    The day after we filmed this, Apple made a statement to Ars Technica about the jelly scroll issue!
    You can read their statement here: arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/09/2021-ipad-mini-suffers-from-uneven-jelly-scrolling-in-portrait-mode/
    Basically they say it's normal LCD behavior, which is true! It definitely could have been mitigated with a different display design though. It doesn't bother us too much, but what do you think?

      Actually, considering the position of the volume rocker is on top (so it becomes easily accessible when held in landscape) make me think that maybe Apple designed this iPad to be used mostly in landscape, maybe due to the lack of horizontal space it would have respect to any other iPad.

    The refreshing of a display is always correlated with where the display controller is placed. You can even see it on the Apple Watches Oled display, where the control unit is on the right side of the watch housing.
    When you are in a dark room and put it in theater mode and twist the crown, you’ll see the display coming to light beginning on the right side.
    It’s the same thing.

    Be nice to see Apple make an ethical device. I'm over the "thin at all costs" mentality where repair-ability and recycle-ability are sacrificed to make it a tiny fraction thinner. Really, as the world richest company, I'd have thought their engineers up to the challenge. I guess the marketing folks have greater sway. Though could be to do with the fact Apple makes most of it's money from hardware (massive markup compared to industry norms). So making it disposable and limited in life is the business model they choose.

    • @kylezo
      @kylezo 2 года назад +15

      Well, it's not about thin-ness at all. It's about profit, of course. This diverts all repair and service traffic to be first rather than third party. It's part of apples unethical and unsustainable closed "eco"system. They are actively engaged in defeating the right to repair, and even making major moves towards defeating ownership itself.

    This jelly scroll thing is something I noticed on my iPad 3 back in the day. I thought that it was on all screens, but just very noticeable on my iPad because it was so big. In my head, it made sense, because I figured it had something to do with how the screen refreshes. Interesting seeing how the iPad Air compares to the mini here. Also, I would only notice the scrolling while in landscape, and mostly when swiping through photos, since the photos would not look perfectly square/rectangle as they were moving. But I thought it was something kind of funny to see, but I didn’t notice it otherwise. Generally I don’t see it on my current iPad (it has 120hz to be fair) and I saw it a little on a iPad 8 on display at Best Buy, in landscape I think. Cheaper panels might make it more noticeable, but I think it’s not a huge deal. Apparently some people get nauseous or dizzy with it, but I don’t know how true that is

    Thanks for the flash warning, I really appreciate it as I have photosensitivity and I’m so thankful for a warning, as the few videos and movies I have seen with flashing have not given a warning and I ended up with a bad headache. Great vid! I love tear downs on technology! I might not ever do it myself and I could never stand to be in the room or area during a durability test or tear down on a brand new piece of tech, I still like to see what’s inside of it and how it works, keep it up!

    iFixit needs to re-do its reparability scoring. The rating presented for Apple products now, is at best a 'disassembly ease' score. Reparability is now hampered by Apple by means of parts unavailability, tools availability, documentation availability, and software locks. If an typical independent repair shop is denied the right-to-repair, then reparability score is zero. Also, the physical orientation of the display board is not related to the vsync orientation of the panel. A ribbon cable changes the orientation of the board vis-a-vis the panel. On the other hand, vsync orientation if perpendicular to viewing direction, can easily result in visible jelly scrolling.
