Probably worth mentioning looking where you want go as a real basic pre-cursor to all of these tips too. I found myself looking down rather than down the line too often. When I was told about that and corrected it, my take offs improved really quickly.
My surfing got much worse in last few months ever since winter waves at ocean beach sf got bigger, faster and heavier. After watching this video, I realized I've been making some mistakes that are pointed out here. Thank you.
This was one of the most helpful videos I've seen on surfing. Thanks for making this video!
Well narrated and explained. Good visuals to illustrate the points.
That was so so so helpful. Thanks!
This is a weird RUclips crossover I wan't expecting. I watch your piano tutorials! Thanks for all the help :)
i love your videos....my girls started to competing this year and these videos are helping us a lot...thank you sooooooo much
Thank you for this video. It's exactly what I needed to see to move on!
Well done! Gonna practice that tomorrow!
Really helpful, well narrated and good images. Thank you. TG

great video ... .long overdue
just what I was looking for
thanks that was really helpful explanation!

The quick snap up makes it or if you're too slow breaks it .....As a kid surfing crowded HB you'd get clobbered being a shoulder hopping kook.....but while paddling back out and someone fell off that wave the turn and burn with a quik snap up in crucial part of the wave will get you more rides.......I cut my teeth there and it made a big difference in my surfing over the years.....I'm an Ol Waver now but still at it..
Thank you so much
how about getting up on steap and fast waves
Thank you. Great information to transition to intermediate level
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome video, i just downsized from a long board to a short board and I noticed my pop up is terrible and slow. I pop off my right knee and sometimes use the chicken leg method but notice that the wave is often already done by the time I get down the face and try to turn. I'm going to put this into practice.
Thanks Louis, we have lots more tips on pop ups and taking off in our latest volume of 110% Surfing Techniques - vimeo.com/ondemand/surfingtechniquesvolume4/
These are some of the biggest waves ever surfed. Gnarly
Any tip how to go along the wave not just straight
Thanks
It's like the GPS lady learned to surf.
many times I don't know if in a big tubing wave is better to go in the line or do a deep bottom turn.
+saintseiyaliveaction it depends on what the section is doing. if its predominantly pitching really hard really fast you're generally going to want to set your rail really early and try to slide in but if you shoulder it more or have to wait for the section to catch up to you or hit the right part of the bottom to pitch then a deeper bottom turn usually combo'd with a snap just in front of the section to stall you out if its slow and you want to try to fit yourself in it or if its fast but your out in front of it take the wide bottom turn then hit the gas and match pace with it so it starts to peel over you but you don't get caught behind. watch the pros at places like pipe, france, and portugal. watch how they adjust to the different waves. the cool thing about pipe is you have backdoor and pipe and a lot of goofy footers are testing backdoor which is the faster type barrel so you can see how they adjust to the on their backhand, the regular footers you can see how they handle it, and at pipe you usually see the reverse where the wider bottom turn comes into play more. watching contests helped my surfing a lot. you get to see the nuances of the drop in they cut from video parts. I'm trying to work on the under the lip frontside barrel right now but it happens like once in a blue moon in nj so its not exactly easy to practice hahaha
justin the mole thanks, you know i'm a surfer from many years, i have sponsors, i do contests, etc... but, i rarely surf wave like this in italy. so my problem in the big waves is the take off. i don't know many times what to do, if bottom turn or have a high line..
Have any tips on how not to be a creaky, slow and stiff old geezer?
kineticsurf eat less carbs, keep calorie intake under 2000 a day.
Don't surf in cold water
Get some cardio in both steady and interval work with active recovery.
Eat well from ALL food sources (carbs are important).
Improve your overall flexibility and strength and most all be consistent!
Hey any videos out there on how to get off a bigger wave? How to kick out or how to straighten out? Thanks for the help.
Hi Patrick, thanks for your feedback, I am going to cover more about surfing in bigger waves in 110% Surfing Techniques Volume 4.
110% SurfingTechniques. Instructional Surf DVDs & Digital Downloads.
Great! I will be especially interesed in ways to kick out of barrels and after straightening out on close outs!! Mahalo!
When you get past 40 it's helps to carry a stick to push off the deck to get u up faster
what a wipe out at 3:15 xD awesome
haha! I can't say I have ever had my board fly up and smack me in the face as it flips over my head from a failed drop in.
yes dude, my words! have had strong offshore ;) had to watch this scene 10 times, so good!
Nothing wrong at all with back foot coming down first.
Yep I agree, that's normal for the back foot to land first. Sometimes peoples takes-off have too long of a delay getting the front foot into position so the board gets hung up.
I hate close outs so much . I don’t know why but so many waves here in oc are all these giant slow rollers . You have to drop in nearly upside down . Or your going up and over . I’ve been on many over head sets in my life . But these slow rollers drive me fckin crazy . They just build so slowly it’s so hard to get on them . Any advice ???
Primary overhead sets I’ve been on were in Santa Barbara when it’s good
Hi William, thanks for your comment, have a look at this video from volume 4: vimeo.com/ondemand/surfingtechniquesvolume4/204668750?autoplay=1
All the best - Martin
"Grabbing a rail also helps". You mean I'm not Kelly Slater?
you also might want to mention that you need to be under 15 percent body fat to do any recommended procedures in your article.... If Im wrong, let's see one of your bigger surfers demonstrating.... thanks for the tips.
