I would love some way down the road if you could consider reading Boudica by Manda Scott Jimmy. I think you would really resonate with that. And it would be something you and Alan could meet halfway on :) Hippie druidic stuff (GRRM dream sequences adjecent) and Roman history. Beautiful quartet of books with prose very similar to Hobb I think.

    Notes:
I immensely preferred A column of fire to pillars of the earth. Maybe you’d consider giving it a try? It’s a big book.
Since you liked Cloud Atlas, maybe you would like Cloud Cuckoo Land. It follows a fictional Ancient Greek classic through the centuries and has a wonderful autistic character.
Ficciones by Borges is fantastic. I would highly recommend. The man was translating Shakespeare into Spanish in middle school.
Still waiting for you to read An Artist of the Floating World.
Reading Lord of Emperors right now and love it. Still probably prefer Under Heaven but this is pretty great. Under Heaven was my book of the year last year.

Honestly in thinking about it, I would say the second Otherland book is one of my least favorites of Tad's out of what I have read so far (still need to get to Bobby Dollar) with Stone of Farewell second despite me thinking Otherland might be his best series. Like you I think it's too tangential, though some of that stuff is important moving on, and almost felt like a "holding pattern" despite doing some wild ideas like the Wizard of Oz world. Mountain of Black Glass is a huge step up because Ancient Troy is a cool world setting and it moves a bunch of plots forward by the end and yes unites some of the threads in place for a wild ride of a final book.
Also, I think you will be pleased with the Last King characters and how they develop. As much as I liked Witchwood Crown the succeeding books have the benefit of just building up on plot threads instead of having to introduce like 15 POVs. IMHO I think Empire of Grass might be his strongest Book 2. Shadowmarch Book 2 is close, though, and has one of my favorite sequences in his novels (when you get to it in a year or so: "Jack of Chains.")
And thank you for doing the channel, Jimmy, yours and others like Johanna and Phillip have convinced me to get back into fantasy/sci-fi after being pretty light on reading it over the years.
