  • At his seminar last weekend, Enson Inoue explained to the group about his decision to demote himself from black belt to purple belt, after feeling modern Jiu Jitsu has passed him by. This was a great perspective discussion for everyone that trains for a lifetime.

Is this the guy that has that hilarious story about just starting BJJ, and telling his friends all about it (excited) then they get into a fender bender and he literally has to use BJJ on like Day 3 or something? I remember hearing the story and it was funny as shit.

Once a blackbelt everytime a black you get a black belt because you reached a point in your journey where you deserve it. People mixing up being in shape and being experienced
Sometimes you experience will be enough to win against strong people but sometimes not, physical shape is a state where you can’t all your life have kontroll of it you getting old or sick or what ever but your way where you get trough is yours. It’s like you will take away all the black belts from old bjj proffesors because they can’t move or fight anymore nonsense.
For physical skill and knowledge level you getting medal’s
For your journey you getting Belts and it includes more then just being a good athlete

The problem is with putting too much emphasis on the belt color. There are blue belts today who know more than black belts in the 90s. Wrestling and boxing don't use belts and are arguably more effective for fighting.

I always said belts dont matter. Its the experience you gain and being able to perform & teach correctly is what it boils down to. Black belts in the 90s are way different from todays world of grappling. In the 90s it was more self defense & today is sport/whos better prepared. Im 41 and thankfully I can still hang with the 20 year olds but its very hard & tough on the body let alone the performance. I always said real BJJ is for fighting but it evolves like anything else.

the requirements for blue belt have gone way up since the originally conceived "self defense" standard.
