    i am a self taught beginning violinist. I play everything by ear. I have watched countless videos on vibrato and your video is the only one that made sense to me. You made it so easy to understand that it wasn't frustrating to attempt like in all the videos I previously watched. I now am working on my vibrato again and am making so much more progress. Thank you for your instruction! The video was very clear in explanation and was very helpful!!

      Also,
      I have a quick question:
      Should the side of my hand be touching the side of the neck, or is that a bad habit to keep for vibrato? Is it okay to touch the neck of the violin when I'm playing without doing vibrato?

    You are a good teacher. I'm a self learner. Don't know sheet music. I play only by ear. I've seen many tutorial but not so simple and easy to learn. I just started working out. Wow its working. I will share this with my friends too. Thank you very much. May God bless you abundantly.

    This is what I was looking for. This is the best explanation ever of how to learn vibrato from scratch!. I've seen other videos about vibrato, but nobody gave me a step by step explanation of how to learn vibrato properly. Nobody mentioned about the thumb off, which is very important for a beginner. You're the best, Thank you!!

    Thanks a lot for your video! Now I can finally vibrate properly with violin... "unfortunately" you're right.. all other videos aren't teaching the right way, I've tried them all and only with yours I could do it! The others try to teach you the vibrato moving your wrist o going back and forth with the finger tip from the side, but the truth is all in your arm! :D Thanks a lot, i was about to quit violin for this reason, even my teacher couldn't teach it to me properly... thanks again!

    I like how you emphasized taking time. When I first began violin, I over practiced. I was making my third finger move from high to low placement when already fatigued. I felt a tearing pain all the way to my elbow. Not fun. 3 months with special hand exercises to recover. It's so important to give muscles time to adapt!

    I did violin for years in school. Got to Trinity college exams grade 7, if that means anything to you. Then I didn't play for 10+ years. I'm now taking it up again. I was never satisfied with my vibrato before. I don't remember someone teaching it to me. It just kind of happened.. Looking in the mirror, it seems I do extend my finger, but my vibrato is from the wrist. Your vibrato is much nicer. So I'm trying to relearn it with this method. Thank you for your great videos.

    Hi, thank you for the vibrato video! I'm a beginner, but I would like to also mention that this is the arm vibrato motion. There's also the wrist vibrato motion, and both are actually correct. But yeah bending at the knuckle is good, I'm working on that right now :)

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  8 лет назад +2

      You are most welcome. I kind of disagree with you but that's not a problem. As long as you love making music that's what I care about.
      Basically, wrist vibrato has more of a wobble sound rather that a regular oscillation like a singing voice. Thank you for your comments !

    Nice tutorial. I can do about 10 per bow stroke. How many should I aim to be able to do for each bow stroke? Also, what exercises do you recommend for developing vibrato one you vibrate competently? Scales? Simple songs? Thanks.

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 года назад

      The correct number of vibrato oscillations per bow would be different for each violinists depending on the progress. If you can do healthy 10 oscillations per bow, this means your vibrato is settling well. Regarding developing vibrato, you could use a simple piece and try to vibrate on long notes. I'll try to make a video about it. Happy practising!

    Ms.Joy, I have been doing a vibrato of my own I think, I'm not sure if it's right or wrong, but I'm going to try what you told us to try and see if it works. It's kinda hard to flex the joint of where my hand meets my wrist when it has so much tension... I'm trying hard and all the the other videos are hard to understand... I really hope this works and thank you for this video, you are a great teacher, a nice one too and please pray for me that I will finally learn how to do REAL vibrato before coming winter in 2018.
    -Thank you:)

    Dear Miss Joy,
    a help is needed here, I'm just started to learn vibrato,
    1. Is it normal to touch others strings when my finger is flatten?
    2. My hand keep moving toward the peg when I doing the flatten - come back - flatten - come back motion, i need to use force and press on the note, then release the force when i flatten ?
    Your reply will be appreciated. Thank you.
    Best Regards,

      Miowmio I'm no expert and I don't know the answer to the first. Mine does but I think its the size of your fingers.
      As for 2 that might be tention somewhere in your hand. But more likely is yoy havent developed muscle memory yet. You need that to vibrate!

      I think gradually as you practise more, your finger wont be as flattened and touch other string:)

      Hi Kovo, if you are new to vibrato, a couple times on each finger will be sufficient. So that your hand/ fingers stay nice and relaxed to collect healthy habits.
