- Television can be a powerful tool for caregivers to help children navigate self-identity, relationships, and independence. Co-viewing with children can foster bonds and create avenues of discussion. Dr. Amy Franzini studies the representations of children, childhood, parents, and parenting in popular media. She has recently finished writing a book, Secret Identities and Double Lives on Tween TV, that explores how the trope of secret identities on live-action sitcoms targeted to tweens provides a space to explore identity and relationship issues.
Dr. Amy Franzini studies the representations of children, childhood, parents, and parenting in popular media. She has presented her research regularly at the Popular Culture/American Culture Association national conferences and Mid-Atlantic Popular Culture/American Culture Association conferences. Dr. Franzini’s work has been published in several journals, and she has chapters included in Common Sense: Intelligence as Presented on Popular Television and Fleeting Images: Portrayals of Children in Popular Culture. Her forthcoming book, Secret Identities and Double Lives on Tween TV, explores how the trope of secret identities on live-action sitcoms targeted to tweens provides a space for characters to explore identity and relationship issues, which in turn enables tween audiences to consider those same subjects. Dr. Franzini incorporates her research into her teaching in courses such as Media & Children, Visual Literacy, and Communication Theory. Thank you for this smart point of view. I agree 100%. Let's stop blaming TV shows and start parenting better. Let's use it as an oportunity to talk about our values and what is important for us.

My kids never watched TV or any stream alone. Never!
My boy is now 13 and my girl is now 11.
I thank from the bottom of my heart the chance I got to choose and guide their programms as they grow up.
Like the meals, the screen time is a time in family where we sit all together.

As they get age being really well raised since ever....they can do their own choices.
I don't have a need to control them. I just was really focused in choose the best path when they were little.
As years come by being Mother gets only easier. I have nothing to complain of being mom.
Social media and even TV should not be used as a babysitter. Actually parent your kids.

I love this quality presentation on good shows, but my main concern with modern parenting is that they dont fear tv at all. A presentation on what cocomelon and other cheap shows on youtube teach our children is needed. I want to know whether my bad feeling about those is valid if that makes sense. Anyway, great TED talk!
A very inspiring thing in the lecture is that she argues documentaries or other educational programs are not being extremely necessary if parents are finding some "high quality" contents. Most significant factor parents need to be awared is based on the importance of cultivating self-identifies as well as perosnal gratification. That being the case, all programs that helpful in helping children to establish positive identities are valuable to watch.
I think watching can be a bonding experience so you can help understand your child. I think it helps bond with them.
If you need a TV to understand your child , may I suggest a gerbil might be more your thing .

In my case, I am from argentina, and I have a close relation with my girls. We Lunch and dinner toguether and we used to talk a lot. When they have a problem, they seek for my assistance and opinion. So watching tv toguether it is just another thing we share and enjoy. We've watched good shows, we can talk about it without a goal, just for fun 😂
Either one or both of us were present when our son watched TV when he was young. Yes, we both worked full time jobs and after school homework was completed before he was allowed out to play with neighborhood kids. We were fortunate he did not have any learning difficulties. Any of his naughtiness came from his peers in his parochial school. That is the truth. So many kids were placed in parochial because their parents thought they should be disciplined at the school even if it wasn't their religion. By the end of ninth grade we pulled him out and he went to the new public high school. TV just wasn't the center of attention in our house.

It's so sad that people always look for the easy way and the easy answer.
Just like books, games, toys, friends... not every one of this is good for your child.

If im understanding this right, the media is disproportionately owned and the owners have a different understanding of right and wrong compared to their audience base and parents should ony be making content available that was made pre 1950s accessible to their children, got it!

For instance, Spacetoon channel is a huge project has encouraged over 3 million kids to be a doctor, engineering, etc or sharing knowledge to the new generation nowadays. Thanks @Spacetoon ❤. We have a happy memories with Spacetoon channel, it’s also called “the youth of future channel” as one of the those kids, I’m proud of this channel, they called us “the youth of the future” and trusted us. I’m a teacher now.

Children now need close monitoting on what they chose to watch. Today's toxic media, brainwashing, and, LGBTQXYZ radicalization should be a major source of concern for parents.
