Ambergris = excellent fixative properties. In the '80s it had a big impact on the staying power of a fragrance. • Ambergris, had a unique ability to elevate other olfactory notes within a fragrance! Early Arab civilizations named it Anbar, and used it as incense, aphrodisiac and in medicine to cure many ailments.

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to aldehydes, but so far, Pikovaya Dama is the one that really does it for me. I find it incredibly soothing, almost meditative, and I wear it to bed quite a lot. I have no idea why, but the first time I smelled it, it vividly brought me back to the time when I was only 7 or 8 years old, tagging along with my parents as they were shopping in a clothing store at the mall. The fragrance just screams late 70s early 80s to my nose for some reason, and fortunately for me, the vast majority of my memories from that time period are just incredibly happy and pleasant.

Excellent video. Aldehydes for me are a bit of a double edged sword. In some cases, they really challenge me and in other cases, they are wonderful and it often depends on how they are used and what they are combined with. For example, I really struggle with Krizia Uomo. The combination of searing aldehydes and the green pine really is difficult for me. I used to have the same issue with Tsar, although I have come around to that one over time. On the other hand, I really like how they are used in Photo. I also find newly opened bottles of perfumes with heavy aldehydes are a challenge. It seems that after a bottle is sprayed a few times and then sits for a month or so it seems to mellow the nose burning aspect of this ingredient. An example that comes to mind in Encens Mythique. When I tested it in the shop, I really loved it so I bought a bottle. Then the first time I sprayed from the new bottle it really gave me problems with my nose burning and all I could really smell were the aldehydes over the first hour or two of wear. Then I didn't wear it again for a couple of months and I then the next time I broke out the bottle, I found it to be much smoother and in line with my memory from testing in the store. I'm not sure if I am the only person with this issue, but I think I am hyper-sensitive to these ingredients.

Just a suggestion, what I've found that works for me is to use sparingly these particular fragrances and away from my nose. Back of neck with one spray is enough really, as good as 3or4 with less aldehydic. Interesting you say you noticed a change in the fragrance. I always let my fragrances 'rest' for a while before I can fully test or fully appreciate, just like wine. Even though I want to try a newly bought scent once I receive it, I feel it doesn't show it's true potential until it's been stationary for a while. But what do I know? I think fragrances smell different on one arm than the other! My right arm they last ages and I can smell the transitions, left arm...flat and straight to Basenotes!

@@en.chamade Thanks Emel, I'm not going crazy after all! I saw a Katie Puckrick video recently where she says she sprays Aromatics Elixir on the base of here spine. I suppose that must be ideal when wearing a dress. You are absolutely right about the back of neck, I've found I can pick up my scent trail much better when I return to a space I was previously and it's subtle rather than overpowering. Same here on skin as it will transition. As I have to change clothes for my work (O.R. Scrubs) I get the added pleasure at the end of my work day when I put my normal clothes on to go home, the scent is still fresh on my clothes from my body earlier in the day, always brings a smile on my face.

@@LEgoiste Excellent suggestions. I also find that a period of maceration is the key for getting perfumes where they are at their best. For me, this is particularly important with aldehyde prominent fragrances. The back of the neck suggestion is spot-on. I can't hit my neck or chest areas with strong aldehydes without suffering some nose burn.

Hey Ramsey, thanks for making videos. I'm finding all sorts of stuff to add to my list. I have a question about Bandit. I tried it in a perfume store a year ago or so, I'm guessing it was the modern formulation. I thought it was very good. It was not the new male version (forget what that's called). Anyway, I heard that there was a period of time, maybe in the 90s, when Bandit was being made by a different company and had been ruined. Do you know anything about this?

Apologies was up late in on the Duck's 4hr marathon last night, great conversation and comments. So it's a beautiful sunny morning here and just watched this video, great episode again. Romeo Gigli was my signature when it was released, I loved it but of course back then I moved on. Now have it as part of my collection. I've said before I pick up the plum note and love it for that, but after hearing you break it down I am getting that cinnamon which I never picked up before, so thanks for that. Don't apologize for any mispronunciation of French, doesn't matter how proficient you become at speaking French you can never say it how the French do. And that's not just my opinion, I used to have a French girlfriend and she used to laugh at what I thought was a pretty good attempt...I didn't mind as she even laughed in a French way which was very attractive. I really appreciate you saying give a scent some time to work on you, I'm sure we've all had that experience and just think it's our difficulty in understanding fragrances, which it may be but also you need time to connect with it.
Recently I got a hard to find bottle of Princesse by Jean D'Albret, don't let the name put you off. At first I wasn't sure but after a couple of wears it's up there in Chanel No5 territory.
As for that scent with the banana accord, no I don't think they grow bananas there but that place IS bananas!😂 Brilliant as usual Ramsey, appreciate your efforts. Take care.

I was so surprised at Princesse as I enjoyed Ecusson for it's floral animalics but Princesse straight away is beautiful. I read somewhere it was described as one of the top 3 highly regarded (notice I didn't say best or compliment beast) French perfumes. You did well to find, I didn't see any at a 'reasonable' price for over 6mnths. Glad you like it. I got my Ultima 2 sheer scent by Revson (Revlon) yesterday and it's as good as the recommendations out there. Definitely original Fahrenheit but dare I say nicer? Not so heavy or assault on the senses, kind of refined, put it on at 7pm last night and now this morning it's a pleasant skin scent. Even the sprayer was a quality mist rather than sudden squirt! Have a great weekend!

I recently was sampling No 22 and it shifts more and more, so I do agree with what you say here. And yes Princesse has that area between the 3 of them. Some may not like that, but it does hold it's own against vintage No5 and Mitsouko, I wouldn't be disappointed with any of them.
