I get why we don't see the string. What I don't get is why I still can't see a sign of the red ball swinging round to the back at 0:14 in slow motion. Is it THAT fast? Short string?
To everyone complaining about quality and resolution, this is Quirkology's aesthetic. Now can we simply let it go and learn to enjoy the videos as they are and focus on the content rather than the appearance.
When he brings his hands together at about :15, you should be able to see the ball swing around behind him since there is a rather large gap between his right hand and torso. Since his left arm/hand is not big enough to fill the space, you would have to be blind not to see the ball swing around. In the video, however, you don't. Something smells fishy here.
I think he covers the ball with his left hand as he moves it towards his torso. It must have taken a lot of takes to ensure he timed his hand with the swing of the ball perfectly, but it is definitely possible.

There is something fishy about the explanation. I can't see how did you cover up the ball movement so well. The ball trajectory is going to show the ball. Is this explanation for real? I watched many times, but still I think the explanation is not the real one.
You would have to get some "invisible" thread (string) to get this to work better. Though the demonstration may have switched out the thin plastic thread for the dark thread. If you were outdoors, you could go stringless just as long as you are playing music near a water fountain with an small object that appears invisible under water (like a small transparent ball) that doesn't float. I suppose there are multiple ways to do this trick once I think about it.

It seems like he's doing this the hard way. If he was a magician rather than a quirkologist, he'd just palm the ball and wouldn't need the amusing set up with the string and the thing on his back.
