What Happened Inside the Airplane Graveyard?

- I visited Mojave, California which is a famous airplane graveyard in the desert. More than 100 planes are stored here and it is end of the line for most planes that arrive in the graveyard. I went inside an ex Thai Airways B747-400 to take a look at the interior, much to my surprise the interior had been kept intact. Then I step inside an ex-Qantas B747 and found my way to walk on the 747 wing! I could almost touch the winglet!
Then we drove to Victorville to meet up with an airplane scraper Huy, Huy gave us a tour and explained how they tear down airplanes using an excavator. The useful parts, such as the engines, the avionics and the interior, are usually stripped out for sale . We went inside an ex United B747-400 and ex Singapore/VIM B777-200 to take a look.
Talaat Captan, owner of Air Hollywood, and Anthony Toth, co-owner of the Pan Am Experience, appear in this video as tour guides of the airplane graveyard storage.

when I see all those planes, I get this nostalgic feeling. It hurts a bit.
It does. I was excited to be around all these planes (Flown many) but felt sad at the same time.
Same here. Like a race horse taken to slaughter when it's not needed anymore. Sad
Cas Plomp I agree with you it's cool history the sad part is the people in charge of disposing of these aircraft want 10 X plus the amount scrap metal to sell them and you remove them I would love to get a giant piece of one I can move it myself but they don't care about the past they just want the cash🤑
Me too
Cas Plomp dont be sad they are donating their spare parts to keep their sisterships alive and some of them will live on as aerial firefighters test beds government transports etc after the last passenger and frieghters are gone. The Kc-10 fleet will be around for years the last big concentration of Dc-10s after fed x retires theirs.
Woo! I am Thai. I am so glad that you like the Thai's Boeing 747 and very thank you for showing Thai aeroplane to the world. I've worked for Thai Airways for 11 years now. 😍😍🥰🥰
You know it has to happen & every plane has a date to be scrapped, but it still tears at your heart to see these amazing machines go. Great video!

Nearly get tears in my eyes when I see Thai 747 how I fly both from Arlanda and Kastrup several times to Bangkok. Now I living in Bangkok with my wife. Nice Sam.
Thanks for bringing this to us. Its so very rare!
What a great gig Sam, good for you. Very cool experiences.
7:05 the moment they stepped on the wing, makes me realise how huge the wingspan of 747 are!

@@TheThailand101 Umm I can playing Soccer With my friends In wings Of A380 i think :v
I flew Thai Airways many times. When boarding, the music and atmosphere was so refreshing. After landing, they gave each flier a fresh orchid.

The graveyard is about to get very crowded
Thanks Sam, I feel sad when I see majestic machines like these being scrapped but at the same time it's fascinating to see, wish we had places like that in Australia, I would love an aircraft parked on my property.❤
What interesting and informative vlogs you have here on you Tube Sam. Thanks so much for your passion.

@Kardos András I personally think that everything related to aviation is a paradise for avgeeks🤣
Indeed going there must be both a dream and a nightmare...
Indeed. It was so fun that we didn't realize we spend an entire day out there!
@@SamChui OMG i was going to say that you are super geeky but you admited that you are. They are just normal airplanes and not even cool old ones.
Love this youtube video about your visit to the Mojave desert in California state, where they parked all those B747 airplanes, never know about this parking place in that desert overthere. Is so sad to watch all those huge airliners laying in that hot sun and dust .....waiting for stripping of parts, motors etc.. Nice work done by showing us all those sights. Watching from Paramaribo !
This is kickass,I am so glad you shared your trip.Wish I could do things like this.
Seeing all those airplanes that are never going to be back on air makes me so sad and weirdly gives me goosebumps... Great video, Sam.
I would really love to visit there one day..
5:05 imagine that throttle is not entirely gone....

It doesnt got a engine tho so
Ameer Shafiq the engines are gone and most likely there would probs be no fuel in the plane?

Love this video sam!!! was at the one in Pima AZ...that was amazing too...thanks again for all this great footage...Paul K
You have no idea how envious I am. I hope I get a chance to visit there. It's every aviation geek's fantasy. 👍✈
I’m imagining the excitement the crews felt on their first trip on one of those planes after it was placed into service. Just think of all the memories that were created (sad and happy) on many of those flights.
Great video Sam! I spent many years crawling around in the confined spaces and fuel cells of over a dozen types of aircraft. I actually worked on Spirit's ship 133 in the late 90s! Like you, I could go there and spend a week just milling around, like a kid in a playground! Thanks for the out of the ordinary, aviation video. Your videos are a gift to aviation enthusiasts the world over. Cheers!
Sam is totally optimistic guy even at the airplane graveyard he still give good complement. He is definitely very cheerful guy.
Thanks Sam for this. I knew of the 'boneyard' in Mojave; passed by it many times for my former work. However, I was unaware of the one in Victorville, Wow! Such a sad end to these iconic multi-million dollar aircraft. But, at least some of the parts are being recycled.
"Let's look at the old girl one more time..lets go Inside her" Daym, Sam is really enjoying himself out there ain't he
He should have said lets bring my meat into these old girls again.
Too funny

I have to 👏 at you. Your hard work flying has made you a well known figure in the airline business. Air miles. Well done. Love your videos. Very professional.
Wow very nostalgic, I have flown on those China Airlines and Thai 747-400s. Thankfully there are still a few around in the air for a few years to come. Next you need to visit the Boeing Everett factory where these jets are born. Got to see the last Lufthansa 747-8i and the Future Air Force 1 under construction there a few years ago. No pics sadly.
7:10....how small a man looks in the wings. The 747 is engineering marvel...
Mr. Sam.. Is there a plane in the world in which you haven't travelled... ☺️. You are really a lucky person. God bless you with more and more of ✈.
that is a good question. so far i think that he has travelled with all the commercially available air lines. and some more rare once. So the only thing i am not sure about are ether plains that have been taken out of service before he was old enough to fly at all. some small regional aircraft's. and air-planes that are off limed (think of militarily or governmental owned aircraft's) I am also curious if Sam has ever been flying in helicopters and the likes.
He's off exploring that's why he didn't reply ... 🛬✈🛫🛩
Again Sam, thank you very very much for showing us around, well done ! 👏🏻
Thank you for this awesome documentary. You guys rock.
To see one the most iconic aircraft ever built in the Boeing 747 in a boneyard is very haunting and nostalgic. My favorite airplane overall. Thank you for taking me on this amazing tour! Sub'd
747 is also my favourite plane

I feel the same. Why can’t they keep using 747s? They’re beautiful.
@@sian2337 mostly because there's faster airplanes and the A380 kinda took it out also my favorite plane such a good plane go to waste
@@eetrizect7407 The a380 didn’t kill it, efficient twin jets did. Also the speed had nothing to do with, it's actually amongst the fastest airliners.
Hi Sam. I am very impressed by your coverage of all the aircraft located in the Californian desert! I was very surprised to see a Qantas Boeing 747-400! My father used to work for Qantas and I have flown on many jumbo jets of Qantas in the past! Keep up the good work Sam and thank you so much for this very interesting download vlog!!

Hey Sam, Thanks for sharing your passion, I don't know how you have all these contacts to get you access but keep up the great work my friend!
Sad to see an airplane graveyard. But Sam put it into the most interesting light. Great playground for avgeeks - would love it. Thanks and huge like!!
Wow Sam that video was absolutely fantastic!! The 747s in particular will always have a special place in my heart ❤
Ive flown on this one too, must have done on account of 25 return flights on Thai 747s 400s, mostly in economy but a few upgrades to business class upstairs. Thai was always my favourite airline between Australia and the UK. The seat pitch in economy was 34''. I did the BKK to Phuket in that odd business class alongside the long galley.

One of the few times Anthony needs correction:
Not all 747SPs had the longitudinal galley. TWA’s SPs were delivered with galleys that ran left to right between doors 1 L and R rather than the longitudinal galley between doors 1 R and 2R.

Sad to see the demise of such great flying machines !! Well done mate...great video !!
I would love to see inside those MartinAir MC-11s ... the were convertibles... could be changed from passenger to cargo configuration, often done seasonally when they'd fly their MD-11s to the Dutch Islands in the Caribbean.... or for charter. I think they were used more for cargo, at least when I was working there.
I love sam chui, hes always in a great mood
This is honestly kinda sad to see. ☹️ Happy to know though that they’re recycling at least some parts and not all going to the landfill.

Great video. Miss the Thai Airways interior. The only corrections is that the Braniff SP had galleys like the classic 747s.
Are they selling those seats? I'd love to have one of the First Class ones at home.

Awesome video Sam! So Sad 😭 I’m so sad to see all these jets scrapped and ruined! So many memories!! 😞
What an amazing place. Love this content!
That Boeing 707 at 1:24 is a very rare bird. She was originally N408PA, Jet Clipper Morning Star. That aircraft has been at Mojave for a long time. I still hold hope that she will find a way to a museum for static display - in 1965 Pan American colors, of course.

Inspiring with the image of thai airways, now it's truely almost at grave.

Wow, I have been on some of those Thai 747s since 2001, was sorry to see them go but welcomed the A380 which has since stopped flying, just love flying the BIG planes!
Back in the late 80s to the mid-90s, I worked for a couple of airlines in flight operations. I remember several times where we ferried aircraft to park in the desert, though most of those were going into storage. But it's nice to see the end-of-the-road where they go at the end of their flying career.

I've shed sweat n tears maintaining those Qantas 747's at the Jet base in Sydney...and now they're just slowly dying in the desert.
10:14 VH-OJN was one of the first planes I worked on as a first year apprentice.

Yes, started in general aviation/warbird restoration then did an apprenticeship with Qantas in the mid 90's before moving on to another airline.
John O That's cool! I just started studying A/p so I like listening to people's experience, my instructor worked in the 747's as well! One hell of a plane but boy does it require alot of elbow grease . Best of luck and thank you for your hard work. Technicians need more recognization :)

The 747 is a great aircraft but it was designed before computers were big and as such it could be hard to work on, whereas the 767 was designed by computers and around easier access for maintenance workers.
