- Come along as I remove and install some new ball joints on the old 1974 VW Bus!
I show how I use a press kit, which I decided to just buy at about 200 bucks. Not a lot of tools outside what any normal shade tree mech has.
Watch me struggle, learn, and feel like you have come along to visit, sit and stretch your legs, chat and hang.
Great video. Thank you
with the accordion music, i almost expect something comedic to happen like a silent movie of the 20s. Thanks for showing this. i'll have to do this on my own bus someday.
Hahhaaha, yup its a blast to play with the music, to setup a fun bit or reflect whats going on, thanks!
Thank you brother and continue to spoil our beautiful T2 bus!
dreading this job, but better for me to have a go at it then pay $600 for someone else to practice on my van
Thank You so much for posting these!
Yup felt the same way, 600+ bucks...heck ya ill do it myself. hehe, more power to ya man!!!
Thank you for these videos, very helpful!!
Hails Greg! Thanks man, hopefully I make some mistakes that others can avoid!
Happy motoring man!

Loved this video. Thank you.
Thank you! thanks for dropping by!
very good bishops grettings from Oaxaca México.
Greetings Mexico!! Thank you so much, you are too kind!
Great video…I’m going to be doing this on my project soon
Hey thank you very good I can do mine now. Keep on wrenching.
Nice video. Thank you)
Thank you for posting this series. I have the same job to do on our '78. Unfortunately, no one has touched the suspension since the bus was new.
Oh man, ya lots of PB Blaster and an extra large swear jar will help. Best of luck, let me know how it goes!
@@bishopofrustyiron3101 Yeah, busted my Ball Joint removal tool....need to remove the Torsion Arms to get the ball joints out.....whoopee! I need an adult beverage.
@@bishopofrustyiron3101 Ended up pulling the Torsion Arms and taking them to a shop. They were the OG Ball Joints and even they had a hell of a time getting them out. All's good now.
@@jaysummers5484 oh man! Ya they are an amazingly tough part to get a-part, ugg! Good luck on the rig!
With its accessories to see if I can get it here in my city, greetings from Guadalajara Jalisco Mexico, greetings and hugs !!!
Greetings Oscar! Hope you can find the tool there! Ball-joint press kit:

07:25 The front axle beam is not a jacking point. FYI.
Noted, ty!
I can tell you that I tried doing exact the same procedure on my VW with the same tools, even put heat to it. Damn ball joints were stuck in there. Had to get it out using a press.
Yup, a complete pain in the butt! A labor of love for my kiddo =)
@@bishopofrustyiron3101 I applied so much pressure to that ball joint that even the C clamp was bent. Used a big 22mm socket with a 4 foot extension on it.
@@brucewayne2773 Wow, ya its amazing how stuck these can be...4ft extension, that is some grunt!
@@bishopofrustyiron3101 I was envious you were able to remove yours with an adjustable wrench by hand.
Great video, did you have to go get the from end aligned after you put it all back together?
I went to Les Schwab for the alignment, they were familiar with the odd setup of the bus to align the wheels...a rather senior man came out to do the work :)
How are these holding up?
How can you be sure that tool is as good as using a 20 ton press which is what the manual indicates?
Ball joint coming loose on the highway would not be a nice scenario...
Thank you!
ive got about 35,000 miles on the bus now without any issues =)
@@bishopofrustyiron3101 thank you for your quick response! I will use this tool then, to avoid having to remove the trailing arms
@@onehappykombi Awesome, good luck! Sounds like a good project.
Yeah!!!!
Agree re less music/volume. Is there a special name for the clamp you have? Did you have to modify the holding surface to fit the slots?
Would you Recommend to Tack Weld the tops of the BJ's for extra insurance ? I had one pop out last week that a local shop had just installed. I am going to re install myself the way you did it here. Thx
Interesting...as long as the weld is just a quick zippo that you can grind off later....weird it popped out...i do know that the hispanic made busses are just a gnats hair wider than the original german ones, so the BJ are not interchangeable.i would imagine if you used a set of stock german ones on a mexi bus, you'd have that pop-out chance.
@@bishopofrustyiron3101 I just got done with my BJ replacement. I have a 1975 mexican made bus. Had a hard time using your method with the clamp and the rental BJ tool. I did not want to break the rental so I went for plan B. I took the torsion arms out and grinded the BJ lips off. Then proceeded to use the BJ tool without the clamp and I succeeded at pressing them out. The german Meyle ball joints are a hair larger than the hole where they have to go in to. No way they went in as smooth as yours did. I had to use a 20 ton press to press them in all the way. But I got er done!
@@rayaguirre4237 oh man what an adventure there ray! Glad in the end you got it done...ya no magic when I did it, could have been some luck on my side? wow 20ton, that should never come out!
Happy motoring!
How did you get the old joints removed?
Episode 28: ruclips.net/video/kSsWwA7jyn8/видео.html
Thanks Bishop, good work! Gives me the confidence to give this a go on my 78'. So, how did you make the adjustment on the camber nut? Did you just reinstall the same way it came out? How do you know when it's correct?
Yup i put it back where i found it, any descent VW shop, when you take it there for an alignment, will loose it and move it to the proper camber. I guessed, and to me its working fine! No weird tire wearing or steering effects I can tell.
Bishops very good video of changing suspension ball joints, I change them by giving the whole arm and taking it to a hydraulic press, a question Bishops Co is called the tool what did you use?
Hails Oscar!
I used a ball-joint press kit. It was $300 from Amazon, and can be used on a 100 vehicles of all sizes and shapes.
I've used it about 4 times now, that made it worth the investment.
Really hard job!
How do you remove the ball joint
With the tool I show, you press it out by slowly using a wrench on the black part of the clamp. The video shows how, with careful turning, it will slowly press out.
Thank you 😊
Did that tool also take out the ball joints?
Yes, it took them off as well, kinda a jenga puzzle of figuring out which adapters go where. But yes, it did it all.
I paid $150 to get my ball joints pressed in. Where did you get the tool? I am about to do another bus and it would be nice to have it.
Hails! I picked it up on Amazon for about $150....i've used it three times now, 3 cars so 6 times....in a way that made the investment worth it.
Its labor though but rewarding when it comes together because of your own hands.
@@bishopofrustyiron3101 do you have a part number for the tool?
@@buildem336 search amazon for "Orion Motor Tech Master Ball Joint Press Kit"
Its in a red plastic case, and costs 88.99 =)
Pays for itself the first time =)
@@bishopofrustyiron3101 Thanks for the info
nice video however im hard of hearing therefore the music i could have done without when you were talking as the music was playing it was hard to understand however when the music stopped it was great but thanks for helping
Good to note thank you, I will work on that balance a bit, I do have a new Mic so i'm hoping that will help. Thanks for dropping bye!
Thanks! No music go forward - we want to hear what you have to say. Speed up the parts your not talking with music. Just a suggestion mate
I like that thanks! Cursing and all hehehe. Cheers!
I thought I would like your channel because I am working on my ‘75 bus… the music is SO distracting that you lost me. It would be much better if you stuck to the work at hand and took the candy out. I really am interested in what you are doing….
Too much music over riding cannot hear you speak don't need the music
