Modern Times has a special place in my heart. I was still a teenager in college back when the album was released and had just started listening to Bob a few months prior. At that point in time, I was only familiar with his "famous" records like Freewheelin', BIABH, Highway 61, BOTT and so on. One night as I was driving home from school, an infomercial aired on NPR about his new upcoming album - "Modern Times". I remember being completely shocked by this news. I didn't even know that he was still alive, let alone making new records! This was followed by the sheer excitement of being able to buy a Dylan record on the day it was released! You can tell what happened after...
That is such a cool story! Thanks jinal for sharing! I absolutely wore out my Modern Times CD well not completely but it should be for the number of times I've played it! LOL! This is a wonderful rendition such beautiful footage and great sound! I think it is better than the studio! : )
Glad its up here for everyone's joy. It was a thrill to film this show while constantly keeping an eye on both the focus and at the security the same time. My hand ached for 10 days keeping this as steady as possible.
Thanks Jinal for this and your Modern Times affections. I feel you, I reflect on my excitement for that record as well! Loved the retro video made for this with the beautiful ScarJo appearance
What is it about this song.. . ? So much room for ease. C E7 F6 Dm7b5 C/G G13 (or not the 13th ) C C7 F6 Dm7b5. C F C/E D7 G7 sus4 G7 C E7 F6 Dm7b5 C/G. G13 G7 C etc
Right? I’ve loved this song since it came out. I was about 18 years old and I remember driving this long lone bridge surrounded by water heading into New Orleans. My grandfather had just passed and I felt some strange kinship existed between this album and him- like it was some soundtrack of his life. Anyhow, years later I finally learned it on guitar and was reading up on it. You gotta check out Bing Crosby’s version of ‘Where the Blue of the Night’ which Dylan pilfered for this song. Somehow, finding that out, it made sense. It feels old- like Dylan’s version is a new beautiful branch of some ancient wistful tree…
This song has, at least, 6.000 years of metaphysical knowledge within it.

I think it's one of the best Bob Dylan's song and I love this version! It's a brillant poem sung with passion and compassion.
