      Never mind your dog lapping up the water the watercress is in, watch s/he doesn't eat the watercress. We have four Shih-Tzu's and they LOVE watercress, they go crazy whenever I make a salad sandwich. They love salads (Tomato, Cheese, Watercress, cucumber), they come running into the kitchen every time they hear the fridge door opening as they know what's going to happen

    So you could keep it in the same bucket, just add fresh water every day or so , and it will grow. Is that correct? Incidentally, I watched a TV program ,that had two runners. Before these people went on a run, one had watercress, the other didn't. When they came back from the run , they're blood was checked. The guy with no watercress had jagged oxidize cells, the guy who ate watercress had smooth protected cells

      That is a shame. Interesting though. This is the worst year I've ever had for seeds germinating. Most of my gardening friends have said so too. Have you heard that also where you live? Only about 5% of all the 40 kinds of seeds I planted this year germinated, compared to about 60-70% in previous years. I don't know whether or not to be worried or put it down to just being 'one of those' years!

      Flushing with fresh water (ideally not tap water) as often as possible will oxygenate the watercress which will help it to grow much better and the leaves ought to become green again. I'd say twice a week minium but every day if you can. All the best! 🌿🤗

    Any tips for dealing with mosquitoes? Any standing water seems to attract a swarm of them from may to as late as early november

    • @robsdiscovery
      @robsdiscovery  Год назад

      I'd love to be able to answer your question but I'm not sure what to say. I've not had a problem with mosquito larvae in my watercress 'beds'. It could be because there're not too many of them in this area, or because the water is flowing just enough to discourage them from laying. It may be the frogs who live near the tubs that are feeding on the larvae or perhaps the herbs growing nearby that repel them. Or maybe all those things! Having said I've never had a problem with them they'll probably be everywhere this year! What about covering whichever growing container you choose to use with mosquito netting? Or changing the water frequently enough so that it's not standing? Or both? Is indoors an option for you?

    • @deathpyre42
      @deathpyre42 Год назад

      @@robsdiscovery So, it's not quite the larvae that are the problem. The adults seem to be attracted to any moist place (like a garden) in search of a spot to lay their eggs. Herbs seem like a good solution though. What kinds seem to have the best effect on insects? I tried mint, shiso, rosemary, basil and lemongrass so far and nothing's repelled them yet. Granted they were all delicious (well except for the cat pee... but hey it's all natural fertilizer) And indoor growing would probably get on my roommates' nerves since the place is already pretty cramped and we've had mold issues in the past.

    What about nutrients?

    • @robsdiscovery
      @robsdiscovery  5 лет назад +2

      Watercress gets all the nutrients it needs from the water and the rest is done by photosynthesis. Water contains a surprisingly high level of nutrients, which of course varies hugely depending on its source. But even so, most water sources contain more than enough for this incredibly undemanding, self-sufficient plant.
