  • Its a bitter cold day in 1978, and we are trackside with a old Kodak Super 8mm sound movie camera. We are just north of the Bear Mountain bridge on the east shore of the Hudson River on the old NYC Water Level Route in New York. The first train has FL9's north bound in push pull fashion. He is seen blowing the Handcock Air whistle as he passes. Then n/b Amtrak #63, the Niagara Rainbow passes with fantastic echoing horns in the river valley. Then a s/b Amtrak turbo blast past with even better sounding horns. Sorry for the quality, and shaky old film. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294™...

After all, the K5LA horn was specifically designed for Amtrak, that is until the freight railroads like CSX and Norfolk Southern decided to purchase them.

How unusual in that the Turboliner has a Nathan P-01235 horn, which were customized by Nathan for Amtrak's E60 electric locomotives. Pretty unique and cool sound.

Fun fact, The New Haven's First batch of EMD FL9's didn't have horns but instead had really cool Hancock Air whistles the second batch however did have horns like most normal diesels. The EMD FL9 is one of the oldest duel mode diesel locomotives to exust and lasted in service for nearly 60 years until being retired by Metro North in 2008
