Without disparaging the amplifier recommended in the video, it may be more costly than a buyer looking at the LRS can afford. We have used many vintage amps with Maggies in developing our tube preamps. For those looking for a great match for Maggies at a reasonable price I recommend finding a used or restored vintage Carver amp. We have found the TFM line (TFM22, TFM24, TFM25, TFM42, TFM45, TFM-4.0), the m500t, and the m4.0t all deliver great results with large Maggies and with other high quality speakers, too. (All models I mentioned deliver more than 220w/ch into 8 ohms and more than 350w/ch into 4 ohms.) These can be found in working condition for $300 to $500 in several online locations. There are also several restoration experts in Carver gear online. These amps were a bargain when new and are still a great value. (They sound even better with a tube preamp, imo. ;^)
The LRS has a good WAF (wife approval factor) and I have a small 12'x12'x8.5' dedicated listening room. My only concern is will my McIntosh MC240 drive the speakers adequately. I never play music above 75dB continuously. It's great that Magnapan offers a sixty-day trial period for the LRS.
I would suggest an Outlaw audio RR2160 mkii for amplifier power. $999 and has enough grunt to push the LRS'. It a few other features that might be useful also. BTW, great video 😉
Hi guys thanks for the great review and your comments. I just purchased some LRS's from you this week! I know they are back ordered, but can't wait. Agreed the Hegel H90 would be outstanding, but I have heard good reviews for the Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 3, or possibly a Schitt Vidar. Do you think these are worth considering as well?
I liked the XPA-2 Gen 3 but when I got the DR1 mono blocks a whole new world opened up! The XPA had tons of power though and good sound. It had no problem running the LRSs and had a good sound stage. Lets put it this way, even though I got the DR1s I am not letting go of my XPA-2
Great info and advice. Could you tell me if you think pairing the Hagel(?) H90 amp with vintage (late 70's-early 80's) Magnepan ribbon planar speakers would work as well (with a Denon RL-60 turntable) to give the optimal sound you are describing, or is that too much 'juice' and a Frankenstein mishmash with vintage components? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Enjoyed the video. Is the H90 a decent pairing with the Magnepan .7? Saw in another q and where you suggested the H90 and the 1.7i was ok but not ideal.
I just referenced this. I am considering LRSs. I spoke with a sales engineer at Magnepan, and he stated that my Emotiva A-300 should be a good match for them. Has anyone else had experience with this combo?
Hi and thanks for the great review. Can I pick your brains on whetheryou would consider driving them with a 10 year old Hegel H100 at 120w ?? or is that not enough power ? I also have access to a Vincent SV-236MK at 150w. Thanks four your time and expertise....
They sound just fine with my CREEK 5350SE. I don't need deep bass for most of the stuff I listen to. I'm rediscovering a lot of music I own. It's never sounded better. I also own Joseph RM25XLs.
I'm always amazed that the audio community continues to insist on separating the final transducer {the loudspeaker} from the amplifier driving it. At typical low voice-coil impedances, this creates a market for heavy-gauge transmission lines {speaker cables} that wouldn't be an issue if the amp was built into the loudspeaker, and fed line-level analog signals or the equivalent digital data on inexpensive, light-weight shielded-pair cables. I'll grant that an integrated amp/speaker would then also require a nearby AC power outlet, but that is a trivial concern. This would free up the system designers to design an amplifier to best operate their speaker, allowing trivially easy yet more accurate crossover implementation, perhaps with separate power stages feeding each of woofer, midrange & tweeter, while saving the consumer the hassle of worrying whether their amp will work well with their chosen speaker. Leave those details to the speaker designers! There was a need in the 1920s ~ 1960s, especially in movie theatres, for the amplifier{s} to be separated so that they could be quickly serviced if one or more of their vacuum tubes failed, but today's amps will operate for many decades without any human intervention. We have mindlessly continued a practice that is no longer necessary. Oh well, just my opinion...
great video. took me 5 years and 3 amps to find the right one(arcam delta 120 power amp) for my speakers(b&w dm580). this is exactly what i want from audio reviews and rarely see. matching components is such a big deal yet no one talks about it so we have to gamble every time we buy a new component. it's also very relevant for headphones.i think that most high end headphones are used by people without proper headphone amps.ide love to see you guys put together a desktop system for streaming that includes a dac, headphone amp and headphones .
I purchased the LRS speakers and the Hegel 90 integrated amp, partially because of this review. At a volume of 20, the speaker is inaudible. At 40, it is barely audible. Very disappointed in my decision.
Did you change the stock jumper to a tweeter attenuating resistor or straight wire? This is the best way to improve the resolution of the MMG. Just wanted to see if it was a similar stock setup.
Has anyone listened to the LRS with Peachtree Audio Integrated Amplifiers? I pulled out my Peachtree Audio 220SE Integrated and connected to the LRS last night and the combination sounds incredible!!!
I currently run an old Carver Amp with an Emotiva pre amp on one system, and an Onkyo TX-NR808 on another. I think I see that Amp in my future replacing one or the other. probably the Onkyo.
Hi from Australia, which amp do you think is better match regardless of the price? The Parasound JC2 and JC5 or the Hegel H90? Thanks. Love your channel. Frankie Ng
My mmgs provided a similar experience. Made noise on a Nad 312, sounded good with and adcom gfa 555. Detail began to really open up with the Ayre V5XE.
I know this is older but it’s sooo frustrating to hear your guys talk at out amplifier pairings in dollars. That’s doesn’t mean anything to anyone. What amps have good current, because from what I’ve seen that’s what matter right? The speakers don’t give a crap about how much money you spent on the amp. The speakers are looking for something very specific and you gentlemen are in the prime position and authority to tell us all what that is. It’s not dollars....help your audiophile family out!! Love you guys. Keep em coming!
Yes, it's current that counts especially for Magnepans. It's not too complicated to understand that Power = Voltage * Current. So "60 Watts" can be, for example, 60 Volts at 1 Ampere, or 1 Volt at 60 Amperes (or any other combination that multiplies out to 60 Watts.) And the amplifier interaction with a load (in this case a speaker) is affected by the inductance/resistance presented to it. The Magnepans present an amplifier with a thirst for current. One of the very long running problems with many audiophile recommendations is not specifying how well any given amp can deliver the _current_ needed.
Love the cheap-in-the-U.S.A. XLR+ and I would buy them in Europe if only shipping and VAT would be added. But these are a pack more than TWICE the price here in Europe!!! What ridiculousness is that? 😢
High current DC Maybe even a little sigma servo .... Makes you wonder with the PS external supplies That's my pick for these ... Idk how ribbons would work with sigma
This is going to sound crazy but I have tried multiple power amps with my Magnepans. My old B & K amp drives them very well and they sound very musical....
B Hall Great suggestion. I have a great number of amps that are higher in wattage but not in amperage which couldn’t drive Magnepan as well as the B&K. I would also recommend a high current Parasound.
I purchased 2 SVS SB-1000 and then got the LRS, I haven’t bothered connecting the subs as I’m content with the bass, but I’m not a bass head. If you do get subs with these, you need to get very fast subs since Maggie are fast, otherwise the Maggies and subs will be out of phase, so I’ve heard. I’m using a Rotel RA-10 amp, will need to trial the H90
One of the most overlooked aspects of this expensive hobby is system synergy. It's not necessarily hooking up the best of this and that and getting the best sound. Not shocked hegel equipemt can sou d as good as it does with them. Darko had similar experience ( though more expensive but similar price points around $13k) with kii 3 active system vs a kef ref 1 system driiven by a more expesive hegel h590 integrated. I can only imagine what pass labs equipment would sound like with the lrs maggies. I would be happy with one of the lower pass integrateds or pass labs xa25 amp with one of their pre amps. With a good source and maybe a sub end game system😀
Yeap I wonder would my $1800.00 Pioneer Elite rev. with @120watts of MOSET Power be enough , cause if I live long enough I'm getting a but That's All The Hi-End I'm going.🔊🔊. END GAME 💯👍🥂🎉
@@ronaldrice2936 Trust me i have had many magnepans tubes sound so much better in front of them every solid state sounded terrible yes good bass but midrange flat and treble screechy. I used stuff that was recommended and was not cheap .
Greetings from California...love the video btw. Intrigued about the Hegel/Maggie combo and got a couple of questions. First, would you think any Hegel amp will produce the same synergy with any Maggie (I am planning to purchase the .7), or is the H90 special? Second, stereophile praised the Rogue Sphinx/Maggie .7 combo, what are your opinions on this? Third, if you had to pair the Hegel H90 would it be the LRS or .7. Thanks in advance.
There is a caveat with magnepan first you need a sub a pair even better than you need a powerful tube amp not steely state. So after all is said and done you would be better off buying a set low powered tube amp and super efficient speakers and then you will have a beautiful sounding system at one third the cost. Sure the speakers are cheap but to get them to sound fuller you need to spend a lot to accompany them.
If you can't afford an amplifier that costs 4X the cost of the LRS get a used Carver amplifier with the "magnetic field coil" power supply or Sunfire amplifier with the "tracking down converter" power supply as both are able to deliver the high current needed to drive the LRS properly. ruclips.net/video/cJro26WxdaQ/видео.html
That statement made no sense at all. The LRS is less than half the price...…...…………….Many people such as myself run them, you don't need as much room, spend a lot less yet get great sound.
It's not an all around speaker. It's good at acoustic folk and jazz, also electronic music. It will not deliver orchestral or rock well. Recommended for a secodary system or complimentary set of speakers.
A properly tuned subwoofer solution that fills out the bottom octave makes the above statement quite inaccurate to my opinion. I find no issue playing rock metal electronic or orchestral music. You will indeed be missing notes with the speakers by themselves. They simply can’t reach the bottom rumble. Honestly even 1.7 don’t quite reach the bottom without assistance.
Magnepan speakers are a novelty at best. They draw so much power they destroy amplifiers, and the people that work there are not informed about the products enough to be answer questions about compatibility. Also, the sound is directional and don't film the room well. Buy SVS instead and save yourself the headache. These aren't "great," speakers by any measurement.
@@kohnfutner9637 Try musical paradise or Sweet Peach Similar amps cost about 4500$ These amps only make a few watts But the watts they make are on par with very expensive amplifiers , so just use a sub and a high pass active crossover. I am surprised at this review. Not about the Magmrpan, but the Hegel. It is an absolutely over rated amp. It had very poor drive capability. It was s damp squib in comparison to the vintage Adcom GFA 535. It is a product/bramd where you will find very few user reviews and manly paid magazine reviews. Hegel is an amp that highly dissapointed me as I had gone eagerly to buy it and came back very very dismayed.
I use only a few pieces of equipment, swapped infrequently. My Parasound 2125 lost a channel, so I had to swap in my 30 year old ADCOM 545-II on my KEF Q350. All I can say is wow, I don't care if the Parasound EVER gets fixed. My system went from Best Buy to a premium soundscape. Non the less, I couldn't go on with the ADCOM, and ordered a Vitar, which is coming tomorrow. I am quite interested in the LRS though. The open design seem like it would be good for a rear home theatre set-up. (ducks for cover)
Used to like my 1.7 magies. But then they didn’t want to stand behind them when I was having issues. 500$ they want to fix them. Thanks but time to move on.
The Mylar peeled away from the frame. I decided I would fix it myself rather than pay the amount they wanted to fix it. What was the worst that would happen? I would have speakers that didn’t work? they already sounded crappy. Pulled them apart and re-glued the Mylar to the frame. If they used better glue in the first place or would stand behind the product despite them being “old” (what they told me when I gave them the serial number) and fix them. They work pretty good again now
@@TeensierPython I've heard alot of magneplanar have issues with longevity . The best speakers I have ever heard were carver magneplaner on Krell monoblock . I was considering running some high current amplifiers after hearing some new ribbon studio monitor I never heard the sound projected like that before .
I took the risk of repairing my 1.7 Maggies on my own. 7$ bottle of glue did the job. I did the repair 3 days ago and played them last night. They are sounding pretty good again. I was debating paying the 500$ Magnepan wanted for the repair or buying the LRS. So now I don’t know how I feel about them. Love the sound. Just wish I could get more life out of them. They draw so much power they destroy amplifiers, and the people that work there are not informed about the products enough to be answer questions about compatibility. Also, the sound is directional and don't film the room well. Buy SVS instead and save yourself the headache. These aren't "great," speakers by any measurement.
Do you actually listen to music in that echo chamber?
Kind of like my Klipsch. I don't like Denon with Klipsch, I like Yamaha with Klipsch. Denon is ok with Elac.
Try Klipsch with a SET tube amplifier
It's really a giant killer set up
Like voice of the theatre type set ups were compatible
@@dednside5229 is that a guitar amp? All I'm bringing up are a bunch of guitar speakers on Amazon.

Try musical paradise or Sweet Peach
Similar amps cost about 4500$
These amps only make a few watts
But the watts they make are on par with very expensive amplifiers , so just use a sub and a high pass active crossover.
The best amplifiers available are about 300k$ ....
Guess what thier SET tube amplifiers .
Replace the caps and tubes with quality parts and your in buisness .
Perfect for high sensitivity Klipsch
And correct the snap aero effect in the horn on older models ....
Perfect synergy -

For high current and great sound try a 1970s Harman Kardon from ebay. Much more bang for buck.
Used to like my 1.7 magies. But then they didn’t want to stand behind them when I was having issues. 500$ they want to fix them. Thanks but time to move on.
Can you tell other buyers about what happened ?
I was considering buying the LRS
The Mylar peeled away from the frame. I decided I would fix it myself rather than pay the amount they wanted to fix it. What was the worst that would happen? I would have speakers that didn’t work? they already sounded crappy. Pulled them apart and re-glued the Mylar to the frame. If they used better glue in the first place or would stand behind the product despite them being “old” (what they told me when I gave them the serial number) and fix them. They work pretty good again now

I've heard alot of magneplanar have issues with longevity .
Just wish Magnepan would stand behind their product longer.

I was just thinking how many high end speakers can you get for 650$
You can always work around the amplifier side with studio amps or repaired choice vintage amps .
Especially now with the dacs available
I built this system (JBL Studio // Genelec II- RUclips) ....
I'm looking for a change up , Maybe an LP based system
Room sounds like you sat in the bathroom.
