Some of the NWN1 persistent worlds were amazing, and how I got good at RP in the first place. The golden days of NWN1 will always hold a very special place in my heart.
I'm really hoping for great things to come out of the enhanced edition!

The main rp servers from nwn1 I played were
Arelith (which I had fun with, but wasn't impressed with the RP of at the time, though it's been many years, so I can't speak for the current community)
Erithorn's Might (an original setting where I really learned what good RP was, and how to do it)
      and
Ravenloft: Prisoners of the Mist (which I had a lot of fun with before I seem to have walked blindly into some OOC drama)
& of course some dabbling in other servers (both nwn1 & 2, including some action & pvp servers like Battle of the Dragons, which beats the pants off of other MOBAs because it was built off of an RPG rather than RTS engine)

Neverwinter Nights is still one of my favourite games of all time, my dad got me into it when I was very young before I could even consistently read. He set me up on a persistent world server and gave me a macro that I could click that would essentially say "This character is being played by a 6 year old kid that is still learning to read, please forgive any inappropriate roleplaying behaviour", he let me play for a couple hours, and when he came back I was packed to the brim with legendary items and weapons because random people just gave me stuff.

Neverwinter Nights, Baldur`s Gate, Icewind Dale, Pool of Radiance, Eye of the Beholder, Planescape Torment, The Ultima games ; These are I think the best examples of what video game RPGs can be. Fantastic games, and I`m glad to see they`re seeing a resurgence. Deadfire, anybody?

This game introduced me to D&D back in 2001 or something, though I didn't start playing tabletop until much later. I actually built my full first PC for it, before then it was simple upgrades. I used to create worlds, it was easy and fun. Thanks to the new remaster, I have been considering making my Velondale/Rhelik campaign in it, though I don't know anyone to hand it off to or run it for. Glad the game has come back briefly into the spotlight. Its a ton of fun if you can get over the old school graphics. The power in the toolset is pretty incredible.

I have so many fond memories of NwN; used to play on the Imperial Dusk server. It was the first time I encountered actual online role playing and it was great. Other games came and went, but I went back to NwN again and again for many years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I played NWN a ton back when it released. My favorite memory of playing was playing co-op through all the official campaigns and the better modules with my best friend. I played a 1/2 orc fighter and he played a dwarven cleric. It was a great time! Oddly enough we never tried the persistent worlds but that sounds like a lot of fun.

Neverwinter nights was 100% my jam. Lady Aribeth made me consider paladins and now they're my favorite class.
But I kind of regret that I never got into online play. When it first came out I had a dial up modem and an ancient computer that couldn't handle it, and then once I had a decent computer, just, felt no one would have been there. But even singleplayer NWN has a great story mode. I replay it basically every couple years.

So nostalgic. I really enjoy stories from people who really were passionated in something, especially in games. So great game. I played it so much when i was a kid and i was so glad that the online is alive again. Really enjoyed your great stories about those epic days. Dropped a nostalgic tear.)

Best CRPG I’ve played. So many subtle innovations on the software side that added to the immersion for both the single-player campaigns and DM-led online groups or persistent world servers. I remember seeing a demo from an E3 type game convention pre-release where they showed dynamic shadows by showing how the shadow of a guard atop a wall moved over the ground below him according to where he was relative to the stationary torch also on the battlements. They spent most of the time after the in game clip not talking directly about the technology (which was pretty revolutionary at the time) but rather about the cool emergent gaming and RP applications of it - a player doesn’t need to be told there’s a guard up there or even see the guard, if they’re observant they’ll notice there’s a moving shadow and understand there’s something patrolling. I think that approach - a priority focus on great game experiences for the player - was key to a lot of Bioware’s early successes and the endurance of their early releases.

Very, very well said. I remember being completely wowed by the "second story" elements of the game. The fact that buildings and trees would extend up past the camera. It gave the game such an immersive, expansive feel.

So I picked up the enhanced edition on steam, after not having played my boxed diamond edition since around 2009. I was amazed to see that Arelith was still going strong, that was the last thing I did online 10 years ago, looking forward to checking it out again.

Wow. I knew the technology and scope of the game was amazing for its time, and in some ways still seems to be. But those stories are way beyond what I knew. The game came out during high school and I didn't have a job, and we weren't exactly bringing home much money then. College I couldn't play due to time and the summers were full of a lot of IT working and consulting jobs. Now I'm sad to see what I missed! I picked up the game recently and will be looking into this Thain place for sure. Maybe even looking into the mod/DM tools, who knows.

Neverwinter Nights was literally my entire childhood. It came for me during a dark time in my life, full of divorce, teenage angst, and depression, and very likely saved my life. It started initially by dragging me in with its base content, but when my father introduced more of it to me, the game became how we bonded. It was my introduction to pen and paper, reading, writing, adventure design, and more.
I played the game from the age of ten years old, all the way to current times through the multiplayer which still, to this day has active servers. Now, with the Enhanced Edition coming out and having written and scripted for so long, I'm still playing it on the Enhanced Edition. I'm even putting out videos on the game roleplaying the character as they travel through the world, and having an absolute blast. ruclips.net/video/7amQ7dHU3Uc/видео.html
Fantastic video, and would absolutely love to hear more of your thoughts on older games! You've earned yourself a sub, sir.

Neverwinter Nights came along at just the right time to satisfy me with single-player content when I was unable to find an in-person D&D group. I wish I would have tried online multiplayer, but I focused on both professional and fan-made single-player adventures and mods. Good times!
Thank you for bringing back fond memories and encouraging me to take a look at the new version of the game as well as possibly giving multiplayer a try. How I wish someone would create a Neverwinter Nights type game for the 5th Edition ruleset. It would be glorious!
I wonder if you, or whoever reads this, will get this reference: “Please don’t squeeze the Sharwyn!” That relies on knowledge of both Neverwinter Nights and the old Charmin toilet paper TV commercials with Mr. Whipple. I couldn’t resist throwing that out there. .Sorry, I am ancient!
Say, I wonder if the old modules will work with the new version? I remember one called Darkness Over Daggerford. Anyway, it would be awesome if the new version is compatible with the oldies but goodies that are out there. Cheers, Happy Gaming, Hurrah and Huzzah!

aFistfulofDice -- That's good news, everyone! Awesome news, in fact. Thank you for letting me know. I was checking their website, and I got the impression that most of the old Neverwinter Vault stuff should work. Boy, I really wish we had a 5th Edition game like Neverwinter Nights!

Played a lot of campaign back in a day, and still do (Underdark is just brutal) mostly played as unarmed bard/ranger. weak, nerve wracking, but oh-so-satisfying. Spent a lot of time in character creation page dedicated to bio, since I had to explain to the game why the character in all campaigns is the same but nobody remembers him (The answer was: Shadow Realm's magic)

Great story! Neverwinter Nights sounds a bit like EVE Online to me in that it's very player and community driven.
However, in my experience the game itself is kind of irrelevant. I have been playing on multiple WoW TBC servers on and off for a looong time. A lot of it is the same people going back and forth to different servers so you are bound to run into someone you knew from years ago. Heck, I ran in to my old guild master from 2008 on a recent server. Anyways, when I ran across one of those old friends we'd go on skype/ventrilo/teamspeak/discord/whatever and just talk. The discussion was always about people and rarely about the game itself. It's the person you remember and not that one time you did 3.2k DPS on Gorefiend in Black Temple.
A little recomendation for you lot who want to get a RPG fix between DnD sessions: Divinity Original Sin 2. It's a truly great game.
EDIT: When is the next Provokers :D? Love your content Matt.
