Magic incurred a lot of backlash in the immediate aftermath of the Westhead firing, as Johnson had demanded to be traded. A lot of fans & media types (even some Laker fans) labelled Magic a "coach killer" and a "malcontent". However, history has certainly validated Magic's stand. Pat Riley came in and immediately opened up the Laker offence, allowing Magic more freedom & creativity. This allowed the Lakers to become SHOWTIME, and when the Lakers went on to win the title in '82, any thoughts of Magic being a malcontent were forgotten. Pat Riley went on to become a legendary coach in Laker history, while Westhead is largely forgotten.

LOL. Like Kobe when Shaq got traded.... because the Buss loved him over Shaq (not my opinion). Anyone else would've traded Kobe over Shaq.

The irony of this is that Westhead ran an up-tempo style at Loyola Marymount and Riley ran a grin=nd it half-court offense in New York and Miami after he left the Lakers.

I think westhead wanted to prove to ppl he could come up with his own way of winning. What we know as showtime style of play began with McKinney. Paul probably was getting the “yea you won but it was McKinneys scheme that helped you” so he changed the offense to make it distinctly his to the lakers detriment. Plus he was stubborn

Guys he never said they were on the bus that particular day he said they always sat in the back of the bus. He probably meant in later years when those guys were on the team.

Copper makes it sound like Worthy and Scott were there when Westhead was fired. Obviously that is impossible since neither were in the NBA at the time.

WOW that's a lot of insight and this is how Dr Jerry Buss, built the show time Lakers bye doing what's right for the super star Player when someone doesn't fit unlike his daughter with the same situation replying"Make it work, when no Player or coach in 14 year's have been able to make it work with Westbrook and if the Lakers keep him they are DOOMED PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

It’s a wayyyyy different time as we discussed. It’s nearly impossible to be as fair as dr buss was in the nba of the 1980s.

@@andreaschristophorou3374 Just wanted to say Andreas, I grew up eating, drinking, and sleeping Showtime Lakers! I lived in So Cal in 1975 and would watch the Laker games on TV when they just had Nixon, Kareem, and Coop and had the Sonics beat them. Finally, of course, Magic was drafted in 1979 and I was pumped.
Well, my mom decided it was time for us as a family to move to Salt Lake City which we did in March of '80! I became an enemy in a foreign land! I had Jazz season tickets every year and the Lakers basically owned the Jazz until May of 1988 when the classic 7 game series occurred with the 2 teams!
They were some magical times Andreas! I miss those days watching the mighty skyhook, Big Game James, the Coopaloop, and those great fastbreaks that would bring the roof of The Forum off. Great times!

@@edkiely2712 Well, mom knows best but still i would be furious. 😅 If you saw the Lakers since 1975 this means you saw plenty of one of the best MVP seasons ever, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's 1975-76 season. I was born in Greece in 1984 and grew up in Cyprus so the chances i had to see the 90s Lakers or find clips of the 80s Lakers were limited. Still, Magic and Kareem, not Shaq and Kobe are the reason that i wanted to go out and try to do stuff that i knew i couldn't do and still are my favorite players of all time. I had to wait for Curry's Warriors to find a team that gave me similar happiness watching fast break or half court fast tempo basketball. I tried to find as much information about the Lakers and i love their history both in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. Your memories are great memories to have.
