  • How does Christopher Nolan get his Iconic look in his films?
In this video I show you 6 ways you can make your videos look like a Christopher Nolan movie. The topics I cover include: Depth of field, composition, movement, lighting, color grading, and lenses. Throughout the video, the viewer will be provided with knowledge and actionable steps to achieve the “Nolan Look.”
Depth of Field - In this segment, I define several key terms, and explain the purpose of utilizing a shallow depth of field in filmmaking.
Achieve a shallow depth of field using an ND filter or Variable ND filter
Set Aperture as low as possible to get the shallowest depth of field
If shooting at 24fps, setting shutter speed to 1/50 or shutter angle to 180 degrees
Composition - In this part, I discuss several of the ways Hoytema composes his shots. We cover center punching and creating a 3 dimensional image using foreground and background elements.
To center punch, use guidelines on your monitor to help place your subject in the middle of the frame.
To create a 3 dimensional image, utilize both out of focus foreground and background elements in your frame.
Movement - In this section, I define a couple of key terms and talk about the influence of both handheld camera moment and camera dolly movement on Nolan’s films.
Purchase or build a shoulder rig to replicate Hoytema’s handheld camera movements
Lighting - In this segment, I define more key terms of lighting in cinematography and show a practical example of how to start achieving results right away.
Place your subject near a window to light them with natural lighting
Place camera at 90 degrees to achieve split lighting on the face
Color Grading - In this part, we discuss the impact of celluloid film on Nolan’s movies and go over some practical ways we can replicate this in our own work.

Lenses - In this last section, we learn the 2 very important focal lengths that Hoytema uses and utilize a formula so that we can get a similar focal length with our full frame and super35 sized cameras. Full frame equivalents: 25mm and 40mm. Super35 (APSC) equivalents: 16mm and 25mm.
As always, thank you for watching! If you have any questions, please be sure to leave them in the comments and I will reply asap.

You love that Vivitar lens dont you? :D. Christopher Nolan Is such a great director and one of my favorite movies is The Dark Knight. Thanks for making this video and sharing your knowledge on this topic. Remind me to get out and film more. Stop with the excuses but I really need to get a small backpack for my 6kpro, any advice? I just want a bag that fits my 6k pro with one lens, one extra battery and case on.

It’s a great lens, although It has been on the shelf recently. Been mostly filming with my Sigma 18-35. I love The Dark Knight! On the backpack I’m not sure, I actually keep mine rigged up and just have it in the back seat lol.

Want to shoot a feature in Blackmagic Cinema 6k Full Frame camera but in 4k DCI more which i belive is crop Super 35mm , what will be equvalent lenses to archive 50mm and 80mm IMAX field of view on this particular mode in this BM FF camera?

If I researched it right, the 4K DCI Mode on the Blackmagic Cinema 6K Full Frame has a 1.48x crop factor. so a 50 and 80 IMAX equivalent would be roughly a 17mm and 27mm. My math is 50mm / 1.97 / 1.48. and then you want to keep in mind to open up your lens as much as you can to get closer to the depth of field. Large format can achieve an incredibly shallow depth of field.

@@-austinsmith Planning to get a 21mm & 40mm Full frame Vespid primes so what will be the these focal lengths field of view on 1.48 crop mode on BM FF DCI 4K

@arunr4103 for those you just multiply the focal length times the crop factor. So 21 and 40 x1.48 gets you 31mm and 59mm full frame equivalent field of view.
