I have had none of the issues he has on my nexus 6 ive been using for around 2 months now, not once have I had a wifi issue, and I connect to Wifi all the time so... idk what that is about I really don't know why he was so negative about this phone, it is the best phone (in my opinion) I have used in a long time, and I have used a LOT of phones so i really don't understand where all the negativity comes from I still enjoy your show Linus, no respect lost or anything, but I really don't think the issues you mentioned were large enough for the tirade and shit review you gave the phone overall but that is just my opinion
***** No I am pointing out issues I legitimately didn't have. he is right the camera sucks but I don't use it so i dont care, I really don't mind the keyboard, with its size I have no issues using it, the wifi issue I HAVE NEVER HAD, was my point nor any other software glitches, I am not saying he didnt have them and that he is wrong in this review at all, I am pointing out that not every single person in the world has this issue, and that I love the phone I am allowed to disagree with him maybe someone should learn not to jump to conclusions
Fanboys in one sentence: omg Linus y dont u just browse through the millions of 3rd party apps to find one you like and is not buggy as hell, only takes a year or two!
Linus, I think your reviews and opinion pieces are some of the best in the industry. Your the most neutral unbiased reviewer I've ever had the pleasure or viewing. Thank you :)
I'm glad Linus honestly reviews tech from his sponsors. Every other RUclipsr would easily just throw out the cons just to keep the new tech from their sources coming. Thanks for the reviews Linus.
Dear Linus, thank you for giving us reviews with your honest opinion on the products you review. Honest reviews are much appreciated. Especially when they're brutally honest. Sometimes reviewers seem a little biased, or reluctant to point out the flaws in a product. They only focus on the features available, and not how those features are to use. 2 years back I built myself a new PC, and I did my homework. I wantched and read dozens and dozens of reviews on the various parts. On the particular case I settled on I must have watched 4 or 5 different video reviews and read 2 more on respectable hardware reviewing sites. None of those reviews mentioned that the right side panel can NOT even be fitted if you use normal Sata and Sata-power cables. No, for my case, you need to buy right-angled Sata cables, and those right angled Sata power cables that Silverstone makes. If you use normal standard cables, as you normally would, you can never close the case. None of those reviews ever mentioned that the hard drive trays are loose and vibrate in the case. And when you fit 2 or more hard drives that turn on the same speed (5400rpm, etc) the vibrations start to amplify eachother and generate a very annoying pulsating noise. This was a silent case that scored superbly in noise reduction according to several reviewers ... I guess they didn't bother to actually put a build in there, or simply didn't bother to mention the faults. Anyway, that is why I appreciate it when a reviewer is honest about a product, and tells us what is good, and what isn't good about it. By the way, I detest smartphones. And touchscreens too. That is (still) the most annoying HID. If it doesn't have proper keys, then I don't want it. (yes, I do own a smartphone, what else is there? And it isn't my first one either). I've got 3 computers at work, and another one at home. I've got internet acces all day, every day. Proper internet. No shady intermittant wifi or 3G. I don't even want to be online with my phone. 3G or 4G? I switch it off. What do they expect of me? That I surf the web while I'm driving to work? Do I need to check me email while I'm out for groceries? That's not what a phone is for. At least not for me. It's for phonecalls and texts. Satnav is usefull. A camera can be usefull too. And I do appreciate a good MP3 player. But all of the other features are just annoying overhead and fluff that is in the way of a phone actualy being a good and usefull piece of equipment. Don't get me started on tablets. I have no use for them, none what so ever. Internet on the couch? Looking at a filthy greasy unresponsive touchscreen with fingerprints, grime and whatever all over it ... But why? My PC is just 10ft away. I need internet on the couch as much as I need it on a phone. Boo tablets! Boo smartphones! Boo! My apologies for turning this into a rant, but the whole concept of a 'smartphone' is just so stupid. Please give me a 'dumbphone', those are much better phones. Im calling it! You're reading it here! The Sony Ericsson W550i (2005), BEST PHONE EVER. The last of the proper phones. Just before all of the smartphone touchscreens nonsense took off. Excellent keypad, superb MP3 player, excellent UI, superb built in stereo speakers, even better optional external speakers, very very very good FM receiver with outstanding reception and very quick channel search, very usefull flashlight, programmeable shortcut keys into your adress book or whatever you'd like to use them for. Never been bested spring loaded slide lock/unlock key on the side. 2 full weeks of battery juice with normal use. Today it's 24 hours if you're lucky. 8 hours battery life whilst playing music at full volume through the speakers (great for working in the shed). Much longer if you use headphones (train or any other public place). Bluetooth that actually worked, including file transfer! File transfer over bluetooth! Thake that Android! Slow as heck, but at least it was possible. You could actually share your MP3s among friends ... o wait ... I think that's frowned upon these days ... I never shared nothing with no one! The W550i did have EDGE and a built in browser. But guess what, internet on your phone was silly even back in '05, so I switched that off too. The camera was pretty bad. Not a good camera. I want THAT phone again, with maybe a few updates. Aside from Satnav and a microSD flash card, I don't want any new features. Ok, perhaps a notepad-like text editor so I can make notes and store usefull stuff like my SSN or a grocery list. Does that Nexus 6 even fit in your pocket? Nexus 6, Iphone 6, Galaxy Note, cargo pants or bust.
in the present i have a Motorola Nexus 6, and let me tell you, with the Android N 7.1.1 update, the only thing that misses on the phone, is the fingerprint reader. 100% satisfied.
Maybe your sponsor will not like this one but wouldn't the cover on it potentially hurt wifi connectivity? Did you test it without it? It still means the device is flawed if it takes that little to screw up wifi but still something to consider
I highly doubt google/motorola is that stupid to design a phone with such a design flaw that the wifi radio can be cut short by a piece of flimsy plastic. Most people do put cases on their phones.
Yeah just like Apple wouldn't design a phone to be used with your hand with your hand killing the radio signal unless you hold it unnaturally....wait...
dimitriid I forgot about that fail. That was a pretty hilarious screw up. I also like how Apple tried to justify the design by blaming us for holding it wrong.
I've been using the 32GB Nexus 6 for almost a month, I bought it for christmas and I just don't get/don't have most of the problems which Linus had in the video. I don't get your problem with the lock button and volume rocker. I can even use them when the phone is in my pocket. Yes the camera is a bit frustrating but only because the interface I don't like the fact that it remembers your last chosen option but apart from that when you've been using an older and cheaper phone like I did and buy yourself this, you'll be satisfied with the camera itself. It is not slow -at least- for me although I'm a heavy user (background apps) and it makes perfect pictures overall in my opinion. I did not have any difficulties with the wifi although we have the worst wifi in the whole wide world, so maybe its just your review unit. Keyboard. I think that this is the best android keyboard yet. I can type way faster than on my old phone or on my BlackBerry (and BB has really good native keyboard). Multitask button. Really Linus? If I know it correctly the order of these 3 buttons have not changed in ages. I haven't had a phone in my life with the on-screen buttons (I had a 1st gen Samsung Galaxy Ace and a BlackBerry Z10) but I know what they do and I got used to it really quickly. Also you don't buy a phone like this to your mother. My only problem with the phone is that when I'm using it one-handed I can hardly reach the multitask button. That's all... yet. In my opinion whoever switches from a lower category phone to this will be really satisfied, and I think generally the phone is better than you've presented it in this video. And I know your style, I've been watching your videos and been on the forum for a really long time. (Sorry for accidental spelling errors)
Just picked up my Nexus 6 and I love it. I have had no issues with the phone at all. Besides the camera... It is bad. But I'm not much of a shutter bug anyways so it doesn't bother me much. As for the WiFi issues I have had no such issues bat all. And no software issues to speak of (running 5.1). Its the best media consumption phone I have ever used. And my typing experience has been mostly positive. Also the build of the phone feels really sturdy.
Loving your sincere review, Linus. And by the way, why buy a 600 USD phone with a 6+ inch display if you can't even multitask? So much space wasted. At least you can multitask in a Note 4. Vanilla Android Experience is becoming lame.
It's called an App, download it. There are quite a few free high rated multi tasking apps on the play store. Remember this is stock Android, the key word being 'stock'...so build it. If you're not going to build it then enjoy what ever phone you prefer but try not misleading other viewers because you feel Vanilla Android is becoming lame. Vanilla by definition means - when not customized from its original form. Realize the Note 4, HTC, Sony, etc. has been customized on top of Vanilla Android but you could easily do the same with the Nexus. If you don't want to customize and want to rely on this to be done for you by the Manufacture then Nexus is not for you but if you enjoy tinkering or rooting or creating your phone in the way you want then Nexus is the way to go but again it's left to you to add what ever multi tasking apps, boot loaders, launchers, etc. that you want. It's stock (Vanilla)...so build it!
Seth Parr You sir deserve more upvotes. I'm liking you more and more after every comment you make. Android was created for customization, it embodies the "hacker spirit". Nothing excites me more than forming and building my own experience, figuring out and controlling the OS. Android is literally and figuratively the mobile Linux, which is in my opinion the most fun OS in modern circulation(but not the most productive...). Those people who view this as 'boring' or 'unprofessional' simply do not understand the spirit of hacking. And that is where the success of Apple, Samsung, HTC, et cetera is based on.
Swiping down on lock screen notifications is derived from swiping down on them previously to expand. The Overview button (the old recents/square) is the new open tabs icon for chrome. The keyboard can be changed back to holo dark and light as well as the much better dark material in settings (touch and hold the comma to get there quickly). A restart button would be 100% redundant clutter. The camera isn't the best, but it's not bad either once you fiddle with the settings (not many in Google camera, i know, it's crap) and learn how to use it more.
Don't agree with the restart button being clutter. I don't see how the word clutter can come into play when holding down power, something seldom done and seperate from normal system functionality. Also the camera is terrible when compared to other flagships which cost comparable amounts. It's not terrible in the sense you can take photos and view them. But most friend's who upgraded at a similar time to a flagship other than the Nexus 6 will have better looking Facebook timelines than you.
Mike I don't think you get the picture of a value. Let's say you could buy an iPhone with a contract for $1⃣ that is extremely good value. Let's say you could buy a grain of sand for 400 gold bars. That's horrible value. So when you lower the price it doesn't mean that the quality of the product will be better it will be worse. Bang for your buck. Peace 💯
The calendar view is accessed by tapping the month in the calendar app! And I think it functions much better now, since the dedicated month view wasn't that informative in the first place in-app.
Most of the reviews of the Nexus 6 have been positive, and I really love how Linus just completely changed my outlook on the device. Many of these nit-picky little things, actually affect user experience quite a bit, and most tech reviewers overlook them. I love the 2013 Nexus 7, but I still hate the button placement. Great job on the review Linus. One more thing, absolutely love the new outro animations, and your lollipop themed animations in the whole room water cooling project :)
yeah, most reviewers are afraid of the fanboys of the product they are reviewing when they try to point out it's flaws but Linus gives no fucks whatsoever, he is always straight up and is quick to point out flaws that the user will experience.
I bought a Nexus 6 last week, after holding on to my Galaxy S 2 for +3 years. I'm loving it! It's a huge leap forward in tech for me and the only thing that bothers me out of what you pointed out is the volume and power buttons being placed on the same side of the phone and so close to each other.
Seems like all of Linus's complaints were all software based, better yet Lollipop bugs and UI screw ups. Not a true fault of the hardware. I'm already running 5.0.2 (Slim) and it's a completely different phone already... I even have UI tweaks for the large screen like PIE controls. The software is where this device is not up to par simply because OEM's put more effort into it. While the N6 is just a bone-stock device. And for ~ $600 there really aren't better devices out there, name one phone that matches or beats the N6 spec for spec under $650. There are zero, at least from "brand names" And yes... You shouldn't have to flash a custom ROM to get the some of the same "standard" features as other devices, but we do have to remember this is a freaking Nexus, they are practically made for that haha. So I guess you could say: Nexus 6 - Stock = Solid device but not the best. Nexus 6 - Custom = Best overall device currently on market.
Watching this video on my Nexus 6. As an early adopter of the original Note and more than 2 year user of the Note 2 - it's the absolutely perfect device for me. I love it.
I actually think the buttons are great, too - clicky, tactile and I've never once hit volume when I intended to lock or vise-versa. I've found the camera app extremely fast and simple, although Linus' comments on quality are spot on - and I've also found Lollipop absolutely flawless to date. Not a single bug has cropped up, even the WiFi issue mentioned.
***** If I forget to charge my laptop, it is great to have all unwatched movies ready to go on my phone. Plus I like to have all my music, pictures and books with me, which is about 10GB each. Phone is something I have on myself all the time, I don´t always carry laptop...
***** Even though T-Mobile is in most of the Europe, neither they or other carriers offer unlimited plan. I have an unlimited plan because of corporate deal, but I don´t like to be dependent on my connection. Even thou its LTE or HSPA most of the time, sometimes, when I´m out of populated areas, it can go down to EDGE and that is to slow for pretty much everything. Plus, if u r moving fast, for example in a train, phones perform worse, because they have to reconnect to other nodes ;-) .
tbh, I don't think the 6+ is a good alternative. If someone was already looking at android devices, a much better recommendation is the Note 4. It's similar in size, similar in features, and most importantly, it uses the same OS. Plus, the 6+ has it's own host of issues, the most grave of all being that it's using an operating system designed to be used with one hand on a small screen on a device that is too large and unwieldy to use with one hand. And no, squishing the screen down to the bottom half so you can reach a back button is not the solution.
I would argue something like a OnePlus One would be a much better choice if you can get an invite. It has a few problems of its own but the price of the device more than justifies these problems.
Been very pleased with my Nexus 6, only down side lack of micro SD card. Dropped mine into a vat of veg oil, took it out rinsed it under a stream, shook it, carried on using it, still working fine 1 year later.
TBH it is a big deal. I've got a Nexus 5 and the camera still messes up the focus. If they didn't fix it for the N5 I don't think they will for the N6.
Firmware update... Firmware. Software updates the the... Software. While firmware updates can update the way hardware performs a process. If you're gonna sound smart or suggest something smart, use the right words.
Bro i am using nexus 6 since a month. The drawback u have shown on camera and wifi.. They are not that bad camera is fine for swiping it again for switching from capture to video recording and WiFi i have never got any problem in connecting to wifi. Once i saved my home wifi password I turn the nexus 6 wifi on it connects within 4 seconds.. And absolutely no lags while playing games and clear hd resolution which i love it.
So am I listening things wrong or what? On the Mac review having to use a tool to run software from Windows is not problem, the tool is even considered a positive... But on the Nexus 6 having multiple free camera options right on the platform's app store is detrimental to the point of going on a rant? Would it make things better if you had to pay 14 to fix it? I'm also not a fan of the Nexus 6, it was a step on the wrong direction for the Nexus line. I would much rather see a Nexus device more in line with the One M8 for example than this weird pallet but come one... Let's be, at the very least, coherent with our dislikes.
Wow, honestly for the first time I have to say Linus just sounded like a whining child in this review, especially being a techie. But I digress, if you want a REAL review, go to xda and see how people are enjoying the nexus 6 and all it has to offer. Half his complaints, if he took all of 2min to look something up or try another app, you know, something android is very useful for to alleviate his "complaints" he'd would pass on half of them. The camera issue, download another camera app, don't moan about the stock app and sit in a corner and cry. The calendar month view, took me 5 seconds to click the month and boom, month view. I bet he doesn't even know about half the tweaks to this phone, yes it's being marketed to the masses, but the main people that want this phone actually understand that android is the tinkers os, not the hand me everything because I'm too lazy to think outside the box os. And just his comment about saying he'd rather have the oem skin on Android just shows he never appreciated a pure android device in the first place. And the minute he talked about giving the older nexuses/nexi a pass because they were cheap, he lost credibility in my book, the nexus 6 is in a different playing field....rant over, I'm glad I went nexus, the 6 is amazing and will only get better with updates, something Linus really doesn't understand apparently.
if you have to download a separate app to get the camera to work well there is an issue, hes just calling out the makers of the phone because if a separate app fixes it they are just being lazy.
Ernest Lim and I completely understand that, but for this type of phone and the fact that 5.0 or 5.0.1 for most people is a BRAND NEW os and completely redone in a different way compared to the older versions of android. because literally all his complaints were software related, things that can be changed via updates, rom changes, a different app and much more. These key points are know by the vast majority of people who actually like the nexus 6 and understand the core of android. It just seemed like he just wanted to hop on the hate nexus 6 bandwagon that seems to be a trend lately as you can see by a lot of the comments. I mean come on, soooo many comments just say "I hate it because it's big, should have been smaller" if you don't like big phones, why are you even worried about this type of phone. Stick with the nexus 5.
CuddlesTheLemur I'm not saying it fixes anything, I'm saying there's other options, just like any other android phone before it. Plus any camera app issues or grips, let them know, it's not hard to update. The stock app from day one isn't the end all be all as he tries to portray to people considering this phone.
I am now an owner of nexus 6 for a month now and the honestly i haven't found any issues as most people encounter specially the wifi issues or screen burn or encryption or etc but yes i do i face small issue which my google is very sensitive to activate if i just say "OK" or "google" even though i have no intention to activate voice command and battery is varies depend on who u are and who u use and for me i actually love it since i able to get 6 hours of screen on time or often 6 hours and 30 mins before i felt it is a right time to charge my phone and camera is pretty good since i mostly take pics in full lighting places
Nexus phones were supposed to be for people that want to enjoy pure Android, that want to mess with the core, for techies, it was never about the hardware, hence the cheap price. But now that Google got everyone to the "cool" side, they thought they could rival other manufacturers by releasing a phone and price of today's standards. My opinion this is the worst Nexus to date, not spec wise, the overall package.
This kind of video is why i come here first for ALL my tech, no exceptions. Honesty and blunt truth are what we need instead of youtubers faking their reviews. Thank you Linus Sebastian for your hard work and Thank you to all the Linus Media Group members. Keep it up.
Most of the problems about the Nexus 6, with the exception of the vibration (it's way too loud), have been fixed. You do bring up some nitpicks like the multitask button (which I actually like). And while it's been just a year since the price has gone down to $200 - $250. Clearly worth the money now, and clearly better than other budget phones around the same price. A lot of the problems were in lollipop, and marshmallow is smooth as butter, hardly any lags at all. (btw hold down the power button to restart it's very easy and a lot less prone to accidental touches imo)
I personally own this phone and my WiFi has no issues, when I drive my car it even will try to connect to the WiFi signals around me at a given area. As for the side buttons I have had no trouble with them. They are very obvious which is which but i guess if you are panicking or in a hurry you might get confused. As for the camera I don't take many glam pictures unless it is for work and the quality is just fine, and I really don't use the video recorder but my app starts just fine. Maybe LinusTechTips just had some minor problems which is no excuse for Google. I still think this phone is great and I think this review has opened my eyes to my own phone a little more thank you Linus and i can't wait to see your next video!
In the settings you can change the keyboard theme to have the lines again... Also I think you might have a defective Nexus 6 because I've had move for about 2 weeks and never had the issue with the Wi-Fi
Great video LinusTech!! I own a Nexus 6 (and on Verizon) and totally agree with most of the rants, but i never had a single WiFi issue with my phone...and i do have the dbrand's carbon fiber skin on it
There is always something that Linus says that gives me a reason to give LinusTechTip videos a like. This video I watched not because i'm in the market for a phone or phablet but because Linus says something that gives me a chuckle plus the info is nice to have. Well, the whole video I was waiting for something to give me a laugh but by the end I was thinking "this is just for those that actually care about the review" and then in the last minute I finally got what I came here for, thanks Linus.
You can change the keyboard in the settings to the hollow design. To restart hold down the power button until it turns off. The software has been fine for me. I love the camera. The buttons are nice, I have no idea what you're talking about. The phone is overall a great phone, a lot of the things you complained about haven't bothered me at all.
FYI if you want month view on Google Calendar, place your finger on the month at the top of the screen, and drag down. Not the best I know, I prefer the old one too, but is IS still there Linus.
I wasn't stoked to see watch this video, I knew Linus was going to tear the Nexus 6 to shreds. I am as much of a Google fanboy as iSheep are for Apple and i-devices. I was very very excited for the Nexus 6 and was so ready to upgrade from my Note 3 to it. I was very very torn between the Note 4 and the Nexus 6. One day I was 100% decided on the Note 4, the very next day I was 100% decided on the Nexus 6. After the smoke cleared, I decided on the Note 4. I haven't had any regret with this decision, for a lot of the reasons that Linus listed, among others. One reason that Linus didn't mention was, the curved design on the back is great for ergonomics, but horrible when laying on a table and try to type on. The curved back made it wobble around and made texting while being on a table almost impossible. In the end, from what I could see, the only thing that the Nexus 6 had over the note 4, as far as hardware is concerned is the front facing speakers. People argue that the Nexus 6 receiving updates quickly is a check in its favor, Which I wouldn't argue with, but they go on to say that touchwiz on Samsung devices is horrible. To that I shrug my shoulders and say I use the Nova Launcher which fixes 98% of my beef with touchwiz.
I see Linus and LMG as the "what to buy" I always agrees with your conclusions. I was thinking about changing my Nexus 5 for a Nexus 6, but ill wait atleast till its better or theres a new Nexus phone/phablet
managed to get this for £250 in the black Friday sales and honestly I love it and think it was a steal at that price, I still have one but though when sometimes if I press the lock button when it's locked the camera app opens other than that though it's fantastic and highly recommend
I got a Nexus 6 for Christmas. No issues as of yet. I've never had any issues with wifi. My WD N900 is a decent router and paired with my N6 I've never had the wifi drop and it provides the most consistent wifi connection among all my devices. His software complaints are agreeable though. The camera app is just foolish. The app closure interface isn't the best and I would still love a "close all" option. I understand that there is no significant power drain with multiple apps "open" in the background with lollipop but the OCD side of me wants them all gone. I've got huge hands so the size isn't a issue at all. I came from a rooted cyanogenmoded note 2 and have been largely impressed with the N6. I liked the video Linus. Didn't agree with your overall view, but absolutely embrace the candor both you and Slick use to review products and software. Keep it up!
Thank you for pointing out the features that I feel the camera should have had as well. I'm impressed with how good the camera came out to be. I had 0 expectations for it. The haptic feedback is a little awful though, I have to completely disagree with the keyboard itself. I have large hands, and man do I love this keyboard. It has a nice open design to it that warms my heart and I think they did a good job on it. No WiFi problems either. I wonder why you had those problems. Shout out to Phantom G in making a glass screen protector for the Nexus 6, the right way.
I'm in love with mine. I bought it a few days ago and paired it with the aviator launcher I heard about from Linus. I have difficulty with the shutter button. But this case I have helps separate it from the others. The camera has taken some good shits and I picked up camera 360. People who use Nexus will just never be happy with a altered galaxy or locked down iPhone.
I don't know if this was mentioned already but, month view in the calendar app is there, they just moved it. Tap on the month itself. There's a little arrow there which I suppose was supposed to be intuitive enough for people to catch that its expandable but I guess not in all cases. As for the rest of your comments there are a few I agree with, especially for that premium price tag you'd expect a bit more polish. I wonder if the wifi issue is isolated to the nexus 6 or more specifically the model you were testing. I'm running lollipop on a nexus 4 for the last few weeks without any said issues.
I really thank you linus for this honest review, I agree with everything you've said about choppy/laggy performance on the latest devices... it seems that the developers are more interested in meeting the dead line than actually optimizing the operating system of the phone (and this applies to everything to be honest) and making sure that using it is as fast and smooth as it MUST be.
I have had my Nexus 6 for about a month. I can honestly tell you that this is the best phone that I've ever had. I know for some people the screen maybe a little bit too big. But once you have the phone and you play with it the screen just grows on you. Now I haven't had any problems with the phone my wifi works fine my hotspot works fine my bluetooth works fine Google now works fine I don't have not one single problem with this phone also the pictures I think it just depends on who's using the phone and how you're using it because I get great pictures. I'm glad google came out with the giant Nexus 6 it is a very very cool phone thank you google.
I adore my Nexus 6, purchased on T-Mobile launch day. I think your review was mostly on-point, but I haven't encountered some of the software issues you mentioned, especially the WiFi. My network connectivity has been pretty solid. BTW, I don't think any Nexus has had a Restart option with factory firmware. I do, however, think the phone *is* worth the price. The hardware is phenomenal, the biggest issues you pointed out seem to be Lollipop software bugs, and I bet my bottom dollar they'll be sorted out over time. The Nexus 6 is a fabulous device, bringing flagship specs and still more inexpensive than the competition.
I felt like some of your comments about they phone's software aesthetics were a little more subjective but overall I think you're spot on. For a $600+ phone they really should have more refinement included rather than waiting for it to be swept up later
NCIX vs LinusTechTips (both Linus) review of the Nexus 6: I want to say that, the emotion expressed in this video helped put the review in a more realistic stance and was able to get the message across, in my opinion... as well as being VERY enjoyable once I noticed the difference :)
Really awesome review......I would say go with the note 4 much better camera and specially the camera APP.....you can hate touchwiz but none of the other skins can provide better multitasking abilities than touchwiz....
I agree the camera is lacking many features, I too was startled with the lack of a restart option, I haven't been affected by the wifi issues though, and I don't really feel the power and volume rocker buttons are that bad, this might be due to hand size though, all in all great review
I understand Linus's complaints, however, I do believe that these few problems (including the stock camera app) could be fixed with a few updates. Linus did mention about how this is Google's first phone to run Lollipop and that it shouldn't have any of these problems or bug, but look at iOS 8... Many problems that needed to be solved at launch.
It's all going to be fixed with software updates... Android Lollipop was an OS built from the ground up which had a lot of testing involved but still is not perfect so I am sure just about everything will be fixed with android 5.1 in the next few months. So maybe Linus it would be worth trying it again?
Loving my Note 4 ! Just make sure you get the T-Mobile variant (SM-910T) if you care at all about rooting your device or unlocked bootloaders / custom ROMS
Had to check the comments just to see if others felt as I do about how he just really trashed the Nexus 6 in his review. I picked up the Nexus 6 after leaving my iPhone 6+....and absolutely love it. Haven't had any issues.
At 8:47 on Google Calendar - The monthly view is still there. You need to click on the stated month on top with the little arrow pointing bottom (in this video, "December"). I know it's not intuitive at all, I was having trouble figuring out the first time as well LinusTechTips
To get monthly view on calendar, you just need to press the month. As for keyboard, it's Android, so SwiftKey is an option. I do hope that Google does see this and improve on some of your complaints. It's not a phone for everyone, but if you like control and customization then the Nexus is the phone to get.
bought the Nexus 6 about a month and a half ago and I have to say that I love it, it's fast, a decent camera quality from both sides, and the sound is amazing! so ye I'd say it was worth the money
I too have small hands which has no implications for other parts of my body and I love my Nexus 6. I agree with your criticism regarding the haptic feedback (it's rattling away right now as I type) and also disappointed by the camera, hoping it gets tweaked and refined by future updates my like the Nexus 5, who's camera I actually grew to love. Comparing this phone to the off contract price of the Note 4 and the iPhone 6+, it more than excels in terms of value and experience. Lollipop is a triumph and in its purest form trumps iOS and Touchwiz. Add the gorgeous QHD screen and front facing speakers and there's really no other large screen phone I would want, even if they were all the same price. Let's not forget the screen to bezel ratio and brilliant curved form factor, thin is most definitely not in.
i have a nexus 6 and like the only issue i can agree with is the camera, i have no clue what you are on about with the other problems, this phone feels fucking sensational in the hand and the volume and power buttons are perfect for this type of device. Wifi is the fastest i have seen on a phone, i can download at least 15 apps within a minute and it does not even break a sweat and it has not dropped out for me ever. Now for the price i honestly think you get what you pay for, the specs are fantastic and the general user experience is amazing and you get guaranteed software updates for at least 2 years which is also the norm for contracts these days. Really is a brilliant phone.
The nexus 6 was shot in the foot, starting with the size. I congratulate him for the sincere review. Defects and quality. Had a nexus 4 and loved, but did not feel the need to switch to 5 and I do not understand why change to 6 at this price . They should have been at the cost X benefit category, because they definitely can not do a good device in all aspects. I do not think the moto x or the Droid are great, much less the s5. If Samsung, Sony and HTC make good models and AOSP versions, then I see future. Otherwise, not worth investing in Android "flagship" nowadays . Now I just have a xperia zl (cheap, fast, great camera that's blows iphone. That's android for me). With the nexus 6 come to the point already repeated in history: other tablets against the iPad. For the price they charge today, you wonder and concludes that it is better the iPad. It's all very expensive, but Apple is at least managing to deliver less defective products to out of the box. Google is loosing the race with this shit at this price. Go for oneplusone instead. It's the real nexus of the he past year.
As someone who has used stock android since 2.2, i actually agree with Linus. Stock is supposed to be simple reference for android, but this time they have cut so many corners to make it even more simple that they hid essential options under menus. Sure the camera ui looks really clean now, but it's a huge hassle to change options. On Nexus 5, you can only see 5 days at a time in the week view. Way? Since when did a week become 5 days? Why did they replace the newline button with a emoji button in hangouts? Why couldn't they have the emoji button at the side like in old hangouts so you could have both? And who's idea was it to remove lines between the letters on the keyboard? It just makes typing less accurate. I like the animations, battery improvements and speed enhancements makes lollipop great, but I just feel like I'm less productive in lollipop. If they would make the camera worth its price and done some design changes, it would be a flawless phone but currently it's really not worth 600$
Thank you Linus! I've been waiting for an honest review of the N6! This does present me with a problem though: what phone to buy in July when my contract is up! All his arguments and complaints are valid. You have to look at it from the perspective of a non techie buying the phone. Since the vast majority of cellphone users aren't super tech literate, having to download a separate camera app to fix issues that GOOGLE should have fixed with the stock app just doesn't fly. Yes the playstore is easy to use, but features that are advertised should work properly. Yes, its true that updates could fix some issues, but again, most phones don't automatically install updates and if you don't know to check, most people won't.
I have had none of the issues he has on my nexus 6 ive been using for around 2 months now, not once have I had a wifi issue, and I connect to Wifi all the time
so... idk what that is about
I really don't know why he was so negative about this phone, it is the best phone (in my opinion) I have used in a long time, and I have used a LOT of phones so i really don't understand where all the negativity comes from
I still enjoy your show Linus, no respect lost or anything, but I really don't think the issues you mentioned were large enough for the tirade and shit review you gave the phone overall
but that is just my opinion
Same goes for me not one of the issues mentioned has happened to me.
100% agree, have had the phone for 1 month now
seems youre just ignoring the points he STATED in the video cuz u are defending your purchases
***** No I am pointing out issues I legitimately didn't have. he is right the camera sucks but I don't use it so i dont care, I really don't mind the keyboard, with its size I have no issues using it, the wifi issue I HAVE NEVER HAD, was my point nor any other software glitches, I am not saying he didnt have them and that he is wrong in this review at all, I am pointing out that not every single person in the world has this issue, and that I love the phone
I am allowed to disagree with him
maybe someone should learn not to jump to conclusions
The Croaker the display sucks too ,very pink ! only samsung make good amoled displays
You guys using a different mic?
Sounds very sharp through my headphones, which hurts a little :P
Linus says later on in the video that they used the Nexus 6 to make the video - hence different mic.
Tintin Onacid That is not entirerly clear. He could also mean he used it for review only. Either way, the sound is horrible.
***** that isnt an indication of a bad headphone.. pleb
***** So only 1 headphone? left or right?
I hear different mic too. they using different mic today
Great. Took you 2 full years of your investment to finally be satisfied
Yeah just like Apple wouldn't design a phone to be used with your hand with your hand killing the radio signal unless you hold it unnaturally....wait...
dimitriid
I forgot about that fail. That was a pretty hilarious screw up.
I also like how Apple tried to justify the design by blaming us for holding it wrong.
microsf121 Typical Apple :p
dimitriid and if I remember correctly, calls dropped if you used the iphone 4 with your left hand
Linus, use the Nexus 6P. You might love its camera.
That outro reading fail. Hilarious.
Also props to Edzel for the amazing graphics!
Oh yes the calendar. I forgot that. It sucks, I agree with you strongly on that part.
Vanilla Android Experience is becoming lame.
have fun trying to multitask using two tiny screens while lagging from samesuck lagwiz
Toa Note 4 owner; have not experienced this 'lag' you speak of.
The phone isn't 600 dolars that's with a contract WAIT UNTIL YOY CAN upgrade duh
Seth Parr
You sir deserve more upvotes.
***** If you want a restart button on Lollipop then check out Quick Reboot within the Play Store. This maybe an option for you.
According to this review video I would say:
dbrand skins: 9/10
Nexus 6: 3/10
lol
Mike I don't think you get the picture of a value. Let's say you could buy an iPhone with a contract for $1⃣ that is extremely good value. Let's say you could buy a grain of sand for 400 gold bars. That's horrible value. So when you lower the price it doesn't mean that the quality of the product will be better it will be worse. Bang for your buck. Peace 💯
Nexus 6 with rice: 7/10
More a reference to the meme that sprung up around it.
His humour: 9/10
In Google calender you tap the text for the month you are viewing which brings up a month view
Linus is seriously the most honest reviewer on RUclips. I really appreciate his attitude and rants towards these devices.
You should do a Nexus 6P review
Do it, Linus!
subscribed on the basis of this video. I love people who are passionate about tech and take reviewing seriously.
KUDOS
Seems like all of Linus's complaints were all software based, better yet Lollipop bugs and UI screw ups. Not a true fault of the hardware.
I'm already running 5.0.2 (Slim) and it's a completely different phone already... I even have UI tweaks for the large screen like PIE controls. The software is where this device is not up to par simply because OEM's put more effort into it. While the N6 is just a bone-stock device.
And for ~ $600 there really aren't better devices out there, name one phone that matches or beats the N6 spec for spec under $650. There are zero, at least from "brand names"
And yes... You shouldn't have to flash a custom ROM to get the some of the same "standard" features as other devices, but we do have to remember this is a freaking Nexus, they are practically made for that haha.
So I guess you could say:
Nexus 6 - Stock = Solid device but not the best.
Nexus 6 - Custom = Best overall device currently on market.
Someone actually understands, I don't understand why it's so hard for everyone else
As i NX4 5.0.2 user, i do agree with you.
Thats true but I guess Linus expectet a perfect phone to come out with the Nexus 6
Everyone owning an android phone and watching linus videos, should flash a custom rom and tinker around with it. Otherwise just get an iPhone.
JJop123 More people then only him understand:). We just keep our mouths shut and facepalm
'non upgradable storage'. Well, that's that
That's nothing new with nexus devices...
Unfortunately google keeps pushing for cloud storage. No thanks!
bass5445 it will always happen, but then again some people (myself) dont mind since i dont use all my 32gb up
*****
If I forget to charge my laptop, it is great to have all unwatched movies ready to go on my phone.
Plus I like to have all my music, pictures and books with me, which is about 10GB each. Phone is something I have on myself all the time, I don´t always carry laptop...
*****
Even though T-Mobile is in most of the Europe, neither they or other carriers offer unlimited plan.
Much Better outro. No where near as time consuming and am less likely to skip
Good, if they don't put in the work, they get what they deserve. Very disappointed in Google, buy a 6plus instead of this.
No. Just no. The Nexus 6 and 6+ have the same problems, and the Nexus 6 is still arguably better bar the camera. Both are a waste. Get a G3 or Note 4.
tbh, I don't think the 6+ is a good alternative.
Rambir Khatkar I concur.
I would argue something like a OnePlus One would be a much better choice if you can get an invite. It has a few problems of its own but the price of the device more than justifies these problems.
Why buy the 6+ when you can buy other Android phones running Lollipop?
Been very pleased with my Nexus 6, only down side lack of micro SD card. Dropped mine into a vat of veg oil, took it out rinsed it under a stream, shook it, carried on using it, still working fine 1 year later.
When will debrand finally expand to Europe? :(
The ship worldwide actually..
really? gotta check that out - hope the delivery fees aren't what i expect them to be :D
Cheap and quick delivery world wide I ordered on saturday night got it in the mail friday morning, the Netherlands as well.
Got one for my Nexus 4 a year ago, paid like $4 for the shipping to EU.
J.W van Wijngaarden heb je m al?
Good job teasing this video in the imac video, by having the script on screen.
That means I know some of what's coming up though.
The camera focus and the rest of the issues can be fix with software update. No big of a deal.
'can' and 'will' are two different things.
***** then delay the product. car makers don't say "well we wanted to integrate this new feature, so trac control and all-wheel drive will come later"
2-4 months later..
Bro i am using nexus 6 since a month.
The drawback u have shown on camera and wifi..
They are not that bad camera is fine for swiping it again for switching from capture to video recording and WiFi i have never got any problem in connecting to wifi.
Once i saved my home wifi password
I turn the nexus 6 wifi on it connects within 4 seconds..
And absolutely no lags while playing games and clear hd resolution which i love it.
dodged a bullet there... got the Note 4. Phew!
Love the new outro Linus, good work to all at LTT :)
Man, after watching yours phone reviews I jest have to say... Go ahead with more! They are without a doubt best on YT. Props!
Use Open Camera
Thanks for finally updating the outro :D
If it's not Apple, I don't want it.
Yes u are stupid fan boy
Nice troll it made me think twice
He uses a HTC One M8 as his daily driver :)
I am using an iPhone and like the small size but this comment is stupid give other phones a chance!
If it's apple, i don't want it
That is a honest review! Thumbs up for that Linus!
Your voice sounds wierd! New mic??
Yea something is up
If you tap the name of the month it displays all the days of that month, love your videos linus.
Well you still need to know the good and the bads
if you have to download a separate app to get the camera to work well there is an issue, hes just calling out the makers of the phone because if a separate app fixes it they are just being lazy.
Ernest Lim
and I completely understand that, but for this type of phone and the fact that 5.0 or 5.0.1 for most people is a BRAND NEW os and completely redone in a different way compared to the older versions of android. because literally all his complaints were software related, things that can be changed via updates, rom changes, a different app and much more. Stick with the nexus 5.
i guess you suffered en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-purchase_rationalization
CuddlesTheLemur
I'm not saying it fixes anything, I'm saying there's other options, just like any other android phone before it.
Perfect unbiased review of the Nexus 6 I've watched so far! Kudos..👍
I just got the nexus 6 a week ago (Dec 31), I haven't had any problems with the wifi. I totally agree with everything else you had mentioned though
In the settings you can change the keyboard theme to have the lines again... Also I think you might have a defective Nexus 6 because I've had move for about 2 weeks and never had the issue with the Wi-Fi
I've had the nexus 6 since November 2014. I love it.
Great video LinusTech!! I own a Nexus 6 (and on Verizon) and totally agree with most of the rants, but i never had a single WiFi issue with my phone...and i do have the dbrand's carbon fiber skin on it
Very good review I feel much the same someone at school got one and gave it back within the first week.
To that I shrug my shoulders and say I use the Nova Launcher which fixes 98% of my beef with touchwiz.
love the new motion graphics addition to the videos.
Thank you for reviewing this I've been looking at this phone
Great video! Sound is a little harsh though.
Edit: Also loving the new format!
Loving the sponsor scrolling bar!
Nexus 5 for life..glad I got mine when they first came out.
I Agree with this review. Glad someone stood up.
Great video thanks!
As for the size of the phone, I'm totally with you there - it's ridiculous, why are manufacturers going this way?!
Great coverage. Especially of the camera. 👍
I felt like some of your comments about they phone's software aesthetics were a little more subjective but overall I think you're spot on. For a $600+ phone they really should have more refinement included rather than waiting for it to be swept up later
NCIX vs LinusTechTips (both Linus) review of the Nexus 6:
I want to say that, the emotion expressed in this video helped put the review in a more realistic stance and was able to get the message across, in my opinion...
as well as being VERY enjoyable once I noticed the difference :)
A harsh but fair review, nice job. I was going to go for this and sell my Nexus 5, think I'll look for something else.
Thanks Linus for unbiased review, keep up the good job.
Agree with your comment, but it's more toward Lollipop as OS, and Google Camera as apps.
9:25 Majestic Linus reflection.
This was a well done review. Thanks Linus
On the Calendar you can click the month on the top to reveal the CALENDAR View. Or Drag it downside, it's the same.
i have a nexus 6 and like the only issue i can agree with is the camera, i have no clue what you are on about with the other problems, this phone feels fucking sensational in the hand and the volume and power buttons are perfect for this type of device.
It's the real nexus of the he past year.
if you didnt know, you can swipe down on the calander app to see the months. its kinda weird but it works
Yes, its true that updates could fix some issues, but again, most phones don't automatically install updates and if you don't know to check, most people won't.
nice christmas tree linus, and great review keep it up
linus was a little tough on this phone...i did a lot of research in the nexus 6 but i went with the note 4 instead and i am quite happy
