  • On May 15, 2022, a destructive severe thunderstorm moved southward through mainly rural areas of central/eastern Oklahoma. The storm produced grapefruit-sized hail and 70+ mph winds.
I planned to observe the storm at a gas station to protect the car from hail and just made it just in time before all spots were taken. Winds were easily topping 70 mph with reports of significant structural damage nearby and causing the town to lose power. The biggest hail just BARELY missed me with baseballs reported just a few miles from my location. The max hail size I experienced was about half dollar sized (1.25"). You can hear some of them clunking onto the back roof of my car as I was hanging out of the awning to let the person in front of me back up when the wind was strong. (They later pulled forward to let me protect my car entirely when the wind calmed down, but the hail never got big enough to cause damage anyways.)
Afterward, the back side of the storm displayed some incredibly frequent and beautiful cloud-to-ground lightning followed by a once-in-a-lifetime display of mammatus clouds! Enjoy!
