For example, there are "the furnace" -> Der Ofen -> male. In the same time you got the Ocean -> Der Ozean / Die See. so the thing 'ocean' isnt male or female, the word to say it is. And if you say Der See instead, you are talking about a see. After all, you need to change to more formes or rules in case of an other Kasus or if its get Plural, not Genus only. like Der Fluss (the lake [m]) -> Die Flüsse -> (the lakes [f]).
