Christa Ludwig …R.I.P…the Best Mezzo by Mahler…Merci Great Christa ! 🙏❤️🎼❤️🍂🍁💫💫💫
Never get tired listening to this.
So much beauty and depth whilst not overbearing or feeling too dense. Wonderful music!
Bellissimi lieder. Con una grande Cristha Ludwig...,
What a perfect voice for this repertoire. I get chills up-and-down my spine.
Yes this is the most touching song, most impacting, ensuring , of what has to come inevitably and ever . Mahler and Ruckert got this right , and it’s never going to get surpassed by anything by anywhere anytime. Thank you.
but, david, youtube wanted to start the ruckert songs with this...um, like it's not, like, a starter...no?
In meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied!
Ihrem Wachsen zuzuschauen.
Deine Neugier ist Verrat!
Bienen, wenn sie Zellen bauen,
Lassen auch nicht zu sich schauen,
Schauen selbst auch nicht zu.
Wenn die reichen Honigwaben
Sie zu Tag gefoerdert haben,
Dann vor allen nasche du!
11:05 Ich atmet' einen linden Duft!
Ich atmet' einen linden Duft!
Im Zimmer stand
Ein Zweig der Linde,
Ein Angebinde
Von lieber Hand.
Wie lieblich war der Lindenduft!
Wie lieblich ist der Lindenduft!
Das Lindenreis
Brachst du gelinde!
Ich atme leis
Im Duft der Linde
Der Liebe linden Duft.
13:42 Um Mitternacht
Um Mitternacht
Hab' ich gewacht
Und aufgeblickt zum Himmel;
Kein Stern vom Sterngewimmel
Hat mir gelacht
Um Mitternacht.
Um Mitternacht
Hab' ich gedacht
Hinaus in dunkle Schranken.
Es hat kein Lichtgedanken
Mir Trost gebracht
Um Mitternacht.
Um Mitternacht
Nahm ich in acht
Die Schlaege meines Herzens;
Ein einz'ger Puls des Schmerzes
War angefacht
Um Mitternacht.
Um Mitternacht
Kaempft' ich die Schlacht,
O Menschheit, deiner Leiden;
Nicht konnt' ich sie entscheiden
Mit meiner Macht
Um Mitternacht.
Um Mitternacht
Hab' ich die Macht
In deine Hand gegeben! Herr!
Ueber Tod und Leben
Du haelst die Wacht
Um Mitternacht!
Christa Ludwig has the voice of an angel.
Danke!
I heard this in an episode of Babylon Berlin! RIP Janicke:(
rest in peace christa ludwig
I'm not Karajan fanatic, But this is the best performance under his direction by far in the repertoire and still remained unsurpassed,
I agree. I can usually take him or leave him. But for this big, juicy sound, and a real insight into Germanic style, He is absolutely the perfect partner here. Ludwig has the most perfect vocal instrument for this kind of thing, and boy is she an artist here!

Rückert-Lieder and Kindertotenlieder by Mahler performed by Christa Ludwig and BPO - one of moments Karajan was really a great conductor.
pega17pl Christa Ludwig must have made him be that...
great recording....she is amazing.
Love Kathleen Ferrier’s version too, hard to decide , both are absolute
It is too bad that Karajan got distracted by other projects in the 80's and rather wanted to record everything from the canon of the greats again in digital recording format and never continued his Mahler recordings.
He really had something to say in this music. I would have loved to have a 2nd and 3rd from him.
That's an interesting point. If he had not felt that obligation, he might have explored more. He was fascinated by Elgar's second symphony, according to Richard Osborne. Perhaps we would have had that. But I doubt it would have been much good.
@@thetoynbeeconvector It would have been the best you've ever heard , like always.
Bravo
Maestro Karajan who would have turned 109 years today!
All the dead children still listen to these songs in their peaceful absence.

@@arnoldamaral7406 You're one of them. Don't fear your fate.
These aren't the Kindertotenlieder.
Rückert-Lieder aren't Kindertotenlieder
It may be that sometimes Karajan overdid it. But his talent is unquestionable!
This material needs to be overdone a little bit. I perform it very much like this on the piano, or as much like it as I can When I work with the singer who can actually sing this repertoire.
Die Referenzaufnahme schlechthin!
Too bad about the distortion in this upload.
Cristal Christa
it is very beautiful but i prefer the interpretation of Jessie Norman for the first Lied, ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen...more internalized...
There are many interpretations and tempi. I can recommend Thomas Hampson as masterful in Mahler interpretations, making them sound as a lied should always be: a poem first that has to be delivered as a linguistic entity carried on a musical structure.
Oh I like Norman's version too. But this is still just wonderful.
Absolutely agree- there was an indescribable luster to Norman’s voice especially singing Leider - breathtaking.
My gosh, why did he always choose such tediously slow tempos??? The music looses all sense of pacing. Maybe Karajan's heart beat was really slow? (makes a difference in how one would choose a tempo). Otherwise, the rendering is fine.
callmeBe but doesn’t that make the 1st lied so much better?
Certainly not to my ear, Fran. Pacing is everything in music. So much more for a conductor like Mahler. And the rendering is so slow that the contrapuntal phrase work begins to unlink.
@@callmeBe There's such a thing as interpretation... not everything is technique, or we would just have robots perform everything perfectly. Someone who really feels the poem's words, Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, would realize the need for the melancholic and nostalgic slower pace, so it's really felt in the mood that Rückert conveyed.
No Fran, there is no such thing as interpretation in a modern (!!) score. The function of the conductor is to perform the score as exactly as possible; the way the composer specifically meant it to be played. And, if you were to look at a Mahler score (especially his later work), you would see he was incredibly specific as to how his work was to be performed. Mahler did not want other conductors taking license ("interpretation") with his music. I am the same way with my music ruclips.net/video/R4qEwc_0Ymw/видео.html I take great pains in making sure the score is performed exactly as I see fit. The composer is the expert on the written music; not the conductor. If the rogue conductor wants to "interpret," let him write his own material, or stick with music written years and years ago where instructions on scores were not so specific. I hope that makes sense. Until you look at a score Fran, you have no idea how much time we take trying to insure the work is performed in a very exacting way. And, Mahler was pretty much a hallmark at that.
@@callmeBe Wow, you're really proud to call Karajan "rogue" for interpreting the tempo a bit slower.
I'm not an expert in musical theory, but I've been listening to classical music since I was 4 years old. I can tell when a performance is felt and when it's just pure technique and doesn't stir a fiber in a person's heart. You know, it's no coincidence he's famous and you're not, perhaps you should try to loosen up a bit.
