Utterly brilliant and tragically underrated piece of guitar work. Dude had people convinced he was using an octave pedal for decades, when he was just doing it manually, and all with a slide on his pinky. One of the greatest rock riffs of all time, couched in a silly bit lovable song ❤️ You rock Greg, thanks for doing this video.
What a great inside, after all those years!! I always loved that guitar sound and song, and now, so many years later I discover th the mystery. Wonderful!! Thank you so much for sharing this!!
I knew this song was in an open tuning! The Stones-esque phrasing gives it away. In the Hal Leonard Steve Miller anthology book, the transcriber wrote it out in standard tuning. What a nightmare to try and play it that way. This makes so much more sense and many thanks to Greg for sharing how to play it correctly, especially the fills and those chord voicings on the chorus.
Saw Mr. Douglas about 50 yrs ago in my hometown of Antioch CA. at the fairgrounds there....He has a band called Mistress back then....Also seen him in Golden Gate park at one of the free shows there....Summer of Love or Woodstock anniversary shows maybe...
ah ha cool very cool now i must get one one of my other guitars and get into this tuning and try to learn this classic thanks greg for walking us thru this
sending out good energy to everyone in the world that's trying to make a difference for the good of all humanity this is the future and this is the time now to make the difference for all
I was Greg's roadie from 1987 until 1992, those were some fun times. As far as Jungle Love goes listen to the original by Mistress called Paul words and vocals by Brian Kilcourse, drums by Bill Baron, and guitar by Greg Douglass
Curious what gauge strings he uses to tune up a whole step on a few strings without snapping any strings... Keith is tuning down to G. Much easier. Sounds amazing though!
The tone is killer and he only mentions the “sqonk” of the guitar pickups in the vid. Sounds like a cocked wah to my ears but it’s not that. Perhaps we can get more insight on the amp and tone settings. 🤔
Greg Douglass was very productive in 2000 &, unless this channel has changed his mind re wishing him well as I can't find a referral for a recent one, maybe you can find his 2000 Solo cd Teeter if not Former Members (same crowd).
Genius song. Not knowing the secret combination of partial slide and open-A tuning makes it impossible to capture all the cool nuances of this guitar part.
Awesome - glad to see you were able to have Greg demo it himself. I think it was my video Greg referenced as "the one who got it right" or closest to right. We had a little conversation in the comments about it, super happy he approved. ruclips.net/video/7kh6xSjOzv8/видео.html Thanks for having the man show it himself though - super creative and timeless guitar part.
Greg Douglass was the ONLY other Guitarist- credited or not- as a co-lead Guitarist w/Hot Tuna & so for about 6 months until he suggested that Jorma take care of the rhythm guitar work & he takes the Leads. He's still the only Guitar Player who's co-credited on anything w/the original Hot Tuna.
I LOVE your lessons! They're very accurate, you explain them very clearly and we must be about the same age because you pick all the songs that I think are cool and want to learn!

@@mrcomenttoe2009 i totally appreciate that. I will if the opportunity presents itself. In the meantime, I’ll be doing my regular bass builds, repairs and demo videos. Thanks for watching!
There is nothing better than to watch the original artist play their song. What a cool experience!
It's even better to play gigs with him. Thanks for commenting!

This is a fantastic video. Jungle Love was always complex until playing it the proper way in Open A tuning. Amazing!
Thanks so much for your comment!!
Thank you Greg for sharing this! One of the coolest ever guitar parts explained!
Well this made my day! What a great artist and riff-laden masterpiece.
Great interview! Thanks so much for sharing. Open A! Love it! No wonder there was something special about this tune that always eluded me.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!
I've always really liked the guitar work on this one. Thank you Greg and thank you JD!!!
Thanks for that!
Tryning to figure out this song drove me nuts. It is so great to see the guy who first did it. Thanks so much for posting this. Tip of the cap to all.
Glad we could be of service!
Great to hear how Greg actually played the song. And I love that Iceman he's got. It plays so smooth 👍🏻 Fantastic 😁
@@SEVNTIGERS thanks for that!

Very cool. Thanks for your memories.
Absolutely excellent! Thanks for sharing the mysterious intricacies of this part.
Thank you for your comment!!
It was definitely a killer party song California was always rocking the hell out of it
This is awesome.. I would’ve never figured that out, without Greg

Straight from the master, himself!
This guys f****** great, what a "smokin" guitar masterpiece. I wonder how he thought up these incredible guitar riffs for this song.
Thanks for your comment!
Yes a masterpiece that's for sure that's what I wanted to say
I always liked that line where everything is Peaches and Cream

Hello RUclips!! What amp is he playing?? His tone is absolutely amazing! Im guessing a vintage Vox Ac15? Thank you!!

@srwaite7 It's diffinently reminiscent of the cocked wah thing, but to me, not as intense as a actual parked wah.
Fantastic
This is and take a look at real talent and a creative musical genius.
Now, please tell us how you get that awesome guitar sound.
Let's try to think of how many thousands we've heard this track played on the radio right
Love love love this riff and playing
Cool as F_***

Great to learn it from the origin
Master Piece!!
Thank you for your comment!!
Brilliant...VanHalen and Greg have similar style.
Thank you for your comment!
Nice video
Super cool. I do it in standard and swing it like EVH might if he had covered it. It’s all wrong, but sounds cool and works well.
Cool! Thanks for your comment!
yea mee too
Me also💯🎶❤️🔥🎶💯
12:05 is the play through of Jungle Love
This totally explains why I could never figure this song out, much less match the record, when trying to play along when I was a kid.
Thanks for your comment! Glad we could help.
Aha Open A!! Cool vid!
Thank you brother!
You guys know there was a band called Jungle Love as well

Really was an outstanding video specially showing the guitar licks and I'm not even a guitar player just a big fan
Yep trying to play this back in 78 or so was real wizardry
Song was sped up which makes it harder to get proper tuning an sound
When ya slow a song down the tuning changes.
