I have had my Fiskars scissors since 1977. I am just sharpening them for the first time. I love the small sharpener. It lets me sharpen the entire blade. My scissors have only ever been used for fabric and they have served me well all these years.
No instructions with small scissor sharpener, thank goodness I found this video.
My sharpener didn't come with instructions and I couldn't find anything on the Fiskar website. This video was much appreciated. Thank you.
Me too that’s been my problem
Thank you for helping me with the correct way to sharpen scissors. Off to buy a table top sharpener right now. I’ve been sewing all my life (71) and never knew this before!!!
Thank you for this! I’ve been freaking out because the scissors we have at work are getting dull and my boss doesn’t want to spend any money to get them sharpened. Then today while cleaning the dust out of a back corner shelf I found a scissors sharpener! I had no idea how to use it but at least I found it, so now after watching your video I can try sharpening our scissors on my next shift.
This video is EXACTLY what I was looking for, thank you! Very helpful in deciding what kind of sharpener to get. Good detailed and honest review about the pros and cons, AND it shows me how to use it. Thank you thank you thank you
thank you for sharing how to use the scissor sharpener I have tried to sharpen scissors with it and always gave up because It never worked for me but I saw your video and I finally got the sharpener to work and I am so happy
+Michael Smith That's awesome to hear. I'm glad it's helped you out.
@@2howlingmonkeys71 Thanks. I am surprised that these Fiskars sharpeners don't come with any illustration how to use them. After watching this video it makes perfect sense.
Just a great instruction!! Had these this , didn’t know how to use it. Thank you you are great at explaining everything!!
I don’t put both blades through the smaller sharpener at the same time, because you’re right. They catch when you close them & don’t come through smoothly. I put one blade through at a time - top then bottom. Each comes through very smoothly with a nice result.
You're talking about the smaller sharpener? I agree. It was made to sharpen both sides at one time, but doesn't work right. Thank you for your suggestion.
I was about to buy new scissors and decided to look on utube how to sharpen them and I came across your video. Will buy. Thanks a million times for sharing.I have a lot of scissors. I am also looking how to sharpen pinking shears.
You're welcome. I'm glad it helped. I don't think that you can sharpen pinking shears.
Thank you so much for this helpful video review. I was about to trash couple of my blunt scissors, but decided to check out youtube, and found this video. I have purchased a fiskar's tabletop universal scissor sharpener, hopefully it will bring the scissors back to life. Cheers.
Awesome! I'm sure it'll make your scissors work wonderfully.
very nice gal! I use and sell the 8" and you hit it. Thanks for the idea about the better sharpener. I also use the rotary, on self healing mats.
The suggestion to limit fabric scissors to use only on fabrics is spot on, if you want it to last almost indefinitely.
Thank you Andy. I'm glad you spoke up, because not many people understand how important that is. I appreciate your input.
Thanx for this clear video. I found the smaller sharpener in a drawer. The picture example on the product is not great. I set the sharpener on the counter with my hand on the edge. It worked better this time. I don't sew. Im just using them on an inexpensive general use pair.
Works well.
Thanks so much for all your information. I have never used any scissor sharpener and when I went to purchase one on Amazon there were no instructional videos. I really hated always buying more scissors! I am going to give it a try!
+Jalyne Fidler Wonderful! I'm happy to hear that. BTW, cute dog!
Thanks for sharing!!!!
Thank you for this video. I just bought a Fiskar's Tabletop sharpener (in UK) and there were no instructions, just one small photo. Without your video I would have been pushing scissors in back and forth. So, again, thank you.
I'm so glad to hear that you were able to correct that in time. :^)
Your video was a great help thank you!
Ugh. I've been sharpening my Fiskars that came with the small sharpener wrong since I got them years ago. Thanks from another Kristina. 😺
Very interesting! I came across the smaller one the other day among my large craft stash but I also recognise the larger sharpener (I'm sure I have that too). Need to hunt around in my large stashes. Thank you for the demo and advice. Katie from Bonnie Scotland.
They come in handy.
Good review, clear explanation - thanks.
The Fiskars sharpeners tend to be nice because they're ceramic rod and not too overly aggressive. (Last thing you'd want around scissors is one of those carbide sharpeners.) And the other way around that normally doesn't work allows for sharpening the odd set of left-handed scissors - although most people don't have or need those.
Other than that, Durasharp makes some nice (ceramic-alloy?) titanium scissors for under $30 - and then you may not need to use the sharpener at all with those. (The sharpener still comes in handy for restoring any old scissors laying around though.) In my experience the titanium scissors don't rust or dull, short of doing something that would purposely ruin scissors anyways. Obviously they're not pruners, wire cutters, nor tin snips.
Is the direction you put the scissors into the sharpener the same for left handed scissors?
I felt so stupid looking at the sharpener and having no idea what I was supposed to do with it. Thank you
LOL. No worries. We all have moments like that.
Thanks for the video! Have you got any tips on sharpening curved scissors? Large and small
Ok! Dropped mine and it fell apart! I know where the rollers go but, what about the 2 thin longer rods? Im in trouble.....please help!
Thank you for this great video! Mine fell apart and now I am trying to put it back together and I cannot figure out how the longer, thinner bars are supposed to fit in there. Do you have any images of how they are supposed to be seated? Thank you!
I had someone ask this same question in one of the comments below. I told them how to put it back together. You might want to take a look. It's one of the earlier comments. It should help you. :)
Thank you for this video. My mom bought a knife sharpener and it also has the scissors sharpener. I had no idea how to use it and i made my scissors even worse..
The product description for the Fiskars' tabletop sharpener says not for use "Not for use with left-handed scissors, pinking shears, scissors with serrated blades or razor-edge scissors". Have you found that it works well with your razor-edge scissors? Do you know why the manufacturer would discourage use with the razor-edge type?
These are expensive scissors that were sharpened extra sharp and hardened. They are technically not supposed to dull. If they are sharp, then stay away from sharpening them. However, if you've used them so much that they are now dull, then you can sharpen them to improve them. They will never get to be as sharp is they were originally, but they will be better than how they ended up. If you sharpen them while they are still sharp, then you will make them duller. I hope that helps.
Very helpful, thanks!
Thank you! Can you tell me how to match thread to fabric?
do you use this on other brands of scissors...gingher? kai?
Hi, I live this video. Have you ever sharpened the Fiskars Titanium with the litter serrations on them?
Thank you this was a very informative video!
Great! I'm glad to hear that the video benefited you.
Can I use this to sharpen leather scissors ✂️? Scissors to cut leather..
Hi, I'm thinking about getting the nicer, sturdier sharpeners. Does the sharpener last a long time? Have you needed to replace it?
Hi,Can pinking shears be sharpened with this ?if not can you suggest a solution just bought a set and would like to look after them.
Are all sharpeners handheld? I was looking for an electric one but can’t find such?
I'm thinking of buying this now. Thanks.
can you sharpen an X-acto knife with these
Hi!
So that little sharpener is not good enough? :o I bought scissors last week with che little sharpener, because I remembered your video. Should buy the more expensive sharpener?
I used to have a ShearSharp sharpener, which was pretty good, but I can't find it at the moment!
I know where the shorter bars go, but where do the 2 skinny bars go? Is there a video on putting it back together? The only comments I see are on the small bars.
Nice demo
Very helpful !!
Hi so am guessing this could only sharpen fiskars scissors any recommendations for on that can sharpen all types of scissors thank you
There's no difference. It sharpens any scissors. The brand is just Fiskars.
My new model of fiskars sharpener looks like it has plastic pieces on the inside they are white I can’t touch them but they don’t look shiny and silver or metal like yours? I don’t know if they replaced it with a cheaper piece on the inside or what?
I'm not sure. They might be coated metal pieces, I've seen that on some sharpeners. It's a coating that is kinda like sandpaper. It sharpens in its' own way.
thanks for sharing
My pleasure.
thank you so much for showing this.
+lisabanks100 You're very welcome. I hope it helps you.
you suggested not opening the scissors sharpener, but that's actually why i watched this. I already did and i'm trying to figure out how to reassemble lol. There are two other small rods in there that I don't know what to do with.
Check out one of the comments below with the same issue.
I am having the same problem. Did you find out where the 2 rods went? I don't see a reply. HELP!
The first thing I always do is write "FABRIC" on my orange scissors so my family is clear lol
Awesome idea! It's always a shock to the system whenever I walk in on a family member using my fabric scissors on anything but fabric. :^D
Thank u. Muchas gracias
👍🏼
Full time “tailor” at menswearhouse. I’m a seamstress basically. I just bought this sharpener.... well a version of it.... and non of my scissors ✂️ fit inside it. Kinda sucks.
I used my kitchen scissors to cut mosaic tile backing mesh- so needless to say, they need sharpening now! :-(
Thank you for sharing this video.
Thank you!
You're very welcome! I hope it helps you.
Gosh, I never realised that I was meant to draw my scissors backwards through the handheld sharpener. Thank you for that. I also did not realise the hand held sharpener was coated, I had always presumed the bar was ceramic. My question is, if you are using flat scissors (ie, ones without the micro groove thingies you have on your scissors), do you still get a nice smooth smooth edge with the tabletop sharpener given that the bars are ridged or do you think they might end up with a few burrs?
The bar IS ceramic.
Me sharpening hair cutting scissors 🧍🏼 my fabric scissors are new so
Can fiskar scissor sharpner sharpen any (brand) scissors or it only sharpens fiskar scissors??
It can sharpen any straight edge scissors.
Thanks
Thank you, really helpful!
You're very welcome. I'm glad I can help.
Thank you for sharing.
The tabletop sharpener is actually NOT meant for the RAZOR EDDGE series of scissors such as the pair of fiskars amplify shown in the video. They are a more severe angle and could be damaged if used with a normal scissor sharpener
I was going to suggest the same thing; different types of scissors have different angled bevels on the blades and the angle of this sharpener is fixed so presumably only suitable for the general-purpose scissors.
Update! Fiskars now makes a tabletop sharpener that adjust from regular edge to razor edge! It is distinguished by a white base instead of the black one!
@imperials5507 OMG, thank you so much for your comment! I didn't know there was a difference!!
Thank you.
Thanks!
You're welcome
help help you said that you had taken apart and got it back together well my mother took mine apart and now i can not get it back together i have 4 pieces and i can figure out how to get to back anyway you can explain how to get it back together i searched the web and am coming up empty
+Angela Summers There are two sets of notches inside one of the orange pieces. Each bar is laid across one set of notches. They can move easily, so don't shake the plastic piece. Take the other orange plastic piece and carefully line it up with the other piece. Snap it together. If it doesn't snap together, then the metal bars have shifted and need to be adjusted. That's all there is to it. Good luck.
Thank you! thank you! I was able to get it back together yay!!! I was so worried I had lost it when my mom took it apart and all you saved the day thank you again and have a blessed day :)
+Angela Summers Awesome! I'm glad it worked for you. I was glad to help.
Fiskars table top scissors sharpener
Had both they both brok
I bought two of the FISKARS sharpeners and they do not work. They are useless.
I'm sorry to hear that. They have been nothing but great for us. Having a sewing business, we use them all the time. Is it possible that you're not using them correctly. If you use them wrong, they will dull your scissors, rather than sharpen them. Just something to consider.

If you wanna see how this works skip to 8:15.
You talk too much. 5:03 minutes before you showed using the sharpener. That took 52 seconds.
Could you be any more of a bigger DICK OF A HUMAN BEING?? I know this response
eply from me is about as unnecessary and I’ll admit, a bit immature...but honestly? I JUST COULDN’T HELP MYSELF!! LISTEN “BOB” with the little c, IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER THOUGHT...LET IT GO! AS THE GREAT RON WHITE WOULD SAY! But in the mean time if your so time restricted then make your own
freaken video with your speedy little how to and go crawl back under the rock that obviously fell on your head as a child! Go be a dick to another dough-head such as yourself and leave the kind and helpful people of this world alone! Oh and p.s.....don’t run too fast with your scissors!
These sharpeners aew useless. I've used different sizes, all made for fabric. I would use it, sometimes for 10 ~ 15 minutes with absolutely no results, other then my arm being tired. Waste of money.
you talk too much!
It's an instructional video, what did you expect??
