    Just saying, Dear, if you ever have something like that again, that your hands react to something, take off your ring as soon as possible. If your fingers swell, you may have a problem there. You did an amazing job! 🤗

      A good point! Luckily I didn’t have any swelling just slight rash. But if I have any swelling in the future, I’ll try to remember to remove my rings. Luckily they are not tight.

    Oh gosh! I'm glad your hands recovered quickly! The parasol is beautiful, and you did a great job restoring it.
    I imagine the original would have been sewn on starting with the lining, and then attaching the cover from the center and outwards, leaving the edge for last.
    My parasol is a modern one that I got from a goth store in my youth, so it's plaid with black lace. Nowhere near as fancy, but functional. 😅

      Thanks! I think that the ivory bits also might have something to do with the construction. One could sew them on the cover and then the cover could be just slipped on and off. I couldn’t do this because about third of them were broken.

    Very nice work what you did with the parasol! Very nice find! I always worry about arsenicum or other poisenuff stuff if I use my antique books. I know now never to use my antique cookbooks in the kitchen.

    and nice hostas too ! One day I may repair the stripy black brolly with a silver handle I bought in a charity shop in Bath in 1970 but it has a broken strut and I hesitate to take it to a doctor so it's easily postponed

    I've been using just a boring old umbrella for shade when the sun gets too much. Your parasol looks so lovely :)

    I have seen this type of seam called a parasol/umbrella seam haha. I’ve personally never seen it on anything other than an umbrella, and I used it on my parasol I made a few weeks ago!! (skipped the first stitch line though)

    This is exciting! Too bad the original trim was dangerous

      Thanks! It was also very cheap. Usually even broken parasol frames can cost over 100 €. This was about 50-60 € including the postage!

    Thank you for this! I bought a “project parasol” off eBay years ago and wanted to restore it but had no idea where to start. Now where did I put that box….

      FWIW: Nicole Rudolph did a video on this subject a few years ago. Having 2 for technique sources might fill the info out a bit

    Why would the ph of the trim be anything but neutral? Is it the dye?

    • @withmyhandsdream
      @withmyhandsdream  2 месяца назад +2

      It could be dye, old detergent or something like moth repellant. Or just plain dirt. I learned that the professional conservators always test the pH, so I though I could start doing it as well.
