- Though ultraviolet light cannot be used in or on the human body to cure Covid-19, it is an effective tool that has been in use for decades in hospitals and operating rooms to sterilize surfaces. Technological breakthroughs in UV light could become a key tool used to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

All airplanes should have build in UV Lights in the cabin, once the plane in empty, turn them on and disinfect for the next round of passengers. This should be mandatory on all international flight
That's actually a pretty good idea.
Makes sense to me. Not sure what that hasn't been done already.

Or just situated at an angle, where the light can't reach it well.
Not mentioned was the production of *ozone* by UV-C light. *Ozone damages lung tissue* - just what you DON'T WANT in a Covid-19 ward.
Ventilation after ozone generation, and absence of humans during ozone generation is important. UV light also deteriorates plastics and elastics quickly
The lack of mention of these factors makes this a *puff piece for Xenex* .
I was also wondering about the damage of materials - The technique seems interesting, but the radiation can break most organic bonds, not only on viruses.
Yea but it doesn't happen when used in short bursts. Do some more research
I havent seen any damage to plastic after years of use
They already said that the newest UVC technology does not harm masks after being tested by the big 3M Corporation.
Dave InWLA Thank you for the information!
I’ve had a UV light in my HVAC system for 5 years now along with a electromagnetic filter due to having bad allergies.
Where can i get more info on this.? I have bad allergies
SMART!
That's nice, did you expand the duct into a large chamber for the light so that the air would be slowed down long enough to be exposed long enough or did you put multiple lights in a long duct to get the exposure time? Keep in mind that conventional HVAC's are not designed to keep air in any one place for very long and it does take time for UV-C to sterilize.
I got a UV HVAC system too! Prevents mold from growing from the condensation in the system!
Most newer AC units have a UV light plug-in receptacle on its main board. When I installed my Trane 17+SEER unit in 2008 we put one of these lights in it. They charged me $100 for the light unit and said it would only last a year. After the damage of 2008 recession, I never revisited the need to replace that light. Checked 2 or 3 years ago at Amazon, the lights ran $50-60. Problem is that I am unwilling to try to open the AC unit and fiddle fart around inside of it.
I use these all the time and have been for years. People thought I was crazy. They're right but, I'm not wrong.
that's because those people don't know anything about science. Who's the nerd now😎
They should be disinfecting planes like that all the time.
Seriously!!! I thought hotels were bad but then to think about how many people are on planes each day and week it’s so much worse.

They used to spray after landing but now apparently most airlines use a persistent insecticide that's sprayed right before loading passengers at the departing airport, however if this isn't performed then officers from the Department of Agriculture will still board the plane and spray down the cabin and overhead bins before the doors can be opened for passengers to get off.

We aren't in hiding, although some might be sweating - can't comment on that. UV is also dangerous to humans of course. Plot twist: Everybody has cancer.
Lol. Still Carcinogenic.
If you made it to the end of the video, they are working on a light which emits a specific wavelength of UVC. It's at 222nm wavelength. So far studies have shown that it will not penetrate the surface layer of the human skin (dead cell layer) and not into the deeper layers of skin that have a potential on DNA damage. Also I have read that at this same wavelength , UVC does not penetrate the tear layer of the eye and thus not cause cataracts.

You're assuming that SARS-COV2 does not become endemic. Except for SARS and MER, all known Corona viruses that infect humans eventually became endemic and impossible to remove from the general population and this is likely to be true of this virus. Besides, you can avoid cancer from UV-C by not being in the room being sterilized, why do you think they are using robots and or directed beams rather than just flood lights.

They dont talk about UVC light breaking down air molecules and creating ozone in the air O3. Harmful for lungs. The UVC radiating from the sun actualy creates our ozone layer. If the layer breaks down. UVC shines further into our atmosphere and replaces and renews the ozone layer. But there must be a UVC wavelength that kills bacteria without creating ozone. True?
@@chrispaterson6292 UVC produced by mercury lamps, produce 185nm which does create ozone and 254nm which does not. Special mix of quartz (for the bulb) do filter out the 185nm and only let the 257nm and above (the blue light that can be seen 480nm), these do not create ozone.
BTW: almost all, fluorescent lamp produce UVC internally but there is a phosphors coating that make the white light out of it.

It to see if you're vaxed.
so basically we should go into the sun.
yes exactly.. the opposite of what they are saying.. fresh air and sun is needed..
No, that is not at all what this is saying. They literally say that powerful UV cannot be used on the human body, but it can be used as a disinfectant on surfaces. UV light is used as a surface disinfectant. This can replace foggers, but again, at the surface level. "Fresh air and sun" is not going to help you if you contract Covid-19. Wash your hands, use alcohol wipes on frequently touched surfaces, and avoid human contact as much as possible.
@@jyates42 wow, just wow. Lol. Did you go out and buy toilet paper instead of food when they told you too.? You know toilit paper is no good if you dont have food to eat. Hahahahah. Fool. Good luck
Jan Buchmeier No, UVC is effective against the pathogen but is nearly completely filtered out by our atmosphere (UVA and UVB getting through). Further, UVC is only (emphasis on only) effective following standard and thorough chemical disinfection of the rooms partly because even UVC is not more than added measure of additional ‘overkill’ (basically by itself doesn’t help much but added to other measures, it increases the confidence of safety), additionally can potentially disinfect those areas that were missed, and also is only beneficial once organic material such as sweat/debris like dust or dirt/oils are removed by physically and mechanically wiping them off of surfaces. I encourage you to rewatch the video again as they state those facts such as the requirement for removal of organic matter prior to use for there to be any noticeable affect. To best summarize, this is meant to be a supplement added to already practiced procedures as an additional safety protocol, not a ‘solution.’ Finally, these high intensity lights that cost tens of thousands of dollars still require 15-30 minutes based on the research to be effective (video mentions a minimum of 5-10 minutes). The sun, which our atmosphere does not allow much UVC to penetrate, is not sufficient to have any reasonable level of confidence that it is sufficient for safely preventing the spread of this virus.

He probably thinks his tanning bed's protecting him from coronavirus
Well it would, if UV a/b kills or weakens this exposed virus. If you have breathed in or touched a contaminant then it will be expelled-spread naturally and lying upon your skin and hair, not always easy to wash away. Ready to be a contaminate for others and a recontaminate for yourself
Just because you may hate Trump, doesn't change the logic of an idea, even if you create a fictional situation that you think sounds silly.
@@STho205 The same logic as ingesting disinfectants to kill coronavirus. Ohhhh you're sooo smart
@@STho205 'If you have breathed in or touched a contaminant then it will be expelled'
UV doesn't cause anything to be 'expelled'
At best, a tanning bed would decontaminate your clothing (not that you would generally be wearing clothing in a tanning bed) and skin/hair i.e. things the light touches. A tanning bed would do nothing to affect virus particles you have already breathed in.
If it did then just standing in the sun would be an effective treatment against most pathogens.
@@merrymachiavelli2041 if you breathe in a virus, it will be expelled partially later by sneezing or coughing. They always are. That contaminates your skin, which then provides contaminant to again be rebreathed by the person, rubbedin an eye or transferred later to another person, such as your Co-quarantined family. 66% of NYC infections are by people reporting as staying at home.
So UV exposure will make the expelled virus weaker or less viable for reinfection, just as hand washing or bathing, however hair and non hand areas do not get washed constantly or even regularly by many people. This is why most flus and colds occur most from Nov to March especially in colder, higher lattitudes with weaker light, longer/thicker clothes and people that bathe less frequently. Any crowded subway ride in Dec will attest to that.
Think it though before you react. Reason is not hard, unless mass bias blinds you from your own abilities to think.
@@STho205 I am indeed thinking. What I am thinking is that there is a difference between decontaminating and treating.
UV is effective at decontaminating surfaces - I completely agree. From an individual perspective, hand-washing is probably more important (and potentially safer, given that repeatedly exposing your skin to large amounts of UV probably isn't great in terms of skin cancer), but we are agreed it is an effective method of decontamination. That is not new medical knowledge.
What it _isn't_ is a treatment. Which is what Trump was implying. If you have coronavirus, or if you have just breathed in droplets in the air from somebody who has sneezed (a common route of transmission) lying under a UV lamp will not help. _That_ is what was wrong with what Trump said.

They used to actually put uv lights inside clothes dryers in the 50’s and early 60’s to help kill of bacteria and viruses during the polio epidemic of the 50’s and 60’s and I have a friend who has a fleet of vintage appliances and has a couple of vintage dryers with uv lights in them.
this is very true
And just as with the dryers in the 50's and 60's, we might have devices with UV lights in a post 2019 world till everyone forgets just as we did with polio.
That's interesting, wasn't aware. I think the biggest problem with that tech is probably the wavelengths in use will deteriorate fibers. Taht is one of teh challenges touched on in the vid when (Xenex?) mentions they are the only manuf. that 3M certified for use on their masks as they didn't deteriorate the materials. Over time probably that tech/wavelength will propagate and mitigate the issue.
The video doesn't actually go into much detail on this but that is what is being referred to by that statement.
Also, Coronavirus is broken down sufficiently in soap and water alone so at least for COVID there's no advantage of having these lights in the dryer. I guess it possible that maybe some future threat makes it or smth like it relevant.
Old comment but I bought a 1963 RCA Whirlpool set and the dryer actually has a UV/ozone light in it and it does work since things have a unique scent after things are drying in it especially towels.

I would not want to use it on planes (for example) where plastic cabin panels/seats are everywhere. the long term costs will add up over time. poor quality UV-C sterilizers also produce Ozone, which can aggravate the respiratory system
I use LED UV grow lights from Amazon for my carnivores plants. They have the proper light band (white light like the sun) not purple light. The plants are growing fine. It can be extremely useful for Public Toilets, Hair Cutting Saloons etc.
You are right!
Finally a large media company talks about far UVC!
Random question but does anyone know if we get doses of UV-C on a clear sky day?
The video said no. Only A and B
J A the video said it was blocked through clouds
Obviously, it has to penetrate air in order to work. The only mentioned blockage was by clouds (liquid water droplets).
Yesssssssssss
If you are really interested, read up on the ozone layer and what it does. I’m sure that some uvc light would reach the earth around the poles during times of ozone holes.
6:11 i thought it was my notification sounds -.-
uv street lamps are no mistake and We need more of them if we want a safer future
Thank you for the information
So what stock do we buy to invest in ultraviolet??!
1 week before the pandemic, I had submitted a patent application which included UV Sterilization. Its a full factory design aimed to be an antibacterial, antimicrobial facility. The facility is useful as a new form of processing center for most industries. A brief overview has been sent to 3 political leaders for 3 nations. I hope my design influences a safer workplace in the processing sector, and ultimately everywhere.
HAVE YOU APPLIED FOR A GRANT??
@@alz123alz Unfortunately I haven't been able to reach anyone at the BDC but it should gain popularity once reviewed in detail.
Interesting information. It's new to me. Don't forget all public bathrooms, stores, groceries, and malls too.
Thank You very much for NOT HAVING epilepsy warning
It adds energy to the chemicals present. It doesn't add or break bonds, it just adds energy and then adding or breaking happens. Nuance, yes, but... Let's not treat people like idiots.
It doesn't add or break bonds...but adding or breaking happens!!!....Yeah "idiot" is the keyword here!
You know a lot people don't get it. They just simplified things.
5:00 anyone know what the make/model/name of that device is?
It's a Hoshitoshi 2000
@SHÆNISY thanks but I'm talking about the hand-held one
Are three factors that influence how efficient is UV light for dezinfectings, wave length (witch you cover), intensity or luminosity and duration or time.
Is it possible to have ultraviolet rays irradiated inside a box with fans pumping air into and out of the box?
Contaminated air is pumped into the box, sterilized by the UV rays, then pumped out of the box to the room where the box is located.
The advantage are:
1. people can safely be in the same room with the box without the risk of being exposed to harmful ultraviolet light.
2. you can use the air-conditioner normally without worrying about temperature or circulation of air.
3. you can safely be in the room without the risk of getting infected by COVID-19 or other airborne viruses.
The air inside the room is constantly sterilized by the box.
The box should be small, preferably portable.
Such a box does not sterilize surfaces, only the air inside a room. Surfaces should be sterilized normally with desinfectant and cloth.
Right now there is no way to safely sterilize the air inside a room. You have to open the windows to ensure good circulation of air. But during the winter and summer you need to close the windows and use the air-conditioner to have an ameniable temperature inside the room.
Most air-conditioners simply recirculate the existing air inside the room, instead of pumping clean air from outdoors.
If someone in the room is infected and shedding viruses into the air, the air gets more and more contaminated.
But a UV box that sterilizes the air while allowing the presence of people and the use of air-conditioner could be the solution.
Absolutely that's possible. see my post up top
very much informative and pertinent to the current circumstances of coronavirus.
Is it just me that has a stress response to seeing crowds of people in this and other videos???
New industry: calibrating these new UV light machines
And how are you generating the UVC light from the bulb, there must be a gas of some sort much like the fluorescent bulbs ?
Is it a safe to handle during the manufacturing process, then later to dispose off these "burnt-out" bulbs at different consumer level to eventually, may be recycling?
This is what Trump talked about, and you all mocked him.
OMG!
This is some Star trek stuff here!
Scanners and warp drive won't be far behind!
Current understanding of physics does not allow humans to travel faster than light. Sorry I hate to be that guy.
@@zaltmanbleroze True, but we can still go faster then we do now!
zaltmanbleroze the mainstream version. Look up David Adair

The ozone (O3) created by UV-C is damaging to rubbers and some plastics. Even small amounts can cause very premature cracking and discoloration. Repair or replacement of these items may become costly and time consuming.
Texas needs this!
Last time I was this early, Coronavirus was still in Wuhan.
🤣🤣🤣
What r companies that manufacture those machines? Might as well invest
They have been using it for quite sometime... Google it.
Optec International $OPTI
Remember a name that will be making waves soon, a company named VYST Corporation. A small furniture company in Worcester, MA and they have been approved by the FDA already for their RX3000 UV light system. Currently it’s been listed on the NY stock exchange under the ticker symbol $VYST and is slowly gaining momentum. Get in now and be a part of something that will be the future soon! 👋🏼✊🏼
We will definitely be requiring it more during the winter months.
