Devadoothan has gone flop because of poor marketing and branding... I remember watching this movie on its first week of release. I clearly remember, this movie was released as Comedy movie prior to the release. Because that year (2000), most of the hit movies were comedy ones. It was released on eve of Christmas and we all gone in that festive mood, only to realise its not a comedy movie, rather horror movie. Then within a week, the posters changed calling the movie as Musical thriller, genre unheard then... Horror has a niche crowd of its own. Untill then, horror movies means female yakshis haunting people. So this movie was ahead with no real Yakshi in white saree on screen, rather it was a Male virtual ghost... so it didn't attracted much of Horro fans then... and those who went to theaters expecting a comedy movie, came out disappointed, thus spreading a negative publicity
