Fantastic! The Petrushka transcription is reckoned to be one of THE most technically challenging works for the piano. She breezed through it!

It's almost like a Liszt piano transcription of any orchestral work. Trying to transcribe the orchestra to a piano piece and playing it is pretty difficult.

One hundred years later Stravinsky still feels like a spearhead for Music. But would that be possible without excellent interpreters like Yuja Wang? Russian Music fits her so well.

  • @Bati_

As an avid music listener, I can easily say that Yuja Wang is the best pianist in the scene in terms of rhythmic capabilities. I have seen no other as competent as Yuja Wang in this realm. Since, the modern piano is a rhythm instrument in its origins, she is really aware of the fact that this instrument should be played in this respect. Her performance on one and only Stravinsky’s Petruschka’s Russian Dance is simply enchanting and highly unique. Most likely, his father affected her feelings of rhythm very much, inasmuch as he is a concert percussionist. I consider Yuja Wang as my favorite classical pianist in the world right now. I admire her every work. Such a versatile musician. Influential. I want to thank Ms. Yang for everything she did for the cultural heritage of music. I hope I can meet her one day. Long story short, she is one of the best pianists I have ever listened throughout the entire music history. And few of the bests, maybe the best, in terms of rhythmic performance.

Historically only a very limited number of pianists successfully become great orchestral conductors. Listening to Yujia's Petrushka, you can immediately recognize her potential on becoming a great orchestral conductor. She managed different voices and singing lines, rhythm and tempo all with magic and wonders. She is incredible!

Holy shit stravinsky was incredible. Just outstanding. I can't get my head around it. How the fuck did he write this stuff? I wish he was alive, I could ask him then. Apparently he and Huxley used to hold "avant garde lunches" in los angeles in the 40s. On the one hand you have incredible performing talent and then on the other hand you have the guys who actually wrote this shit....it's insane.

I agree -- absolutely amazing & nearly unbelievable - here, both artist and composer. I am a LIcensed Psychologist and considered writing a psychobiographical piece about the genius that was/is Stravinsky... but I think he denied any "meaning" to his music. I'll try to find the time to re-visit....

@@rattywoof5259 This piece of music played by Yuja Wang is used in the video below at 0:23 just a few seconds after the three puppets are brought to life by the Charlatan during the 1830 Shrovetide Fair (Maslenitsa) in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Petrushka loves the Ballerina, but she rejects him. She prefers the Moor. Petrushka is angry and hurt, and challenges the Moor. The Moor kills him with his scimitar. Petrushka's ghost rises above the puppet theatre as night falls. He shakes his fist at the Charlatan, then collapses in a second death.

this is bautifully played in everyway. it really makes you imaginr that you are in a toy landClaude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande is a unique, timeless work. It is a bit like its characters, who evolve in another world, lost in the mists of a never ending dream, set to a hypnotic music that serves as a blurry mirror image of it. When he wrote it, Debussy asserted it is "an opera after Wagner, not inspired by Wagner”. The composer faithfully follows the plot of the Symbolist play penned by Maurice Maeterlinck, which unfolds in a sensual and dreamlike atmosphere. The singing follows the rhythms of natural speech and symphonic interludes depict the opaque beauty of the imaginary kingdom of Allemonde. It offers five acts of continuous mystery and passion, infused with music that is

Compares very favorably with Pollini's performance of this movement. Simply ignore others who criticize you on this forum. They only reveal that they wish they had half of your talent, both technical and interpretive. Thanks for sharing!
