Mate I dead set think you have hit the nail on the head with this video we all lose fish from time to time but the hook set then letting the fish swim is a massive thing so helpful all angles out there and very well explained thanks Robbie 😊

Great video Robbie, you're right that there are a lot of factors to think about. Your tactic of having a solid drag for the hook up and then backing off a bit if it is a solid fish is a good one. I do that a lot myself on the big Snapper and Mulloway
The only time I go with objective drag settings is in the game fishing world where we set the drag at 1/3 of the line's breaking strain with a set of scales. The reason for that is we use mono and it pulls the stretch out and then puts direct pressure on the hook to punch it into a Marlin's boney mouth. There are drag adjustments during the fight as well but we always know where on the big reels where that 1/3 drag pressure point is as a baseline.

I remember an old Richmond footballer, at a fishing show, said a rule of thumb for setting drag is: half the breaking strain straight off the reel and a third of the breaking strain off the rod tip.

I set mine tight then undo the drag one turn then test the line to see if it working if not i go 3 on my drag then test it then if it starts dragging i just leave it . When running circle hooks i let a bit of line out floating on the water then watch it when it starts heading out i slowly start wonding it in with no striking let the hook do the work

I remember watching a fishing show back in the late 90’s/ early 00’s was stated that for a rough baseline drag set, the rod should have a nice, kind of natural bend in it and then adjust based off fish species. Pretty sure i’ve dropped all my carp cause the drag is roughly set for 15cm bream 😂

Depending on where you have the rod. If it’s not in a holder. Loose enough for line to to come off when without moving the rod. Otherwise when fighting fish just enough to keep a slight bend in the rod

Sorry Robbie this is not a good way to teach new fisher persons how to use the drag as reel makers state 1/3 of the line class . This is how records are set ! with a good drag setting a 6kg fish can be caught with 3kg line and only 1kg of drag . For playing with the drag with a fish on the line this only make things a lot harder as now the drag washers have lost friction with each other you don't know how many kg you have set as it stops then started to run again it might take twice the power to start the drag running again and snap your line. The reason no drag button they don't know what size line you are going to put on your reel ps love your videos long time sub keep up the good work 👍👍👍
