thanks for this review I have the Reverb G2 v1 and looking to upgrade to the Crystal maybe
Switching from g1 to Crystal will beat you up :) in a positiv context
@@liebesmaennchen sounds amazing!!!
Just a few corrections. The Reverb G2v2 introduced a power button on the break out box, so it does have a power switch in that respect, the V1 didn't however. Also, you compare the audio of both headsets, the G2 comes with Index like speakers, the Dmas from Pimax was free with the Crystal but as a pre order deal, now if I remember correctly, the Dmas is optional and extra cost.
The G2v2 can also be had much cheaper when it goes on sale (like on Black Friday), thus making it a even better deal, at full price, I don't think the G2 is worth it due to it having pathetic controllers and it being a WMR headset (pain in the butt). But when it's on sale, then yes, it's a great headset, I have a G2v2 and am very happy with it, unfortunately, the Crystal and Aero are way out of my price range, otherwise I would be VERY interested.
Hi Jack! We also have the G2V2 in our office, but right now in Vienna. I bought the first G2 before the official launch and also got a -50€ because of the late release. Yes, like I said in the Video, I would love to see a cheaper Version in the future, but man, it must be very hard to create such a Product like the crystal. It is sad, that HP gave up on VR pretty much. G1 and G2 are very good products.
@@liebesmaennchen Agreed, I'm in Canada, so with the currency exchange, the Crystal would cost me somewhere around $2500 and I don't think that includes shipping. Ouch!!!!! LOL
As for HP giving up on VR, I can't say I'm surprised. If only the G2 would have been a SteamVR (lighthouse based) HMD, it would have been amazing! :)
100% G2 with LH, wow this would be amazing. I tried the LH Mod with the G2 for quite some time, but then I bought the Vive Pro 2 with LH out of the box and it was so much better.
@@liebesmaennchen For room scale play, I use my Valve Knuckles (OpenVR Space Calibrator) with a pair of VRDongles, works surprisingly well. But I mostly use the G2 for sim racing, for this purpose (no controllers needed) it's a wonderful HMD as long as WMR doesn't throw a issy fit! LOL
That was always a pain in the butt, one false button and mixed reality started :D
I had a 45 minute demo of the crystal a week ago in London. After I took it off I felt cross eyed for a few seconds until my eyes ajusted to real world. I have experienced the same phenomenon with my 8kx, but not with other headsets like the G2. Also I did not acheive full clarity outside the center of the image in the crystal. I did use my exact ipd and tried tightening the headstrap all the way untill I could see the edges of the display (to try to fix the issue), but did not help. I also did see some distortion when moving my head around. Did you have any of these issues?
No, don't have this issue's. I think, it is necessary to find the right settings. The high clarity can be tricky, the Hmd has to be sitting perfect. With the new firmware, you have auto ipd and also kind of an sweet spot finder.
I have the G2 and still love it. My IPD is 60mm but i use 63mm on the device. Works great because of the really big sweet spot
Hi Zubu! :). Same here, I never agreed with users who are claiming the G2 having a small sweet spot. Too bad, there probably never will be a G3.
@@liebesmaennchen I´m still waiting for one... will never come i guess. It´s too bad. Now that HP stoped producing the G2, my hope died
@zubunapydaddelt6407 yes, not the best sign. All of the members from the HP VR Team are in different companies now. Let's see how Sominum will/when perform.
I had used my G2 for about a month before I pulled the middle gasket out and BOOM ! ... big fov improvement and the sweet spot was gone ... it was just sweet ... all of it !
@zetapal modding is king 👑❤️🐒
Dear Ham VR
Can you recomend this Pimax Crystal headset just for room scale VR? Shooter - Skyrim VR , Fallout VR Hubris , Hellsplit Arena ect..
I have a Reverb G2 and i can handle the room scale VR but i would like to get a better picture quality.
Thanks this answer in advance,
🥓 I can recommend the crystal for nearly every game. For fitness apps, I would use Pico 4. If you use the crystal with LH faceplate, you have the best tracking and the best picture right now.
Dear Reinhard Roscher,
Bionocular overlap is good in this eadset ? You can see the 3d effect very well right? Because in the past i have one pimax 5k plusand the a3 effect was very poor because of this lack of bionocular overlap. Thanks this answer in advance.
Yes, for me this is very fine, but you should consider to wait till the wide FoV lenses arrive. I will hopefully get them soon and of course I will make a video about it
Thanks this answer and please tell me the crystal contoller is compatible most of the steam VR games and Oculus home games ( with revive ) ? Thanks this answer in advance, @@liebesmaennchen
All the games I tried worked fine. With Revive I tried "Asgards Wrath, Lone Echo (too dark)" Also there is a really cool option which simulates the Index Controllers. Do you know about "trymytec" it is a very cool way to try out the crystal.
Pretty much my thought on the two HMDs. I love the Crystal, but the G2 has served me well, and was definitely punching above tis weight. Honestly, it had good edge to edge clarity for a fresnel lens headset, could see cockpits clear enough. Obviously, it's not a Crystal, that's just on a whole new level, but it's still a good headset.
Same here, I will always love the G2, but the Crystal is my new VR-Trophy Wife :D Right now, I´m testing the Battery charging, works very well when using PCVR
@@liebesmaennchen Not gonna lie, wireless PCVR in some games would be a nice upgrade. Hopefully it works well.
Yes, tried this with Pico3 and Pico4, but I´m aiming for the best visual quality. Hopefully, streaming will get better, right now, it is far away from being similar to DP-Quality.
@@liebesmaennchen It'll take a while before it reaches the point of being unnoticeable from wired DP, that's a compromise I'm somewhat willing to make for some room scale games.
I do hope that, with the wigig module, we'll be able to close the gap even more, though.
I hope so too, would be great to see some major improvement
Did you tried the G2 V2 version or just a V1 version? Because the V2 version has a wider FOV
Yes I tried the V2 and we have it in our Vienna office, but for the video I used the old model. The bigger FoV is not really noticeable in my point of view, maybe if you do an side by side test.
I am faced with the decision 8kx or Crystal, can you go back to the 8kx instead of the Crystal?
I hope Pimax can get out another 15% in fov.
I like the idea of interchangeable lenses.
Hi there! I loved the 8KX, but I cant go back from this perfect picture. Pimax is working on Wide FoV Lenses, so yes, there will be more FoV in the "near" future. Like you saw in the video, I own most of the common HMD´s, so from now, I would only go with the crystal.
G2 owner looking to switch device due to Windows lqck of future support. Very comprehensive video, thanks. Whats the name of the test app at the end? Cheers
Thank you. It is called test Hmd you can buy it for 4$
I hope pimax makes the 12k so that it also has intergahable lenses, think about what 6k (16MP per eye) resolution could be with 110 degrees glass lenses? It would reach retina resolution first in the world.
Yes! I would also love to see the 12K really soon! Also it would be nice to see RTX 5090, but I also would love a smaller Formfactor.
Reinhard, I agree about a G3. give me PCVR light weight, pancake lenses, micro-oled or Qled with micro diming and nothing else. No standalone wireless features. Sadly the Quest 2 to G2 ration was well over 10-1 sold and we're in the minority as PCVR simmers. Pimax commented on one of my comments saying to expect something later this year. I hope a Crystal without Xr2 and battery, just aspeherics and wired HMD. but who knows. I am not buying the Crystal because Quest 3 will have Quest Pro pancakes and 2160x2160 with a price of $500... it's too much of a value question and Pimax flaky past doesn't inspire $1800 worth of confidence.
I know what you mean and yeah the crystal/pimax isn´t for everyone. But I have to say, there are many, many users out there, who are really happy with the crystal. LH Faceplate will soon be available and one thing is for sure, Pimax is PCVR and they try to push this. Meta and Bytedance sadly not. Somnium could be good, but right now, nobody has tested the HMD so far and I don´t think, we will be able to try the hmd in 2023. So for now, the crystal is my personal King, but I have love for most of the hmd´s.
These higher resolution headsets need appropriate GPU to power them. The G2 is 2160 x 2160, that's pretty sweet for a 4090 ... gives you a lot of headroom to power an 11 millisecond 90Hz native refresh and then go on to use the remaining pixel power to turn up the eye candy in your games. You'll be leaving that behind and it'll be back to tinkering with foveated rendering, eye tracking, and per game tricks with filters and such just trying to get everything to look right. For me it's a big 'NO THANKS ! ' ... While everybody else is looking to move on to newer headsets I'm like 'great, now let me buy another G2 for backup storage while I can still get one before they sell out of the market ' cause they're not being manufactured anymore. Yeah, I'm doubling down on G2. I think they actually screwed up and made the perfect headset.
I fully understand your decision and yes, the G2 is a very good product. But you have to see the crystal for yourself to see the difference and how big of a quality step this is. Right now there is no other HMD or competition out there.
I'd love to see a review on the Vive Pro 2, maybe comparing it to the G2
Hi, I will compare the Vive Pro 2, but only to the crystal. If you have question, I will try to answer.
@@liebesmaennchen I'm curious about how apparent the issues most youtubers have complained about are to you, since you've used a lot of different models. Mainly the heat, the low stereo overlap and the narrow vertical FOV.
Also interested to know about performance - having used the G2, i've noticed it upsamples the image by a lot in steamvr (to 3200x3200 per eye sometimes) and you can't get maximum FPS with it even with the most powerful cards. The Reverb G1 doesn't do this and runs smoother despite having the same panel resolution.
wait, so which one has to plugged into the wall??
Come again?
@@liebesmaennchen which one needs to be plugged in. The reverb? or the pimax? it's kind of unclear in the video...
@@64ElMariachi ahhhhhh now I get it. It is the Reverb G2 with the big power connector
I don't like the Reverb G2, I find it's max IPD is just too small and the face plate is made for narrow heads, it is very uncomfortable and I hate the Windows Mixed Reality software.
I started PC VR years ago with the Vive, then the Vive Pro, which both went to max 74mm IPD. Then Reverb G2, and Vive Pro 2 (returned because it didn't go to 74mm IPD). I finally settled for a Pimax 8KX, and although it was a pain to update firmware and set up, it has been very reliable for 2 years now. I recently got the PSVR2, very impressed with it, and what you get is very good value. Now we just need PC VR with high resolution, eye tracking, foveated rendering, and IPD that goes from 57mm to 75mm. I still prefer PC VR over PS5 VR2. I don't use standalone headsets, Quests are just too small for me.
You are right, the IPD is very small in terms of range. WMR is really annoying, even 2023 it is not good in my opinion. I really love my 8KX but since I got the crystal, 8KX is in pension now :D. I also love the PSVR2 and wow, it is so good for the VR Market, I hope Sony will push VR and don´t leave the field standalone Meta garbage games.
120hz is huge difference in iracing everything looks clearer at high speed and helps lap times improve. 160hz would be so good
Yes, I tried Ultrawings 2 and you can see the spinning propeller of the plane looks way smoother, so now I get the 90 vs 120 "people" :D
I think it depends on other settings and games, too. in ACC going from 90hz to 60hz is very bad, I cant race in 60hz, very laggy, big latency. Bit in AMS2 60hz fells much smoother, nearly no latency, no big difference zu 90hz, so I switched to 60hz to use native resolution for my G2 in AMS2 with high details.
@mh7711 I like the 72hz with the crystal and the crystal light. In beamng.drive I use the 72hz Mode and with Assetto Corsa, I use the 90hz mode
@@liebesmaennchen nice! in assetto corsa I have 90fps with my rtx 3090, with csp deactivated, then it runs very good smooth at full native resolution from hp reverb g2
@mh7711 it's not a huge difference 90 and 120 to look at but in competition racing my fastest lap times was with my pimax super at 160hz.
Regarding the debate over the sweet spot of the G2, it seems to be down to eyes or head shape. For some users, the G1 is better, and for others, the G2 is better.
Absolutely, vr is such a delicate topic and there are so many variables in the equation. Maybe, there will be a better way to test vr hardware in the near future.
I never had an issue with my G2 and small sweet spot. Also could be a lens lottery as well.
@@Killswitch1411 There was enough testing done by the likes of MRTV to show it wasn't a lens lottery. He tested loads of G2's at once, and they were all consistent for him, even though many were coming from people who experienced a tiny sweet spot. Definitely one of VR's biggest mysteries :)
@@moogleslam That's why I said it could be.. doesn't account for lots of other factors. G2 is pretty split on those who had a good experience and bad. I had a pretty good experience besides the crappy controllers. Those things were trash.
Thanks for the review but you give points on features that have not yet arrived and we do not know how well they will function. In my opinion you can’t give a point on something you have not tried and knows works well
Hi Nick. Thank you for your feedback. Which feature do you mean in detail?
@@liebesmaennchen maybe the upcoming wide fov lenses. But even without them, the crystal has bigger fov 🤔than g2. But there is also a rev version. It has bigger fov !
I use a 3d printed gasket for my gen 1 g2.
i bought a g2 and its useless as their is issue with the wire and they expect me to replace the $100+ wire every few months. never buy anything from hp again.
Oh man, this is really bad, I have heard from some users and the cable problem. The saddest thing of all is that your wish is granted, even if you want to, you will not be able to buy from HP as the VR division is no longer available. I have to say that I haven't had any problems with the cable.
pimax introduced lighthouse faceplate $200... ya... Considering you can buy a G2 V2 for $300 vs $1800+ for Crystal, the HP reverb wins... despite everything else. Crystal is an overpriced Beta, and not a finished polished Varjo Aero.
Did you try the Aero and the crystal?
@@liebesmaennchen I got to play for 2 hours with Aero. it's very good. I have an OG Vive with base stations and index knuckles too so base station tracking is what I favor but $1700 better than my $300 G2 I don't feel that's the case.
Maybe you can try the crystal. Sebastian Ang started trymytec, it is an awesome way to test expensive hardware!
@@liebesmaennchen I saw his launch video. Very interesting idea.
Crystal is too expensive.
Yes, unfortunately Meta and Pico destroyed the real price for Hmds. I talked to the CEO of Pimax and his answer was "the crystal is way cheaper than the apple vision pro" :). I'm interested, what would be a decent price in your opinion?
@@liebesmaennchen They could have brought down costs by making a few different versions, a pc vr tethered version and a standalone version. I believe if they make a standalone pcvr tethered version without controllers using lighthouse, the price could have been similar to a 8kx! If they make the price of such a vetsion 1200 USD i would definitely buy it. They must remember that in other countries around the world there is an added tax shipping cost and import duty. Thus the reason for making a cheaper version with less bells and wistles would have been great.
I think, we will very soon see something in this direction. For me, standalone is just something I don't need. Crystal LH PCVR with better formfactor, would also be my choice. Let's hope for the best
Test hmd, i used binding from steamvr community
I bought the software from the developer. As far as I know, the steam version isn't up to date.
@@liebesmaennchen me too. But the Binding is also changable there. Just press the steam vr button on controller in test hmd
I will check this tomorrow Reinhard
ah yes, I didn't try this, I was happy, that I could finish my testing, it was so much more work than I thought
@@liebesmaennchen and i hoped to see some 1:1 compare in gamescenes. But yes. It would be much much work and time.
G2 worse headset I have ever own. G2 was the one that I did not want to do VR because of this crazy blurriness. You had to move your had to get that tiny sharp spot. My god, good I threw away this faulty by design device. After I was blown away with Pico 4 and in few days gonna get my crystal. Well see
Well, that is the beauty of VR, it is very individual. I liked the G2 back then, but now, Crystal is King and looks like, it will be for a while. Funny, that you like the Pico 4 that much, sure, without cable it is very nice, but standard tethered PCVR is more like "meh". Let me know what you think about the crystal when it arrives,
@@liebesmaennchenI used Pico 4 via WiFi6 with 4090 GPU and visuals were amazing, bigger sweet spot allowed me to read airplane cockpit with ease.
Now, I have 2 weeks crystal and plenty of issues I can't even describe. It annoys me so much that I want to return.
for me the sweetspot in my G2 is very small, too, makes no fun.
