A special compliment and thank you to Victor Ambrus! May he rest in peace!
Thank you for posting these, in the states this is one of the only ways we can get these shows. I hope this finds you all well in the United Kingdom, and thank you again
If you have Amazon video there are a few seasons to be found.

Plus we don’t have many Roman forts here in the States either. ;-)

I like your nationality, as well as all nationalities from our world. Congratulations for the Brexit (if you are a Briton), keeping your heritage clean and undisturbed!

I've got to be in there somewhere.
@@iosca40 Bruh, keep politics out of this. You can be a proud Brit and still vote to remain. It's not mutually exclusive. You should not say things like this if you don't know a lot about British politics. The way you phrased it just sounds racist. Raksha Dave, one of the most prominent members of Time Team, has foreign ancestors and she's doing a lot more for British heritage than most Brits!
@@Rymontp Your just another internet bully telling people what they should and should not say. God forbid anyone having an opinion different then yours. 47:04 - Looks like a surveyor's plumb bob. They haven't changed much over the centuries and have always needed to be pointed to align with exact spots on the ground. The Romans were brilliant surveyors. I think one of these Time Team episodes even demonstrates Roman surveying technique.
Can’t remember what episode, but yes they do demonstrate a Roman surveying technique in another episode.
Used it against modern gps and it was within a couple feet i saw that episode also
Tony holding a baby is as natural as Phil with a shovel.

Land was often granted to former soldiers after their retirement. Is it possible that a retired soldier-turned-farmer would use the military ditches he was taught to dig in the battlefield to ring his wheat field?
Good theory...and plausible. Well done.
I enjoy watching time team.
Enjoying watching Time Team Classics on You Tube, looking forward to new episodes this summer
I'd be interested in follow-up investigations of these sites after the team has packed up.
I agree watching them come so close to finding something and then the last day nothing 🥴 I want them to go back and keep digging I just watched one and they were so close but nothing I felt like saying KEE DIGGING ‼️
Why only three days. I know these blokes have more time on their hands.
Do a search. I ve read continuations of digs exist. Seen the links on comment boards of other episodes
@@michael7324 lol no they dont Phil is working on the Waterloo Dig at Hugemont Farm for the last 10yr, the others work for the British Historic Trust, Mick Ashton was a Professor of Archaeology, they are all academics so no they dont have alot of time on their hands hence 3day exploration digs. If the digs warrant extra time local volunteer archeologist or enthusiasts continue with the work.
13:13 me being a nurseryman... spades are primarily cutting tools. Etymology. From Latin spatha ("a type of sword"), from from Ancient Greek ( ) spathe , "broad blade " / used properly, in a cutting motion from either left to right or vice versa it is an excellent design, sorry Phil shovels and spades are used differently. Greetings from the sunny climes of Basle, Switzerland.
Thanks for straightening Phil out. From a 97 year old farm boy from the Ozark Mountains of Southern Missouri in the U.S.A.
Both words have the same root. It is not a borrowing-loanword. www.etymonline.com/word/spade en.wiktionary.org/wiki/spade
Spade and Shovel are used interchangeable and have been for decades if not centuries. Words can have more than one meaning and those meanings don't always have to align with their etymology.
If Phil asks for a spade you know what he's wanting, and it's not what he had in his hand at that moment.
@@TestECull Ace of Spades, he, Phil was questioning the 'poor' design of spades used by the Romans, remember?

Baldric! Oh man, good to see Tony Robinson! This seems like a very cunning plan? “As cunning as a fox who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University?”
I love these!
Sometimes I think Phil could find a roman fort here in Minnesota! Just Joking!
The picture this paints for me is an over night camp for an army on the march, possibly centered on an existing farm and with the ditches facing the most likely line of attack. When the Roman army moved on the farm lived on and saw use during the Roman occupation. Over time the ditches got filled in with various bits which included the lightly used coin from the invasion era and everything that came after.
Why is this show so good?
Could it have been an encampment? The Roman military was a surprisingly cautious animal & when invading wild lands had a tendency to establish some tents & a few patrols at the first stop while the scouts went looking for a better site to build the fort. Kind of like a beach head in modern warfare.
Don't forget that Caesar Invaded in roughly the same spot nearly 100 years earlier.
Never knew that. Thanks for the info!
@@nebelwerfer199 Caesar invaded in 55BC and again in 54BC. Both times building many camps during the campaigns but started with a main camp near where this dig takes place.
ruclips.net/video/o1NdZ87eUWc/видео.html 1st invasion
ruclips.net/video/AOCG8uqaIEk/видео.html 2nd invasion
@@tomcrouchman I knew he invaded just didn't know it was in that area. They must have had some presence there after Caesar left and Claudius returned. Funny they used same spot to land.
@@tomcrouchman : This is my thinking. The ditches weren't for a fort but encampments - more temporary fortifications.
I was a helicopter mechanic and having in Vietnam and spent at least 2,000 hours in the air in helicopters. I am always worried when they go up. I've watched all the time team episodes so I know there wasn't that bad a helicopter episode.
You don't see much of the helicopter in this episode but it is a Bell Jet Ranger with floats that can be inflated in case of an emergency landing on water. It probably makes passengers feel safer. However, I also worked offshore oil rigs as a helicopter mechanic. In most cases, a helicopter will not stay upright on those floats. They land on the water and then turn over with the floats up and the rest of the helicopter under the water. I find that very scary. It usually costs lives when one lands on the water.
No one on Time Team ever seems concerned when they go up in a helicopter. I'm always concerned when I go up in a helicopter. The number of accidents per flight time is fairly low but, on average, helicopter accidents are much more dangerous than fixed-wing accidents. 🤯
Digging ditches isn't very fun. I couldn't imagine trying to do it while wearing full armor.
Love Time Team, but I always hated the forced drama with the 3 day limit! I get the point of a short archaeological dig, but yet.
The reason for the three day limit has to do with most of the team also working at universities. They dig on the weekends and then return to teaching the rest of the week. It isn't some sort of arbitrary deadline, it's one required out of necessity.
It's not forced drama, it's scheduling conflicts between the archaeologist's university gigs and production constraints getting episodes out weekly.
If you want forced drama look at American TV.
5 days would be expensive and a laundromat would need to be included 😊
thank you very much!
Always Splendid and Perfect From Your Friend On YTube,Great Episode
Love the LONG trenches But so sad to find that once again there was no roman fort:-(
.Thanks
Any thoughts for sending the Romans a bill for all this pottery they litter about? One coin hardly dents the cost of a dig !
Why does Tony appear in the thumbnail like he's starting a scrum in the pub?! lol
Found this very interesting
Is Tony .... by saying "scotched" saying that "it was NOT a Roman fort/fortress"?
What a great bunch of BLOKES. Better luck next time. Great Video.
THANKS
Why were our ancestors always dropping their money?
Holey pockets.
No bank cards, no bank notes. There were a lot of coins being used, the Romans had a huge army to fund, all in coin. Then you also have a lot of time too which results in millions of people doing millions of actions.
Millions of coins combined with being easy to loose. Just think about how often you see a penny on the street.
Same reason we're always dropping our money. Coins are easy to lose.
Poor Neil always seems a little out of his depth🤔 I miss Mick or Francis at these times 😋
Classic Phil!
Spoiler alert. Nope.. 😬 but watch anyway because COOL FINDS!!
Why no use of GPR and/or electrical resistivity imaging (ERI), and/or magnetometry, and /or electromagnetic induction (EM or EMI)? Is the traditional ditch method the least expensive first option, with more advanced tech to follow up if things look promising but frustrating?
I think the magnetics.... could / should run inside the trenches to get the trench depth more. It might be just enough to identify a layer just out of their range. What could it hurt to test. Overlay existing data and see if it changes.
I think Europe is quite full of historic artifacts and buildings buried underground.
Maybe. I own some land where no one has ever lived because it is swamp. But there is wooden waterwell middle of it. It really doesnt make any sense!
@@juhajuntunen7866 How do you know it's always been a swamp?
Its typical peat bog, quite common here and middle of it has small stream.
I wouldn't be so quick to rule out a fort. 3 days is hardly enough time to be certain. I have the feeling that they were thrown off by all the later Roman activity on the site.
How long really does it take to put on this armor? Scouts and spotters can see for miles. I kinda doubt they were in full armor.
Time Team needs to get Suzanna Lipscombe and Ruth Goodman on their team......British Women are the absolute best ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
luv the show, and luv the people
Weird to see Baldrick being this smart in 2021!
there is some flaws about the information they give here.. they were digging out a fort a few ep. ago were the town got flodded by the ocean near the fort and it still is flooded, and in this ep. they say the coastline was much closer back then.. dont that mean the socalled town close to the fort in the previous ep. would be in reach and not under water?
Why does it look like Tony's about to throw some hands in the thumbnail of this vid?
I wish I search for a fort for a living. Dan big ditch 38:00 -say that three times
Pretty much the only show that you can trust to tell the truth these days.
My question is… why did everything get destroyed ?
I love to see Carenzas baby!

Oh dear. 4thC coin. Not good enough. Need 1stC. Ah well. Back to digging. Only on TimeTeam. Anyone else would have been doing a wee coin dance.
Can anyone tell me please why, as an historian, I find Tony a thinking woman’s bit of crumpet? He’s got more attractive as he’s got older. I think it’s because he makes me 😊
Poor old geophys hardly ever works. I think they contribute positive results once every 3rd or 4th show.
Does anyone know the reason why they always have only three days on these archaeological digs? It is sometimes frustrating to me that they stop just when the finds they make become more interesting and they have to stop their dig. 😕
They all have regular jobs digging for Universities and such. These shows are done on their "weekends".
@@johnmullen9478 Oh I see. Thank you so much for your reply.
@@johnmullen9478 And also to keep costs manageable. Even producing three day episodes was very expensive.
@@georgedorn1022 That is a good point George.
Short answer: 48:27
Stupid question.
So, you're digging trenches. How do you know when you've found a Roman "ditch" when you're essentially digging your own?
They are digging there own but when they are digging down they are looking for Roman fill aka Roman trash i.e. pottery. They are also able to see if the dirt is different then the rest of the area, any burning or clay etc.
Cosplay Archeology.... Who knew that was a thing... Leave it to Tony and the crew. You made my day however gonna need therapy after seeing above Phil's shorts linings. 😂
If geophys sees nothing they are always right. If a pilot does not trust his instruments he flys in to the ground.
Trench trench... god.. they must get sick of this word trench
Let me guess... 3 days? 1:14 Yup.

I thought that the Romans were
invited to stay in Britain (?)
Some British tribes welcomed them, others not so much.
It would be more beneficial for the Time constraints of the show. If they used a “ strip mine approach “ to finding some of these hidden treasures!!!
Duhh! Strip mining is NOT Archaeology.
@@georgenelson8917 It would make the show so much more interesting, Besides they have time commitments and lot ground to cover !!! Pressure washers should be used on ancient Roman frescoes. When they find them. To bring out the the real colors !!!
