I'm confused. Why did USAID fund media? Why aren't we talking about why USAID is being criticized? If USAID is pure in its mission, why not talk about the actual claims that are criticizing its mission?

The only criticism I've seen is that USAID somehow ended up funding a 'trans' or 'dei' concert. Which, even if true is like dropping a couple pennies to buy goodwill compared to the cost and scope of their medical missions. It sounds more like those dog whistle words are being used to make people think USAID is out there chopping off kid's genitals or otherwise supporting what is ultimately a mythical trans agenda. DEI and Trans stuff are boogeymen, they do not exist in the way that Trump and MAGA pundits claim they do. DEI simply demands that corporations hire qualified people regardless of their traits, be they veterans, old, women or people of color. There isn't a Quota. And trans people just want to live, and not be erased or used as scapegoats.
Media environments in many developing economies is extremely restrictive for independent outlets, often dominated by oligarchs or authoritarian interest groups. USAID grants/programs were, on paper, designed to help ease pressure on such outlets, in turn they often had quite pro-US viewpoints, but then again so many people in such places looked to the US as a beacon of openness, if a somewhat flawed one, hence there was a match. Which exactly why they did these programs to create further goodwill. There is honestly nothing controversial about them. All large states do them

Hey people can argue all they want over American tax dollars letting kids watch sesame street when they couldn't otherwise because even that money can go instead to someone who hates us one way or another. However it really sounds like these kinds of talks led to "let's shut down like, the whole thing. I'm sure there's no risk of pandemics from contained areas. Who is containing those again?"
But, the unforeseen consequence is that ~$2 billion of USAID went to buying excess crops from farmers country wide, but they can't get that money without USAID so it's affecting people back home too.

Nothing was "uncovered"; federal budgets and appropriations are public information and have been available online since the Bush W admin. If Congress wants to add new requirements or alter a program's mission they're always free to do so. This is all just reckless theatrics.

Samantha Power wrote an extraordinary book about genocide years ago. I discovered it at a time when I had been reading about Rwanda. I had not expected to see it rise again in our time associated directly with the U.S. supporting Israel.

People who have been working for USAID need to post information on what they were doing, where, for how long and what their experiences have been and what this action means in their view. Perhaps this will increase understanding of these vital programs, not only for people in need but for keep this issues at bay or eradicating them, but also the deeper geopolitical issues effected by these program. I would be okay with an audit, but this could be done without unilaterally stopping everything. It is never wise to tear down a house while you still live in it.

It's going to have to be a grass root project. The media doesn't do deep dives anymore. The Atlantic and The New Yorker both do deep dives on subjects. Also Frontline on PBS.
For safety reasons in some countries they work in, they can not post stuff like that.

As a former USAID employee, it's tough to watch the former USAID administrator speak on anything after her long silence on Gaza and the West Bank. She did, after all, author a few books, two here noted: "A Problem from Hell - America and the Age of Genocide" and another "The Education of an Idealist." Silence is typically interpreted as tacit approval.

What happens when the US steps away from that?

As I non- American I find this comment section funny. I worked as contractor for USAID and they literally paid me more than 40k USD over the course of one year literally to make PPTs and edit graphs. I mean I am not complaining but it's laughable that you Americans don't know that most of the USAID money goes to contractors and "consultants" like me who get paid to make reports about reports 😂
If you made $40K, which is obviously an entry-level position, you weren't exactly in a role that held any importance in the operation, hence making PPT's and editing images. Not exactly someone with a lot of insight into USAID operations.

There even more concerning and immensely expensive expenditures like 8 million dollars spent by USAID on Sri Lankan journalists to teach them “binary gendered language”. Couldn't these kind of funds be used for education, medical care centers in these nations instead? Or designated to those veterans in the US on the streets? • Efforts to recognize a third gender in Bangladesh’s national census.
• Advocacy for legal gender recognition in Kosovo.

• Other Initiatives: Additional projects that have drawn scrutiny include:
• $6 million to fund tourism in Egypt.

Declassified documents have revealed that USAID was involved in covert operations aimed at destabilizing President Salvador Allende’s government.
According to a report titled “Covert Action in Chile, 1963-1973” from the National Archives, USAID funds were channeled to opposition groups in Chile as part of a broader strategy to prevent Allende’s ascent to power and to undermine his administration once he was elected. The report indicates that the CIA, with directives from the U.S. government, utilized USAID resources to support anti-Allende activities, including funding for political parties and media outlets opposed to Allende’s socialist policies. 
Further evidence of U.S. involvement in Chile during this period is found in declassified documents from the National Security Archive. These documents illustrate the United States’ knowledge of the Chilean military coup d’état led by General Augusto Pinochet to overthrow President Salvador Allende’s Popular Unity government in 1973. They also reveal a line of communication between high-ranking U.S. government officials and Chilean military personnel loyal to General Pinochet. 
These declassified documents provide credible evidence of USAID’s involvement in the U.S. government’s efforts to influence Chilean politics during the early 1970s.

I can tell you that it works. After WWII the US supported my grandparents' generation, the people of defeated (West) Germany (Marshall plan, air bridge to West Berlin, ...) and this helped critically to see the US not as a pure transactional victor of a war but as a country of compassion and freedom. It helped to stabilize Europe and create a reliable partner, not only Germany but the EU as we know it today. I hope that the partners that Samantha mentioned (like the EU, the UN and others (hey Bill Gates!), will step up and step in to show that compassion, caring and democratic values still matter.
Thank you for writing this, it seems everyone has already forgotten about WWII and what it used to be like when America was a global power for humanity.

I am so glad that we have people like Stephen who can use their influence to share critical pieces of these stories since we cannot rely on websites for factual information. I am an instructor of public health at a university in Texas and I am going to share this clip with all of my students as it is an accessible way for people to learn the vital role that USAID plays not just outside of the US but FOR the US and our public health and safety. The fact that the richest man in the world would cut off aid to the poorest people in the world is THE most disgusting thing I can imagine and, in my opinion, is worse than taking a gun and shooting someone. This will kill and otherwise harm unfathomable amounts of people.

I have a little chuckle whenever I see some American pipe up about how they have a president, not a king, when their "totally not a king" has more power than actual kings elsewhere have had in hundreds of years. SCOTUS declaring the president free of accountability is just the cherry on top. As someone who worked in the implementation of some USAID projects in the Dominican Republic shutting it down is just vile. The positive impact in our vulnerable communities was immense. So sad about this.

The reason is because USAID advised and assisted former Soviet republics as they transitioned to market economies and realigned with the west.
One of their priorities was advising in combating wealth extraction by Russian oligarchs. Trump was laundering money for Russian oligarchs and USAID helped advise these nations to combat that wealth extraction and USAID through DoS coordinated with EU banks to disrupt money laundering activities.
It cost Trump money and he has held a grudge ever since, this is vengeance.
