I was a scout leader for ten years and I have made rope by hand many, many times.I have often thought about what you have done. I guess that's the difference; I thought it; you did it. Great stuff. Thanks for the vid.
can you test how much weight the rope can hold?
Absolutely you need to do a strength test!
you'd need quite a contraption to strain that rope to failure but it would be interesting.
Yeah
Benjamin Pas-VanCauwenberge a
Russel Walker
Not really.
Tie the plastic rope to a higher quality rope, pull that through a pulley where you tie it to a weight. Keep adding weights until it breaks.
You can also use a special clamp if you're not sure a knot will hold (although, a sheet bend should do fine).
It's so weird watching him now... RIP

PLEASE!!!! Grant, please strength test the soda ropes in a unique way to see what kind of weight they can hold, or pull, with different gauges of ropes you made. lift weights, tow a car, swing from it like a vine, etc.

You should do a tensile strength test on the 3 different ropes!
Watch until the end
COMMENTINLY I meant a semi measurable tensile test, at least on the first rope.
I want to see this as well! Very curious about how much the strength scales up when you add another layer.
Agreed

strength test till it breaks.
Yea, pls do it. Use dynamometer and compare its strength with normal rope's strength so we will see if it is usefull
and if possible i think making a ladder would be cool
I wonder if it is possible to tow a vehicle using homemade plastic rope
strength test.
Chris McCormick I was just about to comment this
i dont see why it shouldnt, the last rope he made would be enough for a small/middle car
Chris McCormick the string itself is strong enough to pull a small car, so the rope should be more than strong enough.

this would actually be great for recycling old soda bottles
its not very practical because UV light breaks down plastic. so if you left it outside long enough it would eventually turn brittle and break. but then again everything breaks down eventually so maybe it could be used for something.
You right
Yeah
Please show us how much weight these ropes can hold!!!

have you thought about a "can it rope" series?
Dakota Allison wow that would be awesome
Dakota Allison great idea!
Mythical team should patent that
cool idea
Dakota Allison "can it rope-human flesh"
Now that's a new form of recycling; instead of throwing our bottles into dumps, streets, rivers and the like, we should repurpose them into rope. This way we'd also cut down not only on the litter and pollution, but also how much plant material we normally use to make rope.
Since it's really strong, the plastic it could also be used for leashes and stuff related to that kind of thing. I don't know why that was my first idea.
If it can hold my weight, I can hang myself with it
plastic is absolutely not suitable for clothing.. please think..how is it not gonna rip your skin apart, and how is it gonna keep you warm?
Willem - treat it with heat to soften any edges, and by insulating body heat?
SilverDirt Draws please, please..just hold a piece of plastic on your arm for 5 minutes then talk to me again about this.

Make rope using three different colors, that way we can easily see the pattern and gage the effectiveness of the machine.
its as effective as it gets this is the same way companys make rope only on a much larger scale.
Ethan Vayman he's got a video where he does that. It's part of a series of videos about building and using this machine
Barry Fields oh alright, nvm then I'm gonna go watch the vid😂
He already did
Make a rope with fuses. That would be awesome to see burning
ColorBlind Vegan thats kind of dangerous since the rope winding procces creates a lot of friction. it might catch fire or even explode
Alex V.D.H.
It probably won't be that dangerous if it caught fire.
Alex V.D.H. no it is a fuse
+FernTheRUclipsr Fuse contains its own oxidizer, making it very hard to put out. It would be very dangerous.
maybe if you did it at a slower rate?

I have an idea for a project you could make a hand gun made with wood which uses the home made cap gun powder which you made in the thunder cap video to shoot ammunition by the way i love your content they are amazing
Vedh Prashob that would be so cool
...so you are making very weak versions of guns we had 400 years ago? The only innovation you have is a quartz piezo sparker.
The King of Random
If you decide to make more of this stuff, make a separate guide, and wax the inside of the holes. The reason it wasn't sliding properly was because of the bare wood against plastic edges. Thread is round already, but the plastic "thread" is square/rectangular, and it was catching on the wood. :)

ok now lets remake all the ropes and test the strengths of each and I would like to see you make and test a homemade rope of a diffrent unlikely material and test the strenth of that in the video. cheers from the Dunlavy's
That's what I was thinking.
Measure the weight strength on the string, cordage and rope.
I know it's a bit late, but... I got a weird request: Paper Mache. I have my own recipe; 1/2 liter of water, 4 table spoons of sugar, 2 tablespoons of all purpose flour, paper bond, make paste-soaked paper pulp with it and compress it. leave it to dry for several days or bake it to extract moisture. This thing is as strong OR stronger than wood. Don't trust me? Try it. Once dry this thing was able to withstand a machete blade to it. And if you add baking soda to it, it fireproofs it to a certain extent (it's already quite hard to set fire to, the baking soda makes it almost impossible). I did the tests by mystelf many years ago.
Uhhh... I am not sure anymore. If 4 tbsp of sugar vs 2 tbsp of flour of vice-versa. It's been quite awhile, but trust me. This thing is quite strong if you did it right. Paper paste with the paper mache paste is quite strong. Oh, and I have worked with this material for around a decade and have a whole body of work online to prove it.
hmm i did paper mache for 2 yrs but was not interested in this....
A. C. Rusinov sounds similar to pykrete, but solid at room temp! Cool
Landon Sarrett I have no idea what pycrete is. once dry this thing is basically like wood or stronger, but it is a bit sensitive to water. as it's still paper after all.
This man has truly changed my life and so many others rip one of my role models ❤️
Anyone else's RUclips just keeps recommending Grants Vids😩❤️

What’s about Primitive technology?
I have a question: Can you make the string back into the bottle
yeah do that
technically yes efficient no easy probably not and u would need heat to melt it together
technically yes efficient no easy probably not and u would need heat to melt it together
Don Wong duh
That's a fine question. I'd say you have to weave them like a wicker basket. and then, using temperature, melt them together as Jz said. Or use clay, but you need to dry and glaze it as well. Anyways, yes, I think this possible, but the bottle will definitely look different.
Rest in peace King, long live your creations...
What is very impressive is that the final piece, well, even the intermediates, they are not coiled like the individual strings are. Very impressive.
You should try comparing the rope with store bought rope
i love that idea
Randy Hinds he needed content for another video
Jacob Robinson yeah
weight test them and see what rating they would have at certain widths in comparison to nylon rope and 550 cord
Jacob Robinson use it to tow a truck Texas style
For making longer ropes you should attach a cord on the guide so if it doesn't move you can pull it from afar and continue making the rope without having to move.
Also, you might want to wax your traveling block.
Or put down a bit of sheet metal, even something from soda cans would probably work to make it smoother.
He was genuinely so curious about everything and experimented.
He was my first favourite youtuber loved all his creative inventions. May he rest in peace
Hey guys, I'm just getting into your comments now. Late night flying back from NYC. What's all going on today?

This man was brilliant. His idea's will live on in all of us.
You should do a tensile tensile on each rope you made starting with just the bottle string.

If youtubers were teachers, he will be the school's best science teacher or even one of the survival subjects in school
Whitney Loh he is so cool I wish I met him
Genesis Loh science teacher is easily vsause and survival teacher would be primitive technology

True man
I dont know how this guy made me interested in rope
Unluckily he is dead :( He was the King
This guy is the ACTUAL king of random.
duh
You should test the max tension each rope you've made can take, that would be interesting to know :)
looks like I'm not the only one who thought of this lol.
test the strength of the final rope. do a tension test
First video I ever watched of him.
It's 5:30 a.m. and I'm confident this is the coolest thing I'll see all day.
See if you are able to pull a car with that rope. Test it's toughness.
Grant how about some controlled test to determine the stretch and breaking point of this plastic rope?
This could be great for making hammocks , floating chairs , even outdoor mats
Anything he ever created, even if seeming completely random or crazy, always ended up beautiful, and he will always be remembered.
Why not give this rope a stretch test? Such that we can know how much tension it can take
can you do a weight test of all the ropes u made so far?
Chances are it can hold multiple times as much weight as the combined total weights held of the original strings unbidden
The man, the myth, the legend. TKOR 💗
Absolutely GENIUS!
Do a video using a tension measuring device to see how much load the plastic rope can handle before it breaks.
m Kusch
I think that is a great idea! You are amazing!!!!😆
" see how much load the plastic rope can handle " "how much load the plastic rope can" "much load the plastic rope" "load the plastic " *LOAD*
love to see the tensile strength of all the ropes ya made!!!
8:15 garden pruners work a lot better when cutting such a thick plastic rope.. I made this rope machine, probably the one and only tkor project I actually genuinely tried to make at home and it did wonders, pretty cool machine.
They need to make more vids like this ones, to actually show us useful things
Try doing weight tests for the plastic string, the ropes, and previously made ones.
Try to tie that rope to an end of a car and tie another end to another end of a car, to test it's durability
Imagine if the bumpers / tow hooks break off because it's so durable.
David G. bumper would obviously ripoff but not tow hook ,i mean they have that one job
Still, it could happen.
Then he should use a tow took on one end of the bumper to the other
Please do that, please, please!
His vids still help today I appreciate him and wish he was still around
You and similar guys like you make most of us with 13 years of schooling and degrees later on- ashamed as to what contribution we have made to the world. Maybe the best we can do to honour your name is to take these ideas given free and made with lots of love, to craftsmen who can convert these to liberating modes of employment generation. Greetings from Srilanka- Keep smiling and guiding from the Great Beyond
Mr. Thompson you should try to use nerds rope or the really long licorice pieces! That'd be a funny project
it would probably break before he even got it on the rope machine
Blaze Origins oh yeah I know haha. It's candy it doesn't have structural integrity
If you were to apply heat to the rope, could you melt the plastic so it would be smooth and easier to handle? Would the rope become stronger because it is melted together or no?
I thought he could melt the ends so that they don't come apart
Wouldn't remain flexible if you did that.
Brad Campbell no weaker. Thin sheet has oriented molecules that increase tensile strength. Melting destroys orientation.
Brad Campbell how would you be able to 'weld" the ends of the string together so you could make longer ropes?
that would become a pet bottle stick lol
This is literally one of many solutions to cleaning the ocean, just take bottles and make rope, a much needed resource
This is how plastics should be reused ♥️
Imagine this: grant Thompson rope industries. Cool huh?

The implications of a rope that won't degrade in a long term survival situation are beyond my current comprehensive abilities. Thanx.
Another classic example of a question nobody had but an answer we never knew we wanted
Humans are so fun, 2.8 millon people like watching rope being made :D
Yes, when i was small i destroyed my toys just to try understand how they work.
3.25 million now (1/25/2018)
Dextri Promotion 4.5 million now 7/17/19
Make different thicknesses of the soda bottle rope and do weight tests on them to see their durability an practically
I miss you grant I think we all do but thank you for these videos we still have something to remember you with
One of my favorites.
Do this with copper wire and put rubber over it to make it a cable that works!
Like so he can see!
Matthew Levine copper wire is very weak, it's one of those materials that you bend it and it snaps :/
LiquidPringles Pribglr same with plastic and he did that
Then you need to use new wire. Copper becomes brittle when it is work hardened. Copper electrical wire is never hardened, and will always be soft right off of the roll.
Copper may actually be too plastic to work right here. When it bends, it has almost no appreciable spring and immediately enters the plastic deformation part of the force/yield curve. It will probably be too ductile to gather enough tension before it pulls the shuttle forward, twisting the actual rope.
Not only that, but it also snaps when you apply to much tension
Can you use this soda bottle cutter to turn soda cans into aluminium wire?
with a really really sharp knife yes
I mean you can probably cut a soda can with the same knife you'd cut with a plastic bottle. Aluminum cans aren't really as durable as something like solid aluminum
It'd probably dull your knife after a few cans.
Matthew Yare use a ceramic knife
Wouldn't the wire cut his hands?
Thanks for teaching us how to make a homemade noose! Your a big help! :)
I keep being reminded about your passing. You had a big place in my childhood and you will always be in my heart. My prayers go out to your family. Rest easy man.
Hey Grant how about making a metal rope using the same method but with metal cans. Let's see if you can do a strength test of that rope and compare it to the others. Cheers 🍻
See if your think bottle rope can pull a car
Thick*
I would assume no, but maybe 3 of the think ropes together would :D
(3 of the short ones in the thumbnail)
book pages weaved together can do that
+DudeManGuy What is your point? The amount of friction contained in the pages of 2 phonebooks (for example) when they are weaved together is obscene. Doesn't mean a rope can do it.
He truly was and still is the king
