    A whale and her calf have been captured on camera splashing around next to a bunch of excited surfers.
    The epic drone footage was taken by Dominique Taylor, 31, who initially presumed the right whale was a rock.
    The photographer who lives in Sydney, Aus, was ‘jumping for joy’ when she noticed it was a one of the largest mammals of the ocean in Manly, Aus.
    She captured the footage on August 2 [2020] at approximately 1.30pm.

    I am so amazed that the mother allowed this encounter to happen at all!
    She must be pretty trusting of humans, then again, she clearly knows what to do if we get too close! Since (Most of) the world stopped hunting whales, perhaps they don't see humans as the same kind of threat anymore. If that's true, then what a victory for both species, and what a treat for us to be able to see them in the wild. We need to remember to give them lots of space, if they want to get close, it's up to them, not us.

    what a fascinating interaction between mother and calf! Watching her in action is like watching a good sheep dog :) At 0:01, bubba is flapping happily on the surface like a puppy, heading straight towards the humans. Mama whale has got her flippers full keeping this runaway toddler in check. She is on his/her case in full protection mode from the get go, diving down under bubba to steer him/her out of trouble 0:17. When bubba insists on turning back towards the humans, she employs the lateral tail sweep (which she uses later on to knock away the fin swimmer and 3 surfboards), to push her calf's tail down and thus turn him in the other direction. She turns him around alright, but then he just stays there staring at the surfers 1:20, so she has to do it all over again 1:23. Dear bubby still doesn't seem to get the message, and is now yet again heading directly towards the surfers, so she decides to be a bit firmer this time. She does a quick 360 degrees underneath him/her, and this time around she uses her tail flukes 2:05 to lift bubba up and pitch her wild child to safety onto the side of her away from the humans -- the "mama roll" technique. I've seen more dramatic versions of this "baby rolling" technique in those videos of a mother whale protecting her baby from orca attack. This mumma did a great job of keeping her little one under control and safe using minimum force. Her focus was not on harming the humans (which she could very easily have done) but on redirecting and teaching her calf.

    The swimmer got too close and touched the calf then the mother turned & whipped her tail around, sweeping the closest surfboarders & the obnoxious swimmer away with the motion of her tail. Looked like it had to hurt but it served that swimmer right, for sure. All mother mammals are protective of their young and will always put themselves between their babies & strange humans who try to defy nature. It’s a lesson in what not to do - don’t mess with a mother whale’s baby, she’ll spank you with her tail & it’s really going to hurt. Presumptuous people. Would you try to pet a baby bear in the forest with its mother standing guard? No? Well, mother whales & their babies should be treated with the same deference. They’re not your pets, people. • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 3 года назад +5

      @@CBlargh Fine's up to about $5,000 & up to 6 months in prison here I think, which kinda seems trivial now compared to what we're getting for covid breaches.
      I totally get where you're coming from & agree with it, that said......
      It's a law that's hard to enforce, because whales tend to approach humans, making things complex. All those surfers broke the laws, which say they can't go closer than 100 metres, but in reality, finding them all to fine them isn't viable, so authorities in situations like this would instead enlist the help of those around the serious problem one in order to get their details & witnesses if needed for the prosecution & make an example out of him & then just advise the other surfers that if they do it again, they risk the same fate.
      We used to be really really tough on these sorts of situations, but it's kinda at the point now where it's really hard to do, cause there's so many of the whales & so many of them initiate the contact, I mean have a look at this one ruclips.net/video/GsW0jwHCPl0/видео.html so what do you do when in reality the whales are wanting the contact? This one at Manly came inside the shark net & right up to a crowded area of the beach, it was the one that first breached the 100 metre rule. Now clearly it was really uncomfortable & the situation shouldn't have happened, but it's still really hard to regulate given the current situation, where the whales are liking people & often initiating it & many of the people in this one probably honestly thought the whale was doing that here, they could only see from their own vantage point, not the whole picture.
      To touch the calf is a clear, indisputable violation that would get the full force of the law though, although again I'm not sure if it will right now, due to covid & to some extent the human authorities will probably take the same attitude they have been with a lot of stuff in recent times, but applied to the whale instead of the humans ie, if you want to be stupid & put yourself in harm's way, you face the consequences, we're not going to run around rescuing you every 5 minutes, figure it out yourself!
      Note that different rules & applications apply to the white whales, cause they're really rare, so it's 400 metre limits on them & really strict enforcement, but if a whale enters the shark nets & goes right up to people, they likely won't care that much, other than the person who touched it & hopefully the calf also learnt it's lesson & will stay clear of humans in future instead of stressing out it's mum by going so close to them while she tries to get it away from them.
      Also note, enforcement on whale watching companies is much tougher than situations like this, because whale watching companies are potentially chasing them & distressing them every single day, whereas this was a one off incident not likely to repeat. Whale watching companies will report problem operators & they will be investigated & licences revoked. There's certainly no cowboys operating in that arena! They've all been re-registered years ago & any company that even mentions that you may see a whale or dolphin in any of their promo material for their cruises is required to be licenced with National Parks for whale/dolphin watching

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 3 года назад +6

      @@CBlargh & just to give you an idea of what I mean when I say the authorites are taking an attitude of "figure it out yourselves, stop expecting us to rescue you", recent weeks we've had coastal landslides taking homes & people refusing to evacuate as the cliff their home is on falls into the ocean, authorities response - go door to door, make sure they are educated on the situation & danger & have a safe place to go/offer them accommodation if they want it, if they don't want to leave, fine, leave them & let them kill themselves!
      Same with the flooding that happened in a number of coastal towns.
      Same with the January bushfires, give education & give the public all information the firefighters have to make informed decisions & if they choose to stay in the path of the fire, please register so we can find your bodies more easily later, or leave your recycling bin full of water on the street, that will let us know where to find your bodies too
      Same state & we have new covid cases in the community (previously near eradicated, now re-introduced from a problem people area outside the state), no increase in restrictions, just the Premier & head medical person doing regular press conferences asking people to please use common sense & minumise large group events & please stop the pub crawls in the middle of a pandemic, cause it's making it extremely difficult for contact tracers to do their job & impacting large numbers of people when someone gets the virus, so come on people, act like adults so we don't need to hurt businesses again! lol they're determined not to enforce rules on people, just to educate them & ask them to self-regulate their behaviour, so I can totally imagine them looking at the whale incident & saying to the whale, "well wtf did you expect if you went inside the shark nets & right up to the surfers at the busiest part of the coastline you could find! If you don't want people around you, go to a less crowded beach!"
      They started it about a decade ago with replacing all the super safe playground equipment with super high & challenging climbing equipment to teach kids risk assessment & have just kept going that direction, replacing nanny state with "use some common sense or learn or die from your mistakes" & it seems to work pretty well most of the time tbh - and is rather entertaining & gives lots of wtf moments as people get their heads around needing to take responsibility for their actions or die.
      If anyone had been seriously injured or killed by that whale's tail swipe, the response would have been something like "this is why we have regulations around not approaching a whale, because they're wild animals that can easily kill you through natural behaviour, not meaning any harm. We send our thoughts & prayers to the families of those that died & we ask people to please think about how your actions impact on your family & friends & recognise that death is permanent & it is devastating for those that no longer have you in their lives" ie politely put "you were an idiot & your family will now suffer because of that, the rest of you idiots watching, please get the message before you repeat it & hurt your families too. We care about them, not about you, you deserved it"

    Momma whale didn't want to tail whip those little annoyances into mush, she just gave them a gentle nudge heads up. Such an intelligent creature. However, I wish I was there to experience a memory of a lifetime.

    Has anyone else been noticing wild life acting differently since we've been acting differently?
    I honestly think they're appreciating us being at home, we are way too noisy for them.
    They are coming back to the beaches because we haven't been present, notice the shark attacks have been higher, dolphin numbers have moved in to shore and this whale is even more proof.
    The seasons are back to normal since we're not emitting as much either. Other winters have been warmer than 2020. Probably because we aren't emitting as much co2.

      I think the baby swam up to where all the surfers were waiting for the swell, and mama
      obviously had to chase her baby. I think it’s that you’re not allowed to approach them any closer than 300 feet.

    How the pair of them managed to get inside the shark nets for that experience is beyond me! Then back out again without difficulty after it. Clearly intelligent animals, shame the humans watching them weren't as smart & couldn't just watch & keep their distance

    Regardless of the reason those whales came so close to shore, and to humans, the surfers and divers should have respected the whales’ space. Why couldn’t that diver just stay idle and enjoy the magnificence of these beautiful creatures?! Why can’t people understand limits?! Had the mother hurt him due to his greediness, it would have been justified. Thankfully, the mother reacted with just a warning. How thoughtful of her. Humans aren’t as kind. Maybe we should take a lesson or two.

    Some complain that they were to close to the whales. Well, come to think of it - this is two species meeting in wild.
    Whales and humans.
    The whales approached the humans and the humans were interested to say "hello" without harming eachother.
    Nothing wrong done by the whales or the humans here.
