Ever since I saved an old star key blank catalog from the 8o's that had a substitute key blank list, I just keep adding to that list with these key blank tidbits. Thanks for another one PJ. 🤓🤓👍👍 #lockboss
We used to run into that years ago with the X7 x 123s a little longer but the head shape different and then the x210 where you can bypass both of those other keys and just use that one the x210 great thing to share thanks son for thinking of those other people to learn so they don't have to go through what we went through LOL #lockfather
Jason from SE lock and Key had an other interesting video about key blanks. The angle of the tip might not be perfectly the same, so he had a mailbox key with a no cut on the last position towards the tip, and as the blank had a different tip angle, that key copy could not lift the wafer enough to operate the lock.
I had this issue when one of the program heads at the college came to me asking for duplicate sets made for their new storage container locks. I didn't catch the problem until I went to try the keys on the lock. I had to grind down both sides of the bow on twelve keys. So far, no complaints.
There's a series of rather nice Stanley 24/7 series padlocks that use a modified version of the SC-4 key that lacks the back shoulder so that the key will fit deeper, past the anti-drill plate. Ilco makes a special 1145AST (ST4) blank but a #LockBoss can grind down a standard SC4 (1145A) or, if you repin the lock to use only 5 pins, SC-1.
🌵🇨🇦 Very interesting. I took my gas cap key to a locksmith to get a copy. They tried a Ilco 1642, it fits, but it does not work. Maybe I can rescue this one after all. #LockBoss 🇨🇦🌵
Good video on fic1 and fic3. I remember when the Honda 3000 series code. Hd90 the ign lock push in to remove and the head would bottom on ign.thank u James estep #lockboss#lockboss
I was code cutting LFIC keys the other day with my handy pak-a-punch and for had both the control and operation codes out. I kept mixing up the number for the key I was making and went through three keys not working at all until I realized what I was doing. So much for being a #Lockboss
The next level of this hackery is to use a normal sc4 blank, grind the shoulders back a bit and create the notch for the lfic control pin... Probably not professional but the milling is deep enough past the original shoulder... #lockboss
Good reminder to double-check the basic info for the key blanks. We all hold our breath when we copy a key for a customer without the lock present to verify that it works. Great video, PJ! #AccessLockKeyLLC #HaulinBrass #LockBoss
I remember Ace Hardware cutting Honda keys on the short neck key. I made lots of money in their parking lot correcting their similar mistake. #Lockboss
I’ve run into the millings being too short on an automotive key where I substituted a smaller head key so it would go in a magnetic box. I, like you, checked the cuts and it was dead on…It took a minute or two for me to see the forest in the trees so to speak and realize it was not stopping on the tip. #LockBoss
#Lockboss Was looking at the notch in back of the stop and thought it was that. Thought it was some kind of ward. Didnt think about the bow being in the way 👍
Nice tip -- Sometimes it's the simplest things that are most fundamental. That's a good #lockboss mental checklist when duplicating: profile, shoulder/tip stop, bow clearance, sufficient length of millings.
You definitely need to think outside the box with some key. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. Bench grinder here I come! Lol #lockboss
Where there's a cylinder plate guard on a door this can render some keys to be more difficult to use. High security brands always make their blanks more elongated to avoid this issue, and so do car keys in general.
I hate grinding key's but there is times where it has to be done. however as much as I like to stand behind every key I cut. if I have to go grinding on it without the lock. I will not guarantee that key. good stuff as usual.
Thanks PJ, that is good for every #lockboss to remember. Not every key we think is the same, sometimes you have to substitute and make adjustments to make it right

Thanks for key blank tips
I hate when this happens. Have been bitten by this more than once. Thanks for sharing PJ! #lockboss
recessed cylinder with molded plastic bezel around it. Also more difficult to pick. #lockboss
Depending on the size of the bow , you can use the key duplicator to grind off the excess material , its also a bit more stable. #lockboss

What happens when this scenario happens on a kw1 key
It would be a kw10 using the bottom shoulder-PJ
@@clksupplies thank you
That’s interesting. I had that happen on the neutered bow KW1 / KW10 and the SC1 / SC4. Great #LockBoss tip PJ!
Great info. #lockboss
