Bruce’s magic lies partly in his ability to put himself into the characters he writes about. This one is particularly powerful as he puts himself, and us, right into the horror that was 9/11, and into one of the many emergency first responders who daily put their lives on the line for us. He turns their sacrifice into a celebration with his wonderful lyrics.❤❤❤❤❤
My brother-in-law Dennis is retired FDNY and was there on 9/11. He worked "The Pit" for nearly six months straight, despite being in tremendous pain due to his fire boots melting to his feet from the intense heat on that first day. Fast forward to the present, I am in my 16th season as the Music Director for the Florida Everblades Hockey Team in Estero, Florida. Every year we have a Guns and Hoses game with our local police and firefighters during our season. I have played this song at the end of their game every year as a tribute to all of our Heroes. All I can see in my mind's eye is the photo of the firefighter going up the stairs of the WTC while everyone else was going down. Thank you to all that made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you to all who served and those, like Sam, that continue to serve. God Bless.
I`m not American. But today hits deep. Still remember 9/11. 20 years ago today. I was only 21 years old. Seeing pictures of it still brings tears to my eyes. I`ll never understand. But "The Rising" was such a powerful message during that time. Somehow, it helped get through it. Like Bruce`s music helped me get through my life ever since I was 13. I`m far from being okay. But he`s the constant in my life that helps me get going.
This video is one of my annual 9/11 rituals. It’s important to remember. And this song is one of the best ways I know of to remember those first responders who lost their lives in the Towers.
The whole album ‘The Rising’ truly is the musical tribute worthy for those affected by 9/11. When the world was shocked and in pain for what happened, Bruce brought words and music of much needed healing into our hearts.
Whatever Patti's doing with her voice is just heavenly - like an angel. "May your strength give us strength, may your faith give us faith..." Hail the E-Street Band.
Springsteen has always been a story teller. Sometimes his lyrics transcend what a human can express. Then he adds music from E Street Band: their vocals come from another world, their musical instruments connected to the story as an orchestra. They draw you into the story slowly, and when you are starting to comprehend it, a wall of sound hits you like a freight train of emotion. A spiritual awakening. I never get tired of this song. It's truly magical. Thank you Bruce and E-Street.
Just read this and possibly the best explanation of the utter genius of Bruce Springsteen. You can never hear his songs too many times as there is always some element that unravels itself on each listen.
The final chorus is a prayer that resonates today in the midst of the turmoil and division we are experiencing. If faith and hope could give everyone the strength to shout less and listen more, perhaps that prayer could be answered.
I cannot listen to this song, I cannot sing this song .. without tears running down my face. It is THE song that honors the firemen selflessly giving their lives to save others. The lyrics are perfect. The music sweet and yet powerful. God Bless America.
John Doyle I used to sing both my girls to sleep with a medley when they were little: this to start. They always looked a bit baby face confused because they felt intuitively in their toddler souls that this dealt with huge great massive things out there that were dark but somehow inspiring. Followed by Thunder Road. Followed by Racing in the streets at the end of which they were ALWAYS asleep without fail, aided by when the rimshot comes in at we took all the action... simulated by my foot tapping any available surface and my arms boggling them up and down JUST when they were getting r e a l l y s l e e p y - reverse psychology always wins! What a joy joy joy it is to discover gems like this (there a live pro shot of Land Oifig Hope and Dreams that always reduces me to a blubbering wreck too) so long after the fact especially when said daughters are teens and eating up my gig budget do the last time I saw the Boss was 2012😢 What art. What humanity. What a legacy for millions. Sorry about length of comment
Bruce released this song along with the album the rising after 9/11 it’s about all the firefighters and emergency workers and civilians who lost their lives on 9/11
Mere words cannot express the emotional power of this song, as is true of so many of Springsteen and the E Street Band's songs. Much respect to them all.
Patti is transcendent on this, very evocative, carries our grief out into the open. That is the power of music right there, the shared emotional experience.
Bluesbabesrv but it’s beautiful too. It’s showing that we lost so many good people, but that we can look up to them and be like them, we can all be heroes. He brought America back together and showed that we can come back from those terrorist attacks. It’s easy to destroy things but it’s hard to bring them back together, but as Americans we CAN come back together and we damn sure did
🤔 IDK why there aren’t MORE views, comments (and RECENT ones) on this 💟 song’s video with 🎤 Bruce and Patti, etc. posted 5 yrs ago?! I’m 70ish now and ‘grew up’ with his music, but for some reason appreciate and listen to him/them a lot now then back in my younger years. I’ve watched the complete 2002 Barcelona concert, and thought every song and performance was 👏! Bruce’s vocal style and the lyrics seemed somewhat different in this concert from his usual imo. I was lucky 🍀 enough to have seen him live at a Coldplay concert 3 +/- yrs ago when he appeared as a special ‘guest’ at the finale and did duets with Chris Martin of ‘Dancing in the Dark’ and ‘I’m on Fire’. BOTH were on 🔥 with two of Bruce’s ‘classic’, well known songs from way back. (I can’t understand why a lot of the ‘young’ people in the audience were booing Bruce 🤷♀️ though. He looked great for his age and sang/performed as well as he used to!) I think the Baby Boomer’s - born 1945-65 - for the most part had better music/artists compared with most of today’s so-called ‘talented’, as well as life in general around the world 🌎 being kinder, peaceful, and simple!
Bruce’s magic lies partly in his ability to put himself into the characters he writes about. Red's voice is beautiful. Thank you Patty!!!!!

All the more powerful and poignant knowing that their son is now a fire fighter.

I played this my Dad's funeral. Faith, hope, love, strength. All 300 people cried.
This video is one of my annual 9/11 rituals. It’s important to remember. And this song is one of the best ways I know of to remember those first responders who lost their lives in the Towers.
Hauntingly beautiful! The Rising is such an incredible album, but this version of the song is pure perfection. ❤
The whole album ‘The Rising’ truly is the musical tribute worthy for those affected by 9/11. When the world was shocked and in pain for what happened, Bruce brought words and music of much needed healing into our hearts.
Music is a way to say things that are not easy or can not be said, or embody deep feelings. He will ALWAYS be my Jersey Boy.
Somewhere between heaven and Earth lies the lyrics of Bruce Springsteeen .... amen.
true
and Red's voice
Amen. To. That.
Whatever Patti's doing with her voice is just heavenly - like an angel. "May your strength give us strength, may your faith give us faith..." Hail the E-Street Band.

Richard Smith lovely comment Richard

Richard Smith perfectly said
I agree. By design, the band’s musical force pulls your attention away from the full understanding of lyrics.
No words, great explication Richard. God bless you
I have NEVER not cried when I have listened to this song.
upstairs|into the fire
I get choked up
always...
20 years on from 9/11. Thank you Bruce ❤️🇺🇸
Patty just slays the start...then Bruce and the E Street Band...take it to heaven
more than heaven , i would say
The final chorus is a prayer that resonates today in the midst of the turmoil and division we are experiencing. If faith and hope could give everyone the strength to shout less and listen more, perhaps that prayer could be answered.

One of the most powerful songs ever written.
yes agree! but he have other pearls :)

On the 20 th anniversary of 9/11 these words are an extraordinary tribute to those who went Into the Fire on that day
One of his most underrated songs

This is such a beautiful Springsteen song many people know nothing about. Remarkable.
Another year, and just as heartbreaking a song as the first time I heard it.
Forever The Boss.
The whole Rising album is fantastic, so great live, such an emotional tribute

Never forgotten and always missed publishers clearing House I'm ready for the prize this win it
This album is masterpiece.
Mere words cannot express the emotional power of this song, as is true of so many of Springsteen and the E Street Band's songs. Much respect to them all.
This song is still so powerful and even more relevant now. It still brings goosebumps to me and often tears when I think back to that tragic day.
Patti is transcendent on this, very evocative, carries our grief out into the open. That is the power of music right there, the shared emotional experience.
Such a special performance! This album still carries so much meaning for those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to their loving families. True poetry!
I am in awe of the greatest band to ever perform.
Extraordinary lyric but of influences of the Middle East. Springsteen is international !
