of albums, but this is the very best. Regardless of genre.
It seamlessly blends multiple disparate genres - post-rock, folk, black metal, doom metal and even film score (just pay attention and you will hear Morricone). It isn't flashy or super technical or anything like that. But it is teeming with atmosphere and emotions, carefuly composed and with impeccable flow, topped by perfectly fitting production. A true work of art.

I listened to Ashes Against the Grain after you featured an Agalloch song on one of the theme weeks and loved it. Thanks! Looking forward to this.

Cool choice! This album is one of the few where I can tolerate the growls because they're more in the background and musically this is just so interesting.
By the way, two of their members have interesting podcasts. Bassist Jason Walton's is called I hate Music, the one that new/last drummer Hunter Ginn has with writer Jeff Wagner is called Radical Research. Both explore music beyond the beaten paths. Mostly in the Metal realm but also other genres.

Thanks for this one Jim, It’s been a while since I’ve heard this album, from what I remember it is a rather majestic wall of noise.
Edit : after just listening to it, it is less of a wall of sound than I remembered. A perfect album cover .

Such a moodpiece if I ever heard one. Great stuff. I hear some Alcest in spots, maybe they were influenced by this.

I love this album and have listened to it countless times. It always conjures images of wandering through a snowy, frozen forest, for me.
One of my favorite lines in music:
Here at the edge of this world
Here I gaze at a pantheon of oak, a citadel of stone
If this grand panorama before me is what you call God
    Then God is not dead

Not bad - probably as mellow as black metal gets (though I have heard some of Burzum's later stuff) and it's nice to hear growly vocals amongst some gentler instrumentation. There's hints of post-rock and prog without landing squarely in those genres. Nothing too unusual if you take each element on its own terms but this mainly succeeds due to the juxtaposition of those different elements. I'll watch part 2.

While I tend to prefer the groovier, more upbeat sounds of Ashes Against the Grain, this album has some of my favourite lyrics of all time. Particularly in The Shadow of our Pale Companion.
Here at the edge of this world
Here I gaze at a pantheon of oak, a citadel of stone
If this grand panorama before me is what you call God. . .
    Then God is not dead
And I say that as a complete anti-theist, that perspective on the beauty and power of nature being godlike unto itself is immensely moving.

Can you do these shows as podcasts?

    • @JimNewstead
      @JimNewstead  4 месяца назад

Hmmm, not sure. There is a big problem with copyright. Is it these specific videos or all of them you are referring to? I'll have an investigation because I think the more platforms the content is on, the bigger the audience!

When I’m on the road, I listen to your channel with my phone in a pocket. RUclips, I think, will just stream the audio and not the video in that mode. But, it’s nice to listen to your show like a podcast.

    Good evening Jim,
I can’t remember I heard this band earlier on your channel and that usually isn’t a good sign. It can also be alzheimer light as we say in the Netherlands. Oh well, we’ll see what’s coming.
    Nice first song.
Second song. Nice start. And then comes the bloody growling again. Such nice music spoiled by these noises. And he can sing I hear 😡.
Enough other music to choose from.

I find these guys really grey and bland, just keeping in that area of sound with small variations at added arrangements. Not bad but more as ambient music
