1957 Gard'n Mast'r Tractor, Parked for Decades!

  • This tractor is a 1957 Gard'n Mast'r built by Garden All, powered by a Briggs and Stratton series 23 9hp engine (made in December of 1956). My Dad bought it in the early 60's and used it to help build the family home, and plowed the driveway with it for many years. I used it in the '80's for tractor pulling in the 4-H club, with my heaviest pull dragging 5400 lbs on a skid. My Dad used it a bit in the 90's, and then its pretty much been sitting ever since. In this video I evict the mice that have been living in it, and try to get it running again.
One note, the rear tire I bought says Agstar 8-16 on the side, but it was called Ag-Dura 1630 on the listing where I bought it with no mention of the Agstar name.

Back in 1957, John Deere Green was a darker shade than what they use today. The old color is now known as Classic Green and will match the original color much better.

After buying a garden tractor for the first time about 2 years ago, I'll never be without one again. They are so maneuverable and can fit into the tiniest spaces and down the smallest paths, and yet can haul and pull so much more than a person. They can tow small utility trailers, pull dead vehicles, and there are lots of attachments for them if you want to use them for gardening/yard maintenance. It's amazing what they can pull after being outfitted with a set of ag tires and wheel weights.

I resurrected a 1957 Simplicity walk behind with a model 19D Briggs that sat near 40 years in a shed that was my in laws. Freed a stuck intake valve, dug out mouse nest, got it running with a washer fluid jug for a temporary gas tank, until I can get the rust out of the main tank. I too have a "home place" I grew up at where I keep un earthing treasures from my youth. Bent snowmobile skis, rusty bike frames! Ahhh the memories!

Hi James, Thank you for taking the time to make a video. You always have very cool things going on and this is no exception. OH, and that humor! It's priceless. I would like to tell you when I was about 13 (1965) a buddy of mine got about a 1959 or so, Economy brand small tractor that looked a lot like yours. I believe it was called a Jim Dandy and it was all factory original. He got it from a very popular lawnmower/ outdoor equipment place a major highway just 15 miles North of downtown Detroit, Michigan where he worked with his Dad. Someone traded it in for a newer tractor and my buddy brought it home. It had ribbed tires on the front and a 9hp cast iron Briggs & Stratton. It had a "car like" clutch and bellhousing and a tiny 3 speed transmission and a driveshaft that went back to a "car like" rear axle with tractor tires. in the back My buddy put a starter-generator on it, battery and lights to upgrade it. We never used it for anything except pulling a trailer around for utility work or just with us kids in it. It was pristine and worked great. I hope you will make yours "like new" again maybe, just for nostalgia. Fine Business Mr. ben/ michigan

the tire iron set for a D40 Nissan Frontier ('05-'21) includes a t-handle design where it is used to turn the spare tire support crank and the jack crank. It has a 3/8" male square end on it and is around a foot long. I suspect that other vehicles from manufacturers that used the same jack or spare tire support winch mechanism would be similar and would fit in the tractor without being too big to come out like the T-handle.

We bought my mom a riding mower back in the early 00"s but she kept hitting the timbers that edged the driveway and knocking the tire off the rims. My 1st fix was to put in tubes. But mom was determined to ride the edge of those timbers. So I scoured the local hardware stores and found solid rubber wheelbarrow tires that would fit the axles on her mower. Mom was happy and I didn't have to re-seat tires every 2 weeks. Problem solved.
