Dola Maru: The Eternal Love Story of Rajasthan।।

The son of King Nala of Narwar, known in history as Dhola, was married in his childhood to Marvani, the daughter of King Pingal, a ruler of Poongal in Janglu region (Bikaner). At that time, Dhola was three years old, and Marvani was only a year and a half. Therefore, after their marriage, Marvani was not sent to Narwar with Dhola. When they grew up, Dhola married another woman, Malvani. Dhola had nearly forgotten about the marriage that took place in his childhood. Meanwhile, when Marvani came of age, her parents sent several messages to Narwar, asking Dhola to come and take her. Dhola's second wife, Malvani, found out about his first marriage, and she also learned that no one was as beautiful as Marvani. Driven by jealousy and envy, she did not allow any message from King Pingal to reach Dhola. She would have the messengers killed before they could deliver the messages to Dhola.
On the other hand, Marvani’s youthful beauty began to bloom. One day, she saw her beloved Dhola in a dream, and after that, she yearned for him. She lost interest in food and other activities. Seeing her condition, her mother urged King Pingal to send another message to Dhola. This time, King Pingal thought, “Malvani gets the messengers killed, so why not send a clever singer (Dholi) to Narwar, who can deliver the message through songs and remind Dhola of his marriage with Marvani?” When the singer was about to depart for Narwar, Marvani called him over, composed a few couplets in the Maru Raag, and instructed him on how to sing them in front of Dhola. The singer promised Marvani that he would either bring Dhola back or would stay in Narwar forever if he died in the process.
The clever singer, disguised as a beggar, managed to reach Dhola’s palace in Narwar. As night fell, he began to sing loudly. That night, the sky was overcast, lightning flashed in the dark night, and a gentle drizzle set a calm atmosphere. In such delightful weather, the singer began singing in the Malhar Raag, and the sweet melody echoed in Dhola’s ears, making him sway like a snake rising to the tune. As soon as the singer mentioned Poongal and Marvani in his song, Dhola was startled, and memories of his childhood marriage were rekindled. The singer described Marvani’s beauty in the Malhar and Maru Raags as vividly as if reading it from a book. Listening to this, Dhola was deeply moved.
The singer sang throughout the night. In the morning, Dhola summoned him, and the singer conveyed Marvani's message, describing how she was suffering in his absence. Finally, Dhola decided to go to Poongal to bring Marvani back. However, Malvani tried to stop him. Dhola made several excuses, but Malvani managed to stop him each time. One day, though, Dhola mounted a very fast camel and set off to fetch Marvani, eventually reaching Poongal. Marvani was overjoyed to reunite with Dhola. The two spent several days in Poongal, and one day, Dhola took Marvani with him on his camel and bid farewell to King Pingal to return to Narwar.
