You can see the inside of the engine glowing, but the exhaust is basically invisible (its water vapour, after all), especially compared to the very bright SRBs and the tons of glowing dirt they produce. You should watch a Space Shuttle launch, you will see the main engines ignite first, followed after a few seconds by the SRBs.
The V1 wasn't ineffective because of it's propulsion system. It's guidance system was essentially a compass and a clock, travelling in sort of the direction of the target at about as long as it would take to get there. Unsurprisingly, a large percentage of them didn't hit anything of great value, but their randomness was in itself terrifying.

Near the end of the war the Nazis developed a V3 weapon that would be shot out of huge traditional underground cannons permenantly aimed at London but they were defeated before they could be used.

You should watch a Space Shuttle launch, you will see the main engines ignite first, followed after a few seconds by the SRBs.
The V1 wasn't ineffective because of it's propulsion system. It's guidance system was essentially a compass and a clock, travelling in sort of the direction of the target at about as long as it would take to get there. Unsurprisingly, a large percentage of them didn't hit anything of great value, but their randomness was in itself terrifying.
