Watching from Kenya, been watching every video since 2022 and retro-watched the ones before. Nice and educational. Our climate is guac climate year round. We have a lot of seedling varieties some good some not so good but we are starting to get used to grafting mostly hass and fuerte. I think there is good opportunity to discover new varieties especially since we already have millions of seedling varieties growing in people's farms.
Hello from Florida and thank you for the support. Yeah it sounds like a treasure trove of new varieties over there! Please keep us posted what you find
Wow!!! I learned something today.... I didn't know you could clean the external tissue of scion/budwood so effectively with a little soap/water/toothbrush. I think I will start incorporating this technique in my grafting practices. I have between a 25% to 50% success rate depending on species/variety. Maybe this will increase my success rate. Today is a good day. Thank you Tom.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Videos like these are priceless. Can I mention. Anyone that cannot get the parafilm. I used plumbing Teflon tape and I just left the nodes exposed. I then put a transparent packet over it and tied it down at the bottom. My grafts were successful. It worked. But one thing I do suggest to get is the hydrogen peroxide. I sprayed some hydrogen peroxide over the graft and the graft healed faster.
Very educational and overall top notch quality video! I can't buy these cuttings because: 1. They're too expensive, for me at least.; 2. I live in Bulgaria, which means I don't live in America.; 3. I'm under 18 (doesn't necessarily mean I can't buy things online).; 4. I don't have the resources like: grafting tape, good pruning shears for thicker stems and etc.. But maybe one day I'll be able to buy a pack of 5 grafts or budwood.
Here ya go Tom.... In his orchard, sweet and grand, Tom tends to mangoes, hand in hand. With gentle touch and watchful eye, Underneath the sunlit sky. Amidst the trees, he finds his peace, Where golden fruit and whispers tease. In Tom's mango haven, so fair, Life's sweetness fills the air. With every harvest, joy takes flight, In Tom's orchard, bathed in light. So here's to Tom, in mango's sway, Where dreams and fruits both ripen each day.
I've been looking to graft a mango. Just recently a seed I grew from a mango 5 years ago in 2019 started producing flowers this spring in it's large container. Didn't expect it to do that but maybe might get some interesting mangos out of it
Doing well! Thanks for asking.. Plenty of rain here (on the dry side) this spring. Therefore plants are happy and I’ve got plenty of weed whacking to do this afternoon! Haha We should be grafting soon. If you do any ‘top working’ older tree stumps in the field, please film it and share your techniques! Protecting the graft from wind and rain, would you wrap it with clear plastic bag? Or grafting tape alone… Thanks again!!
@@SleepyLizard very good video and the manzate is new to me as well but understand why you would use it (bought a bottle and started some grafts with it after your vid). is it commonly used in the grafting industry? (high number propagation, places like zills ex...)
Tom, on your previous grafting videos you put a plastic bag over the plant, is it OK to just place the grafted plant under shade and not use the bag? You should make a video of how to take care of the plants after grafting, Ex. Shade, water, fertilizer, etc.., there are not such videos on RUclips.
good point. this is a different technique. the plastic bag we keep in shade, when we cover them like this we leave them in sun. you are right I need to do one over the course of a few months to show the steps along the way. Like a once per week check in.
you don't have to but there's no reason to graft from a tree that hasn't born fruit yet...all you are doing is grafting a seedling to seedling and in that case you still wind up with a seedling. the reason we graft is to replicate the fruit from the tree we took the cutting from...if it hasn't born fruit we don't know if it will be good or bad.
I need help, my grafted avocado seedings are wilting because of the sudden heat change, from 27°C to 36°C the leaves are wilting, I already watered them and brought them in the coldest part of the house, (probably somewhere around 29°C or lower) do I just let them be and leave it to their resilience to survive? I think these are hass varieties which I heard has one of the lowest heat tolerance among avocado varieties.
@@Find-Your-Wellness-With-Me mine all grow pretty much the same but I haven't been doing this long enough to compare long term trees grafted onto one rootstock vs another. but the folks who been doing this for decades prefer turpentine
@@SleepyLizard they prefer bc it's more aggressive (grows faster and ready for grafting) than any other rootstock and people complaining that their mango trees after 2-3y of struggles just die. Question My Friend, some of my mango leaves look like something chewed on it, does that mean my mango tree has a disease and if so what can i do?? My mango tree right now has about 7 mangos right now,, Thank you sir!!! Houston Texas
grafting tape is thick and solid, new growth won't push through it. Parafilm and buddy tape allow the growth to push through. I never used buddy tape and have only recently learned about it
I've actually seen 2 of those spiders on my avacado tree. I don't know what spider It is but what those spiders do is, they find a leaf and they sit under the leaf. The pull the end of the leaf down and then they use there webs to keep it down like a canopy. The spiders web was so strong that I could not pull the leaf open. So i don't know if these spiders are good to have around. With that bright color and those strong webs. I wonder if they are poisonous.
@@SleepyLizard I'm not sure about the bright color making it certain that it's poisonous. I just know that in nature, a lot of venomous and poisonous creatures and animals are alot of the time poisonous. The bright colors are also a defense mechanism against predators. Meaning look I'm brightly colored so don't eat me because I'm poisonous.
So, I get the whole bit of the graft and getting cuttings. The one thing I don't get is producing the root stock. I know that you can plant seeds from avocados you eat. I don't know about the quality of that root stock. I don't know if you've talked about this in another video, about getting quality root stock, if there are certain avocados that are better for using the seed, etc........... My first guess would be a nursery or farm that's been doing this for a long time probably has trees they like to use to get seeds from, but just as seeds aren't true to the tree for fruit quality, isn't the same true for root stock? Or, I'm sorry in this case mango, I get hung up on avocado because I haven't had good luck with this one yet, whereas I have with mango, not for me doing the grafting but buying small trees from a person that does. Information about both would be helpful, and would be GREAT if it's already in a video or you make a video about this topic.
yes you a re right about avocado rootstock. each seed is unique so you are gonna have some underperforms which is why we do tens of thousands of trees here in the ag region every year. We like certain varieties like Waldin and Lula seeds because they tend to grow fast developing root systems. Mango we use turpentine which is polyembryonic so they are clones of the mother and therefore predictable.
@@SleepyLizard Hey thanks for the info. This is in the Philippines where we have land, though we live in the US for now. The varieties of course will be different and there's probably a wider variety of mango there. I guess for the avocado I'll have to test out seed from different trees and just plan on doing a lot of planting and expect losses. And for the mango it should be more predictable and I can ask people there what their experience is using trees from different people, or if they have good experience with seed from certain trees. But thank you for the information on mango that's helpful to know, " polyembryonic so they are clones of the mother " I'll do some reading on mango so I get a fuller picture.
