3 years ago I had maybe 7 bags. Now I’m up to 52 and it feels a bit overwhelming. Of course I love something about each of them, but realistically it’s hard to rotate through them all. They usually end up sitting on the shelf, then I feel guilty and like a hoarder. That doesn’t stop me from buying more though. That’s when I call myself a collector. It’s a thin line for me. 😂 Loved this topic! ❤
Hey Tiffany! Haha, it sounds like we're in the same boat! My shopping really took off during the pandemic, and I accumulated so much! After a while, I had way too many bags than I knew what to do with!
In my 20s, definitely a collector. I used to hunt for specific designers. I’ve been very lucky to have had some incredible pieces pass through my wardrobe, even fulfilled a dream of gifting a piece to a museum. As I’ve gotten older, life/priorities evolve. Now I’m an editor. While, I will always enjoy shopping and consuming style content, I’m more realistic about my life. I have no problem trimming what no longer serves me. I often think of something Elizabeth Taylor said , “Having Jewelry Is A Temporary Gift We ‘owners’ Are Just The Caretakers…Nobody Ever Owns Anything This Beautiful. We Are Only The Guardians.” I have Purse Peace. I’ve “been there, done that” with Chanel. Moving away from Rick Owens, I buy the classics and which I now have-in multiples even! The piece de resistance for my Tom Ford era collection is seeing him with my own eyes. Also, I’ve worked in luxury retail for years so I’ve seen it all…6 figure diamonds, Himalayan birkins, I don’t notice it anymore. I'm at a stage where I want to create memories and live my life in my collection.
Hi Pretaporterp! I think I'm evolving into the same boat a bit too- just being realistic with what works best for me. And you're absolutely right with the Elizabeth Taylor quote. I kind of take that approach with anything of value in my life- bags and clothes- furniture and fine decor. And I also want to create memories rather than just accumulate more stuff.
I came to this conclusion about 6 months ago ago I took my bags out and organized by color and realized I had 40 black bags 45 tan bags and so on and so on. So now I have culled my collection and have cut out a lot of my duplicate styles in same colors so anyway I’ve gone from 236 bags to 110 and I’m comfortable with that #. Now I only buy bags if it feels a need I don’t have or different colors that I don’t currently have. My only problem is I love love love 👜 ugh. 💚 the video
Hey BirkinBoy!! Yeah, it felt so good to let the bags I wasn't using go. It was such a breath of fresh air to have the space and not feel overwhelmed by all the options. But at the end of the day- we just love bags! haha!!
This is such a great topic that I think can go beyond handbags! My approach has changed from basically having a “shrine.” The most important thing for me is use. You have to use and enjoy your things and not keep them tucked away for “some day” or out of fear that your item will get worn or dirty. Exactly! Take the tags off and love it and use it! Don’t keep it hidden away.
Thank you, Bridget! Yes! The Shrine! I know that all too well. And it's so important to only buy bags that actually serve us rather than us serving them.
My collection is insane lol. When I hit about 30, I started buying bags for purpose. Things that I thought I would love in 10 years. That approach has served me well. My wardrobe is pretty minimal so my handbags, shoes, and scarves are the personality of my outfits. I like really unique colorways and structure. I do go on droughts because there are times where the bags from everyone are just boring. But i can't shake the bag love. I have been that way since I was 16❤❤❤
Hey Heart Break! I'm in the same boat- I will also love buying new bags. And I like your approach toward buying for the purpose and the long term. That's a really smart idea!
I have 20 LV bags, 2 Alexander McQueen, 1 Ted Baker of London. I do rotate and carry them all even though the LV is a collection of Murakami. I have 5 more Murakami I want and then I’m hoping to call it purse peace for a while. Trust me I admire loads of brands but I have collector tendencies so I do my best to not go there, it’s easy to go down the rabbit hole, for myself 😂 I went a bit nuts on the Murakami slg’s and had a realization moment so I sold a bunch and kept only what I needed, did the same with Alexander McQueen handbags and slg’s, now I’m keeping myself on track. It’s not fun losing money when you go to resell, they are not investments like they were. 🤞😉😍
I say it all the time, but your Murakami collection is gorgeous!! And I know exactly what you mean by collector tendencies- I think we all suffer from that around here haha! But sadly, you're also right about not fun losing the money after the sale- bags don't keep the same investment like they used too.
This is a good question anyone that collects needs to ask themselves. With my video games I feel that I’m a collector, but I can see how it could get out of hand 😂
A hoarder can't throw things away. Or sell stuff. A collector curates, but can cull the herd when necessary. I'm a collector. I collect bags. But I have no problem selling them. I usually get the urge to purge every so often. I want to be more like you Caleb and purchase less. Be more thoughtful about the bags I'm buying. I see something I love, so I buy it. But then I realize it doesn't really work with my style. And even worse, the more you have, the harder you have to work to wear it all!
Hey Ronnie! I think I fall into the collector category too, and I'm working on just buying what I'll love for a lifetime rather than what I like right now. It's easier said than done- I still struggle with online browsing daily- but that's the collector in me haha!
@CalebSnell yes the browsing. I can't help myself. Sometimes, you just want to see what's out there, and then something pops up at a great price. I had to quit looking at ShopGoodwill and Poshmark. Way too tempting.
I have: 2 evening bags, 1 designer bag, 1 mini backpack, 2 mini everyday bags, 4 medium size everyday bags, 1 big everyday bag, 1 study bag, 1 bag for PC and/or documents, 1 bag for rainy weather, 1 winter bag. Total: 15 bags. To organise and manage bags it is always easier to separate them according to functions.
I have more than ten bags, although I admit I don’t have a specific count. I gauge based on how much space I have to store them in. When I run out of space, I know I need to sell or gift bags as part of a clear-out. That seems to work for me. I enjoy having a wide variety of different styles, colors, and brands in my collection so I could never be a minimalist or even just a “ten bags only” kind of person. It’s a thrill to have the perfect bag to go with my daily outfits! ❤
You make so many great points with this comment! And maybe I should approach it the same way- as long as I have the space, then be okay with it. Good idea!
Exactly! And thank you! Everyone has a different situation so you have to come up with your own assessment marker, so to speak. Love your videos! This was a great topic! ❤
Caleb this is a good question😊. I think the difference is with hoarding they go into super dept. now collectors are different cause you sale some of your bags. I think your thinking is perfect . My bag count is a lot. I am scared to go look in my closets.
Well the hoarding vs collecting is something each person will have to answer in their hearts based on their core values and why is it they buy bags, really. It isnt always to fill the void of another bag. i like bags and i have more than I need to carry things from one place to another, so historically most groups would consider me a hoarder. But in modern society we think a tad differently about goods and consumption.😉 But the variety of bags do brighten my day so pretty and cheerful.😊 I feel trying out a more affordable or filller bag with the same type of silouette of a luxury bag is helpful in finding out the few styles and items you love. Many times i was so excited about a bag style, got it and after a few weeks realized it was hard to use or style and wasn't for me. Then i was soooooo glad I bought the silouette from a more affordable designer and gave that bag a test run. We're human sometimes we have to try things out to find the answer. That's part of learning. It's what we do after we know, that makes the difference.
That's a really good point of buying a contemporary version of a luxury bag to try it out. And there's nothing worse than getting a bag and realizing it's not for you after a short period of time. Thank you for watching!
I think also especially in the US, we're used to much larger living spaces than lots of other parts of the world. I moved to a tiny studio (like 250 sqft) just over a year ago. It's been challenging, but it forces me to be decisive about what I keep. I constantly feel like I'm in a place of needing to get rid of more stuff because it piles up very very quickly. When I had a much larger 1br apartment, I just filled it with stuff I never used but hoped I would someday. I think any kind of collection can go down that route if you're not careful. There's a difference between collecting pieces you love and collecting just to collect. Also capitalism wants us to believe that we have to own something to appreciate it, which isn't true.
That's such a great point, Carrie. Humans are a lot like Goldfish- we'll grow to the size of our bowl- or at least our material goods will. And you make such a great point about collecting only what you love, and also about capitalism. I hope you're having a great week!
These are good questions. For me I did have 26 handbags and I just recently reduced down to 17. My ideal collection size would be 13 or less. 26 handbags for me feels very overwhelming, 17 feels very overwhelming. Safe space- There are some youtubers with very large collections that I can not watch because I find it disturbing the amount that they have while at the same time saying they have a problem while doing another unboxing. I was on vacation I didn't have access to youtube and it was refreshing not watching handbag videos because they do influence me to want to shop. BTW I am not a minimalist either I just like to use what I have since currently I SAH.
Thank you, Pinkbear! It feels refreshing to edit a large collection down, I walked into my closet after the second sale and took a big deep breath and exhale. I think too many bags quickly get overwhelming, and I was heading that way at an alarming rate. I'm really enjoying my slower approach to collecting.
Oh, asking the sensitive questions! I don't really consider myself either. Being a 'collector' sounds more purpose-driven than my group of bags is, and I hope I'm not a hoarder! I have a smallish closet, and I don't intend to expand beyond it for either bags or clothes. Everything has to fit in there. That means I have about 13 bags and have room for at most one more full size bag, lol. I also don't have any clothes with the tags still on, just not something I believe in for myself. At most, I'll buy something off season and leave the tags on until the season changes and I can wear it, but don't like the idea of so many clothes I can't even wear them. Nor, so many bags I can't even carry them. Also I don't see myself longing for a particular bag for years and, if I get it, keeping forever. Just like clothes for me, they come into my life for a season, probably 2-10 years. Having a forever piece is not really a thing to me.
Haha asking the tough questions today! It sounds like you have a really solid approach to how you acquire new pieces for your wardrobe. And that's really cool! I'm working at being better and only buying what I need!
I collect things i am attracted to, not necessarily any rime or reason just things i love, and want to keep for whatever reason. I love my collections and would never do anything differently
Oh no I'm a hoarder I collect Dooney and Bourke and coach and Michael kors and I have about 125 bags way too many I'm definitely a hoarder. Thanks for this information this was very interesting and eye opening. Have a great night 👜👜👜💗
I have more than 10 bags as a whole, but I am a collector. I LOOOOOOOOOVVEEEEEEEEE the LV Multicolore print, but I don’t own every shape of bag or item with that because I don’t like some shapes or need them. I have 4 Pochette Accessoires, but they’re all from different key collections.
I'm right there with you, Samantha! I loooove Multicolore too. But I'm also honest with myself and only buy pieces that I know will work or that I know I'll love. Sadly, much of that collection doesn't work with my frame.
I have around 40 bags - too many for me. I buy, then consign or donate in an attempt to keep it around 30. During the pandemic Dooney had crazy good sales. Now most of my collection is Dooney Florentine. In addition, I have a small Frye drawstring bag, a medium Frye Melissa satchel, & 2 Portland Leather bags. For me it's totally about the leather, preferably full grain, smooth. Smooshy, sensual leather. ❤🌻
Hi Linda! I know what you mean- it felt like everyone had great deals and sales at that time, and it was hard for me not to get carried away. I agree- it's always the leather that ends up getting me!
After seeing this, I went to my closet and counted - 34 bags! This was kinda happy news for me. Up until this year, I had coming and going about 80-90 bags, mostly contemporary like Coach. Then I dipped into some LV and Miu Miu and found Dooney. I gradually switched from ooh that's a great bag, I should have it, to keeping the bags I really loved to use. Then there was a good deal of buying and selling to find bags I loved that filled a specific purpose.I sold off all Coach except a couple vintage ones I reconditioned and my 2 Rogues, I only kept one LV, just a couple Dooney, a number of Miu Miu and 3 Bayswaters. I got a bit ruthless so that if I never ever used a bag, I sold it. Or, if I went out with a bag and didn't really enjoy it, sold it. If I think about buying another bag, I consider if I already have one that fulfills that niche. This is not as utilitarian as it sounds. I do have a couple bags I love that are occasional use. But, I now look at my collection and feel good about each one, I enjoy them more, and the number of bags respects my space (and finances). It's definitely a journey.
You're so right, it's definitely a journey! But it sounds like you have a really smart and methodical approach toward collecting to make sure it doesn't get out of control. And that's half the battle! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
This is a really good topic/conversation because not only does it apply to handbags 👜 it can be anything shoes/candles(guilty 😂). For me as I got older I understood what type of bags I enjoyed to carry and what I would rather invest in and that’s Classic/ Vintage pieces and if I want something trendy and fun I don’t have to invest a lot of coins in it cause RUclips handbag collection videos will have you spending your child tuition 😂😂My whole goal with buying a handbag is not for me to sale it. It’s for me to enjoy it through any season, not have rules about it, and know it speaks to my personal style.
Hi Nikki! That's so true that this could apply to almost anything! And I agree, I want to pivot to more classic/vintage pieces as well. And i think you're right- handbags should be for enjoying, not just selling down the road.
I’m 38… I’ve been collecting since I was 17 and got my first job… I’m very selective and have always been. But I’ve also evolved, my style has changed and no doubt will continue to so… that said I have 70 bags.. and I’m happy and comfortable with them. I have a folder in my phone with pics of all my bags and with various outfits, so I know exactly what I have and don’t forget. My guilty pleasure is looking at that album lol
OMG, Lutifah- I love that idea! That makes so much sense to keep an album of the bags on your phone. And I'd be the same way, just constantly scrolling the album! haha!
Awesome topic! My collection is what I'd call curated. Have about 20ish, perhaps 5 I haven't worn in years. I'm on a pause because the next few bags I want require significant saving (USD $7k minimum). I'd love a B/K and some Chanel's from Karl's era so I just have to be patient. Glad I listened to vloggers like you which is why my SLG collection is like 3-4 items. I haven't gotten one in years because how many SLGs does one need??? Thanks Caleb.
I put the breaks on my bag buying when I retired last year. I’ve added 2 Cole Haan bags, very inexpensive but very nice quality. I just purchased 2 peekaboos from FP and Yoogi’s, thanks to you Caleb 😀. One is a gorgeous Selleria. I recently counted my bags, all total 30. I have a few that I will never use, work totes etc. I just can’t be bothered trying to sell them. I hate selling! I’ve never considered myself a hoarder but not really a collector either. I’ve just been a bag lover since age 5ish. I might and want to buy a bag when I’m in Hawaii next year, we’ll see. If I did offload what I no longer use I’d have about 20 left. That’s a good number for me. I’ve been trying to rotate often, sometimes 3 times a week. I do love matching my bag to my outfit. The only bag I’ve ever wanted but never owned is a Birkin. I don’t think I’ll ever have one but I sure enjoy seeing others Bs. Speaking of Birkin, I want to see a full tour of yours and your thoughts after having it for a few weeks. It’s a beauty! I sure enjoy your videos and your thoughts on bags, etc.
Hi Janet! I hope you're loving your Peekaboos! And I'll be honest- Cole Haan makes very nice bags! Selling is so much work! I feel your pain lol! I'm also working at getting better at rotating, but I'll admit, it's easier said than done for me! I'm absolutely loving my Birkin, I got so lucky! Don't worry, there will be a full review and a B vs K video as well!
Love this concept!!! I’m personally such a minimal girl so my clothing/shoes/whatnot are all so super curated. Even though I try to do the same with my bag collection and preach creating the perfect capsule bag collection on my own channel, I completely agree with how difficult it is to pass up amazing bags and amazing deals! I’d LOVE to strive for a 20 piece curated bag collection one day full of incredible maybe even rare items, (it’s closer to 35 now 😅🤐). On the flip side I also allow myself this one category to have fun with, and keep the rest of my pieces extremely tight and rarely ever over purchase. I love the way you were able to get to this point on your own though, because as good and well as other people’s advice can be, it’s really up to how you evolve and it sounds like your entire trajectory was really wonderful. Even though you may have sold some pieces, you’ve also owned some gems and learned a lot about your style along the way 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you, Lela! And that's a really good way to approach your collecting. And I agree, you kind of have to figure out what works best for you along the way, and I'm so glad I had a chance to do so! I hope you're having a great week!
So excited for this premier! I have a constant mental battle with myself about if I have gone overboard or if I'm just a collector. Can't wait to hear what you have to say on the topic!
My issue with acquiring too many bags stems from my love of the hunt and my love of opening that package when it arrives. If I could find a different activity that replaces the joy I get from those two activities I am sure I would have fewer handbags crowding my guest bedroom. Any suggestions?
That's a really good point, Digital! And I'm the same way- nothing is more fun than the hunt and finding a good deal! I wish I could help with suggestions though- I still haven't found and ideal replacement either haha!
Going to the movies, I find the moment when the light dims so satisfying. And I like that my bag gets it own seat next to me lol! Now whether or not there's a movie worth seeing is another story.
While my kids would probably call me a hoarder 😂 I call it collecting. I’ve sold and given away bags, and I’ve cut back on the number of bags I’m buying, but do I have what many would consider too many, probably. Unless they were true bag lovers that is. But it makes me happy, I’m paying my bills and saving some $$ too, so I have no guilt. I don’t have an exact count, but I’m pretty certain I’m under 100 but probably over 50 total. Interesting topic❤️
Hey Sandy! Haha- don't let your kids pick on you! 😂 And you're right- for us true handbag lovers, collecting can mean something totally different. And as long as it makes you happy- that's all that matters!
The spending shift is real and I’m with you when it comes to filler pieces and not. I’ve learned over the last year that I’m now saving and buying the item I want (at an expensive price) instead of filler items that were on sale, at an outlet, that I only got cause of the deal. Big shift but it’s felt impactful
That's huge, Paul! That's such a great way to approach shopping, and I'm working on perfecting that myself. I've just found that while I do enjoy the quick rush of buying a well-priced bag in the moment, that I quickly get over it, and never use it. And at the end of the day, that could have been a couple hundred bucks toward something I really want and will love!
I've asked myself this question multiple times these past couple of years Caleb! I sometimes love and adore my collection, other times i think it's fine and I'd like more, and at other times the thought of it makes me ill. Strange gammut of feelings. 🙄
Fantastic topic! For me, I’m sitting really good and happy between 20 and 30 bags. At this point all my bags are contemporary, but I’m going to allow myself in the future to of course fill that with luxury and contemporary and as far as hoarding goes, I think being labeled a hoarder is when you’re at a place when you cannot pay your bills and it’s hurting those that. Love you, and basically the bags are taking over your house so I’m a little bit more lenient on that
Thanks Julie! That's a really good point about hoarding and finances. And it sounds like you're in a really good place with your collection and I'm thinking of having one last purge myself- but time will tell!
Interesting topic! For me… I think I’ll always feel like I have too many bags! 😂 I think I have a little over 20 Hermes bags and 10 funky contemporary bags. I find it hard to not buy distraction bags and I have such a big Hermes Wishlist even though I already have too many bags but I try and create boundaries for myself so I don’t go too crazy. I also want to just wear the bags I already have more and stop looking to buy the next thing. The collecting or hoarding has to end one day I hope 😂
Hi Jessie!! I have to say, I loved your video about Coach, and I've been feeling the same way with my shopping lately. Sure, I could buy several Coach bags a month, or I could save that money and buy 1 truly amazing H ever 5 or 6 months. I was really happy to see your take on that topic. But you're right, it's still hard not to get tempted by the distraction bags. And I hate to break it to you- but I don't think we'll ever be done collecting haha!
@@CalebSnell haha I agree!!! We can’t help it! I find it hard to stick to a certain colour palette! I really want to collect a rainbow! I think style wise I am a little more “curated” in that sense.
I just got into handbags this year and I currently own 8 bags. I don't have a lot of storage space, and since I'm not someone who changes my bags frequently (I wear the same bag everyday for months then switch it up), it doesn't make sense for me to have 341 handbags. I'm aiming to have a collection of 10-12 bags: but I know it's going to be difficult for me not to exceed that amount, since even if I limit myself to 1 new handbag a year I'll hit that threshold relatively soon. Not to mention, I can think of at least 4 bags I want off the top of my head 😅 But even though I've purchased 6 bags this year alone, I would say that I've been more of an editor than a collector. I've put thought and research into most of my bag purchases: for example, earlier this year, I really wanted the Tory Burch Fleming, but after looking at videos of people who've had the bag for at least few months, I learned the bag scratches easily, which isn't great for me since I don't baby my handbags. I decided against buying it, and also passed on the Furla Metropolis Remix (I'd prefer a leather strap over a chain strap), the Coach Sammy in pink (wish it had brass hardware), and the Polene Un Nano (I wasn't in love with either size of this bag; I needed something in-between). The bags I added this year were the Coach Sammy in black (larger size), Polene Numero Neuf Mini in mauve, Coach Pillow Tabby 26 in black, Mulberry Mini Zipped Bayswater in Amethyst, Furla Diamante in violet & Tory Burch Ruched Kira in black.
Hi Crystal! It sounds like your collection is off to a great start! And I think it's smart that you're approaching it with such a sound plan. I'm limiting myself as well moving forward to no more than 2 or 3 bags (wish me luck!). I hope you're having a great weekend!
I haven’t read the article but the topic is interesting. At the end of the day, you gotta do what’s best for you. I have a lot of bags, but I use them. For me, I’ve always had the approach of 1 bag per quarter, IF there’s a bag I want. As far as the “filler bag” goes, I think it’s a great way to test a bag before committing to the big ticket bag. Great video! Thanks for sharing 😊
Caleb, all I can say to you is that I’m NOT talking to you anymore 😂!! I’m coming close to limit teetering on having crossed over. but that’s all I’m gonna say. Tfs 🛍️👛🙏🚢
Great video and topic! Mine was one of those heated comments🤣. However many bags we choose to have is our choice and no one has the right to judge. I do feel there is a lot of judgment going on lately in TPF with all these bag minimalists who like to point fingers and criticize if we have more then 10 bags 🙄. I love collecting bags and i have a very large collection, and it works for me. I would like to get down to 100 bags and i am working on that b/c it gets overwhelming, as u said. I see nothing wrong with multiples. I have 9 Speedys b/c i enjoy them, and at least 40 Veneta hobos in lots of colors and sizes and different treatments. Buffets exist b/c we all have different needs and tastes and appetites…..
Thank you so much!! Yes, the comments on that article were very polarized, so I thought it would be a great topic to dive into! I agree- I'd never judge someone for having 10 or 500 bags as long as it made the collector happy. I just know what's right for me, and I'm working towards my "perfect" collection (if that even is such a thing) haha! Thank you for watching!
It was a great idea to do a video on it, after that article came out! I am working toward curating the perfect collection too, would live to see future videos exploring how you go about it😁. And like you, I’ve started building my H collection too, so i won’t be able to overdo with those bags lol. Thanks again for the great video🩵
My collection isn’t huge. I have 3 designer bags- small, medium, and large. I like things to be very usable. There actually aren’t any designer bags that I’m excited about rn (though I would gladly take if they were gifted to me for free) and I’m more excited about mid range bags. I have 4 mid range bags on my wishlist… plus another LV wallet since the small size and compartments are unique and would be very convenient to me.
Hi Marina! I agree- bags that are useable are super important. And you're right- nothing new is really grabbing my attention either. Such a shame too! Haha! I hope you're having a great week!
I have about 80+ bags and it was like you said filler bags for the luxury bag I truly wanted or purchasing vintage bags that I was either to young or not financially able to afford at that time. But I can't find it in me to sell my bags nor do I use them all. I have specific ones I gravitate towards.
Hi Phil! I'm in the same boat- a lot of my bags are bags I couldn't afford in my early 20's. Some of those I use all the time- others, maybe once a year. It's a struggle!
Great topic and I don’t know which I am but I am a bag lover! 🤣 Plus having a RUclips channel tends to make us hoarders since it’s our content. Hmmm I make sure my shelves have room for more bags. Lol. Tfs Caleb 😊
Im 59 and started collecting and using Vuitton during Undergrad years witha few Gucci luggage pieces along the way. Post-Undergrad I did away with Gucci as the quality was far inferior to that of Vuitton. The Vuitton collection of Trunks, Runway pieces and limited editions was more my focus, and about 5years ago graduated to Hermes and have acquired a few Birkins, and Grooming Bags. I think, unless something really screams my name, I have done adding to the collection. I can honestly say that all bags reflect my Journey. I can tell you when, where, and what event is associated with each piece. So, I would say to some it looks like hoarding but to a bag aficionado like myself, Collector is more appropriate.
I really loved reading this comment. Your collection sounds beautiful and well-varied. And I think that's a great approach moving forward to only pick up something that screams your name. This will help in the long run to keep the collection from getting out of control.
I'm just under 50 and feel overwhelmed like you said. Now that I have a better idea of what bags I actually like and enjoy using, I'm realizing there are bags I bought early on that probably don't need to stay in my collection. I'm actually planning to re-home a few of them with family members who will actually enjoy using them and then I may begin selling others. It's such an intimidating process though!
This has been very thought-provoking. My collection of pink ceramic pigs in my kitchen is small and interesting, and definitely brings me joy. I've defined parameters for my handbags...they must be vintage and not be overwhelmed with logos...no logomania here. I would also consider "tasteful elegance" as another defining factor. That helps keep my handbags down to a manageable level. Other areas of my life...not so much, so I will be purging in those areas. This has really been good to get my head wrapped around.
Thank you, Joanna! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I think you have a really smart approach to your handbag collection. And I think that as long as your collections bring you joy- then that's all that matters!
I was at like 40 bags but it was a lot of contemporary and not what I actually want. I'm down to 25 bags and I think I'm going to pump the break's because I want to have more special bags instead of lots of not so special bags 😂
Everyone has a different way of approaching bag collecting. I cleared out my contemporary collection to make way for more luxury! It feels great to see shelves again! ❤❤❤
Thanks Melissa! The funny thing is- I filmed a 10 bags I can't live without tag earlier this year. The only thing I'd change is my Birkin instead of a City bag!
Yep that was me too. Recently sold the majority of my contemporary handbags, Chanel and LV. Down to three Chanel handbags. The love of my Hermes Evelyne, Kelly and Birkin has taken over. Next on my list, hopefully another Birkin but in heritage box leather 😊
I'm glad I'm not alone in that journey! I just get so much more joy out of a few big ticket bags over having a ton of bags. I'm hoping you can find your perfect Box Birkin!
I say collect what u want but try getting what you truly want not fillers. Also try just get one or two in styles. Totes, duffel, travel, crossbody, clutch, messenger.. I think this will help curbing the need to fill
Insightful video. I think it’s again up to personal perception as most things can be up to subjectivity but I can admit honestly my handbag collection is out of control from an outsider’s perspective but in my mind it isn’t. I counted and I have I think around 110, most being designer brands. I’m only 21 and I’ve done well for myself lmao we’ll say that and also I’ve acquired so much so fast because I’m in designer resale and have accumulated so much for stock. Much of which I end up keeping lol but I still sell a lot. But usually what I acquire to sell is going to be sold from the beginning so I don’t become attached to it. How I’m not attached mentally to those items but I am to the other hundred bags (and clothes as well as shoes but that’s a whole different game) is beyond my comprehension but I do sell a lot. To most it seems insane but in my mind most of them have a purpose? Even if the purpose isn’t every day. I mean you can’t even use that many every day to begin with so it is what it is. But maybe I’m delusional… Well I guess we all are in our own ways lol. It does peeve me when people say “You don’t need that many” because that’s very obvious but technically many things we don’t need. We don’t need the phone’s we’re creating this content and commenting on technically. So I think it’s all relative at the end of the day but sometimes my collection can overwhelm me, but my brain is very compartmentalized and I manage it, plus I’m moving soon and can store them better. Is this me overcompensating? Maybe a bit but life is too short to not enjoy what you want to enjoy in my eyes.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! And it sounds like you have a really fun job- resale would be so much fun- I bet you get to see a lot of neat and rare things! And you're right- everything is relative when it comes to collecting. We technically don't need any of it, but we have it anyway, and it makes us happy. And I agree- life is way too short, and we should just have as much fun as we can!
I have 34 bags between Hermès, Chanel and LV. I sometime feel like it’s a lot but at the same time, they all have a place and my wardrobe is in order. If things starts to overflow, I cannot for the life of me deal with it and I feel the urge to purge.😂 I am not thinking about adding much more. At this point, I’m adding only quota bags from Hermès and since I have to wait for my offers, they are added very sloooooowly.😂 But to me, it’s definitely collecting special pieces, I have no interest into an other plain black bag.
Haha, I know how slowly it can be adding quota bags- so that's not a bad idea! Yeah, I'm only going to chase special bags from now on, and I think that will help me keep things under control!
I think we are definitely easily fall into the hoarding category, I try to tell myself I am a collector, but am I lying to myself???? i was on low buy during the pandemic times. up until last yr....while everyone is on low buy i am no high buy....however I now set a rule....not to buy two things of the same style but different colours....I also started to organise my bag collections into clear display boxes and now i can see what colours i have and this allowed me not to buy duplicates. I also start to analyse my style, ie what types of bags styles that I like and really put practicality up as my top priority when i shop. I must admit, since discovering your channel and @Dee Dee Bean or @Jak's Bag Attack or @Super Dacob, it has reignited my shopping fiend hahaha.
It's really smart to recognize that it could turn into a problem and create a guideline to keep it from getting that way. I notice that I swing to extremes- I either go through periods where I'm vintage/contemporary obsessed and buy lots because they're affordable, and then I swing the other way and stop buying to buy a bigger H bag. It's a pendulum for me I think lol.
Now that you asked if we're a Hoarder or Collector. Well..... I collect bags but everything els I hoard. It's terrible. I've been doing better since I've told myself stop going to Ulta, Bath and body Works, and the mall or go on line. I do have to see your Birkin unboxing. After this video I will move on the unboxing. I have to watch what I buy. We will be selling our have in 2 1/2 years and buying another. I want a one story home now that 2 kids moved out and we have 2 more to go. I enjoyed watching.
Thank you, Yoshea! This was such a fun topic to unpack. And I'm working on also not buying as much other stuff this year. It's been working pretty well being more mindful, but it's hard work!
I don’t like either word. I do have a lot of handbags. Almost 50 I think? I am definitely not a hoarder and collector implies I don’t use my items.. But definitely collector if I had to pick.
I have 50 designer Hermes’, Chanel and Fendi along with vintage coach graffiti I am selling my 3 lv vintage bags Noe pet noe Gm black epi leather from 94 and a Saumur 35 redone by lv in Vancouver
This was interesting. Collector? Hoarder? I'm not sure where I fall, but the nice part is, we each get to do what works best for us. :-) You know, you have a beautiful collection and just because you don't want to part with the items just means you know what you like. :-) Collector, definitely collector. :-)
Hey Jame! I agree- Collector 💯 ! You're so right- how we approach collecting will look differently depending on the person. And at the end of the day, you just have to do what brings you joy and go with the flow!
I’ve been thinking about this for the past year. I want to buy some pieces instead of fillers but at the end of the day they just hold stuff. I’m completely overwhelmed. I send bags to the real real and they or UPS lost my shipment. 8 bag lost 😡 oh well. I was going to sent more but I think I’m just going to sell them on Poshmark.
I just wanted to so badly turn away from this video. Such a fine line between a hoarder/collector (or is that just hoarder wishful thinking?) I love bags, always have, but now older more than ever, because I can. Agreed it gets to the point one must put the breaks down and evaluate. After careful and thoughtful thinking I have concluded I am ..... WHATEVA! LOL It is what it. But agreed too, eventually we change our wants and focus on other bag agendas, like the style, the want, the need. But at the end, do we really escape the addiction? :)
Hi Caleb...I don't usually comment, but I question how often you and other youtubers rotate your bags to fully enjoy each one? I get overwhelmed when I have too much stuff, especially items I haven't worn with tags affixed. I will usually give myself 6 months. If in 6 months, I don't use an item, I return it. Fortunately, I shop at a dept store where I can return my stuff for a full refund within that time window. I feel 5-10 bags is a good amount. But if you are a collector, 25-30 bags should be sufficient. Anything more is hoarding.
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. It sounds like you have a good approach toward shopping and what works for you! For me, I like to rotate bags once or twice during the weekdays and once or twice on the weekends. With my large collection, it was hard to really rotate well- but now that I've downsized a bit- it's more managable!
I consider myself an 'accumulator' not a 'collector', but not really a 'hoarder' either. I am the same with books, only they are more problematic because they are cheaper! LOL! Thank you for the video! Great topic!
Less is more. More is also more 😆Our handbag journey is an evolution. I'm in your same stage and obsessed with Hermes. Yes it's more money but, do you really need 15 Coach bags which you end up cycling through quickly? Classic pieces are forever and Hermes is a tried and true "investment" At the end of the day, bags aren't the worst addictions. We all have our vices, I think handbag collecting isn't the worst vice. I am a big fan of indie brands as well because they can be more innovative and they aren't pushing out new collections every season which can end up being tiresome. I'm honestly afraid of doing a video on my entire handbag collection because I honestly do not know how many purses I have lol
You're so right- our handbag journeys are an evolution, and I love it! And since we're in the same boat with where we are in our collecting habits- I'm finding that this approach is much more enjoyable. You're right, why buy 15 quick bags, when we could buy just 1 nice bags that we'll have for a lifetime? I'm really excited to be in this phase of my collecting, and I'm having a lot of fun with it! And you're so right about indie brands. The big houses are just churning out new styles every season, and bags just don't have the same staying power that they used to have. It's a shame really.
@@CalebSnell the thrill i got when I got my first Hermes bag. It just feels different from buying a Louis Vuitton bag. I still love LVs but I don't get as excited about it anymore. And because you know an Hermes cost so much more, you also associate the amount of effort and time you put into buying this bag. It's an accomplishment. And yes as much as we all hate and love the Hermes game, if you get offered a bag in store it's like another accomplishment. As silly as it may sound but Hermes has created a genius business model. Yes indie brands are overlooked alot of the times, which is a shame. Hi from Chicago btw 👋
My friends ask me how I can spend $4k on a used flap bag when I can get a similar YSL one cheaper and brand new. To me, I knew that if it wasn't a Chanel bag, I would never be satisfied and that I would still want the flag bag of my dreams. I would just be spending money on filler bags!!
Hmm I find labels in general not terribly helpful. For example, you might call someone with 10 bags a maximalist but the article says hoarder. For me the distinction is my feelings for the piece and its place in my life. If I love a piece and it works for me I will go for it in multiple colors. Some pieces are unique and stand on their own so I have one. But if I’m not using or enjoying a piece, it goes. So what label would I get here? Collector? Hoarder? Maximalist? Flair-ologist 😉 (that’s the one obviously)
Ooooh- I agree, Flair-ologist 100%! Haha! I agree, and the comments in the article really echoed what you said about the labels and how they're not one-size-fits-all. Which is so true. What might be perfect for one may over or underwhelm another. As long as we're having fun, I don't see any problems with it!
I've been watching your videos, and just realised, I haven't su*******d 😆 I love this topic that made me leave a comment. I asked myself the same question, when is it going to be enough? I dont have huge collection but I am now questioning myself haha. I maybe like the specific product at the present time, but am I still going like it in the future? Am I just following the trend? Am I going to keep the product for the rest of my life? provided its going to last. Most of the time I imagine myself wearing a specific dress or outfit with the bag that I want to buy, then ended up buying. But then, how many times am I going to wear that dress? We buy because "oh this will be good for the season" and stuff like that, without thinking smartly. I think there are so many factors that affect our ability to think smartly. I call it an addiction, once you start......good luck 😅 WE ALL NEED TO SLOW DOWN or STOP when needed. I need someone to tell me that whenever I shop lol. Thanks for this great video Caleb ❤
Hey Aisa! Thank you so much for watching! And I relate to everything you said in your comment. I too buy bags because they'll look great with this outfit, or that outfit, but at the end of the day, do I wear that outfit enough to justify the bag? I'm trying really hard to slow down my habits, and so far it's working out pretty well... at least that's what I'm telling myself! haha!
Is having 5 bags okay? I have 1 vintage weeknd bag 1 tote for my art supplies 1 everyday use sling bag 1 cross body Messanger that could be used to carry money for train trips/travel (There mostly LV or Gucci dupes 🤷♂️) Just want to avoid hoarding or build an obsession thanks for the advice anyone reading this
The guy you quoted is way too reductive. Handbag collections/hoarding - any kind of collection/hoarding - is much more complicated than that. For me, I've found that my tastes and bag habits change. I go back and forth between wanting to wait for luxury pieces or buying every contemporary bag that catches my eye. I enjoy having a variety of bags to choose from in a variety of colors and textures. I have way more than 10 but I'm definitely not a hoarder. Not a collector either, at least not in the sense that article described.
Right?! It had the potential to be a really good article, but it just boiled things down to their most basic essence. The comments on the article were a good read- that's for sure!
Let's unpack: are we collecting or hoarding? I'm not sure what category I myself would fall in- but I'm working on making some changes.
It is interesting to see how your collection has changed over the years.
Loved this topic!
It hasn't already gotten out of hand? haha! Safe Space!
@@CalebSnelllol
At least games can be corralled in small, safe spaces!!! 😂😂😅😅😅
That's a really good approach to collecting! I love it!
I downsized big time to 8 bags and I’m so much happier, less clutter and anxiety. I have the bags I love and actually wear now.
Way to go, Traci! That's got to be such a good feeling!!
Caleb this is a good question😊. I think the difference is with hoarding they go into super dept. now collectors are different cause you sale some of your bags. I think your thinking is perfect . My bag count is a lot. I am scared to go look in my closets.
Haha- I really need to take a moment and count where I'm at now- I sold a lot, but I have no idea how many!
Well the hoarding vs collecting is something each person will have to answer in their hearts based on their core values and why is it they buy bags, really. It isnt always to fill the void of another bag.
i like bags and i have more than I need to carry things from one place to another, so historically most groups would consider me a hoarder. But in modern society we think a tad differently about goods and consumption.😉
But the variety of bags do brighten my day so pretty and cheerful.😊
I feel trying out a more affordable or filller bag with the same type of silouette of a luxury bag is helpful in finding out the few styles and items you love.
Hey Hunter! That's really good to hear!!
Oh no I'm a hoarder I collect Dooney and Bourke and coach and Michael kors and I have about 125 bags way too many I'm definitely a hoarder. Thanks for this information this was very interesting and eye opening. Have a great night 👜👜👜💗
Haha! Safe Space, no hoarder judgement here. And I love Coach and Dooney, so I definitely understand the appeal!
Thank you!! And that's a really good idea! It sounds like you have a solid plan for your collection, and that's so important! Thank you for watching!
Hello and thank you to whoever gifted me a subscription yesterday. I really, really appreciate it!

Collecting or Hording what is inportante is Happy you are❤❤❤
That's so true, Josie! Happiness is all that matters!
@@CalebSnell same to you!!! Can’t wait to hear how the next few months goes with collecting 🥰🥰🥰
So excited for this premier! I have a constant mental battle with myself about if I have gone overboard or if I'm just a collector. Can't wait to hear what you have to say on the topic!
Thank you, Digital! It's a tough topic!
Hmm, what about buying a thing that gets used up, ideally kind of quickly? Like bath bombs, lol.
Definitely a collector with hoarder tendencies 😂. Enjoyed this video and the points you made!
Haha! Same!! Thank you for watching, this was a really fun video to plan out!
Right?! I'm still learning on how many bags I want to keep in my collection, or how many I "need". It's an everchanging number!
@@CalebSnellVery interesting topic! Great subject to dive into and think about!
I currently have 5 luxury and 11 contemporary bags, 4 SLGs. I have 4 luxury bags on my wishlist- 2 Big C’s and 2 LV.
That sounds like a really well-rounded collection!
I say whatever if you're not hurting anyone than enjoy, great video ❤😊
That's so true! Thank you, Kaylhee!
@@CalebSnell your welcome
I haven’t read the article but the topic is interesting. At the end of the day, you gotta do what’s best for you. I have a lot of bags, but I use them. For me, I’ve always had the approach of 1 bag per quarter, IF there’s a bag I want. As far as the “filler bag” goes, I think it’s a great way to test a bag before committing to the big ticket bag. Great video! Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you, J! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. And it sounds like you have a really good approach with how add to your collection.
@@CalebSnell I try 😉
Caleb, all I can say to you is that I’m NOT talking to you anymore 😂!! I’m coming close to limit teetering on having crossed over. but that’s all I’m gonna say. Tfs 🛍️👛🙏🚢
HAHAHA! Please don't be mad at me, Dee Dee! I couldn't live with myself! Haha, always a Safe Space!
Great video! Great info on mindful purchasing.🖤🖤🖤
Thank you so much, Shery!
The pink ostrich is a total Gwenny bag. I will take the dark brown peekaboo bag next to it! 🤎😘
I think this might have been for another vlog? haha! I hate when it does that to me!
I’m BOTH
Haha, I love it!
Omgosh you are so adorable and I love that you have so many bags, cuz I do too!! 😂
Thank you so much!!
Lol. Tfs Caleb 😊
You're so right! Having a channel definitely makes us add more to our collections than we may have otherwise! Thanks for watching!
Hey Millie! You're right, it's intimidating to start, but it feels so good once it's done. My biggest advice is to make sure you're ready to do it!
Great video... I've gotten rid of a lot... still looking and saying I need to get rid of more.
Thank you so much! I'm in the same boat- I'm ready to get rid of a few more!
I was at like 40 bags but it was a lot of contemporary and not what I actually want. I'm down to 25 bags and I think I'm going to pump the break's because I want to have more special bags instead of lots of not so special bags 😂
Haha, it sounds like we're in the same place, Ed! I want more special bags and less not-so-special bags!
💯 now if I can just stay off the internet at night lol those $100-$300 bags add up real fast and I have to stay strong lol 😂
Everyone has a different way of approaching bag collecting. I cleared out my contemporary collection to make way for more luxury! It feels great to see shelves again! ❤❤❤
Hey Raelle! Right?! It was such a breath of fresh air for me after the sales!
This is an interesting video topic. I would love to see a video on the 10 bags you are always reaching for in your collection.
Thanks Melissa! The funny thing is- I filmed a 10 bags I can't live without tag earlier this year. The only thing I'd change is my Birkin instead of a City bag!
@@CalebSnell yes, now that you say that I do remember that video 🤍
That's a smart idea, Husker! I completely agree!
I have 2 LVs n an LV wallet. Is that a collection??! They are my fav house of lux bags!
If it makes you happy- it's a collection!
Great topic! A bit of both for me to be honest. Excited to see the direction of your collection in the future 😊
Thank you, Eva! Same! And I'm excited too, it's going to be a fun ride!
I’m excited to see the next chapter of your bag collection! Neutral bag addict over here! 🤎😘
Yasss! I'm excited too. I can't wait to get some new clothes!
Great video! Very thought provoking!!! I think I have fallen somewhere in the middle, but I can say that I am currently digging my way out!!! 👏🏼👜👏🏼
Thank you so much, Corikay! I think I do too- but I'm trying to be better!
Love this so much ❤
Thank you so much, Elliott!!

Thank you, Jolee!!
Good question. Time to declutter again 😂😢
Haha thanks!!
I don’t like either word. I do have a lot of handbags. Almost 50 I think? I am definitely not a hoarder and collector implies I don’t use my items.. But definitely collector if I had to pick.
That's a good way to look at it! Thank you, Whatif!
I have 50 designer Hermes’, Chanel and Fendi along with vintage coach graffiti I am selling my 3 lv vintage bags Noe pet noe Gm black epi leather from 94 and a Saumur 35 redone by lv in Vancouver
Very nice! That sounds like a well-rounded collection!
I may someday double my collection from 2 to 4
Hey GinKat! I hope you're doing well!!
@@CalebSnell I'm doing well and enjoying your thoughts
I’ve been thinking about this for the past year. I want to buy some pieces instead of fillers but at the end of the day they just hold stuff. I’m completely overwhelmed. I send bags to the real real and they or UPS lost my shipment. 8 bag lost 😡 oh well. I was going to sent more but I think I’m just going to sell them on Poshmark.
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that! That's heartbreaking to lose so many bags. I hope you were able to resolve the situation and it wasn't a total lost.
@@CalebSnell They resolved the issue. They are going to give me a payout. Not much but something is better than nothing. Have a great night.
this is a very interesting topic.....want to hear what many have to say....Don't want to be a hoarder of anything....
Thank you, Linda! It's an interesting topic, that's for sure!
Haha, I don't think we can ever escape the bag addiction. But as long as we're having fun, that's all that matters!
Hahaha, you're right about books. I love collecting books as well- and you're right- the price point makes them dangerous!
If you can afford to do it, do what makes you happy. 😊 Life is short..
That's a great point!
I couldn't agree with you more, Sav! I'm the same way!
I have 1 vintage weeknd bag
1 tote for my art supplies
1 everyday use sling bag
1 cross body Messanger that could be used to carry money for train trips/travel
(There mostly LV or Gucci dupes 🤷♂️)
Just want to avoid hoarding or build an obsession thanks for the advice anyone reading this
I think a collection is okay as long as you love and use what you have!
@@CalebSnell okay thanks
I’m probably both. 😂
Same here- just depends on the day lol!

Buy less but better
