For anyone thinking of doing this, spanning to the outside edge of the shipping container is the proper but more expensive way since the tops of shipping containers are crowned and water would flow back into your mid-space. However, most people think the top of the shipping containers could then be used for storage, but they cannot take much weight and will buckle should you attempt to store things up there. If you don't believe me, try walking around on a shipping container roof; it's like standing on a car roof or hood as a kid.
