  • The intake ports on these heads needed a little adjustment to be made better. They weren’t quite round. Ply’s making two springs into one.

    Those heads look nice.

I think so too! I’m hoping to get a little more torque and help it run a little cooler.

The single springs by themselves should be what they call single high rev springs. This would allow a smaller camshaft like under 420 lift. (which is big enough for a lot of applications). Honestly Ron.....Please please put a small performance camshaft in there. Looks like your building a 1600 from the head opening. this will help get a better air fuel volume in the combustion chamber which will help the engine run cooler and more efficient. The stock cams were way too small on these engines. If you want to go on the cheap you can get a reground 100 cam from Brothers VW machine shop in Ontario CA.....and reground lifters. These are super reliable. The cam grind is very close to a web 86 without ratio rockers. (even though it is called a w100 uggg) It works well with smaller engines and gives you that top end and midrange your wanting. Those heads look like the 57cc Autolinia castings. They use good aluminum. check your ccs. I think it might be a bit low compression for stock application. will run like a bag of nuts. Stock was around 50cc with a 57cc your compression will be 7.0. Like a 40hp... So what I would do is get those head machined out for 90.5 and put a 74 stroke in there to get the compression ratio around 8 to 8.25 and use a performance cam. Stock carb. then it will run great. Use the CB performance engine calculator this will help you see what I am talking about. Like an 88 thick wall with 74 crank will work OK with those heads. still a bit low compression if you go stock deck height. IF you want you can get stock length clearanced rods and a 74 crank and step cut the heads. Then use a tighter deck height. This would get you there. Those larger CC heads are designed for larger displacement engines. I am not sure why they even sell them in 85.5 openings.

Thanks for the advice. This is exactly what I need. I responded to this on another comment you left. Let me know what you think of my setup. Like I said I’m using 88 slip ins (which I know is a no,no) but I’m keeping my fingers crossed and doing everything else to help it run cooler) . The compression came in at 7.6. I’m running stock cam and stock crank. I am however putting in a two barrel progressive carb and I plan on only running premium fuel.

@@jachoftrades6t8 Well I will just give you the bad news.....But better to be straight foreword. I think I will make a video on this subject just to help others with these situations. the power you gain with 88s you will loose with needing to retard the timing to stop the engine from running hot. and it still will run hot. Secondly I would just simply take apart what you have done and put a performance cam in there. Send the heads out to be opened to 90.5 92. and get some thick wall cylinders. CC it all for 8.25 which will run GREAT.....On the cheap get one of those so called engle 100 cams from Brothers VW machine shop That would be fine. if you want a new cam option you could use the C20 scat. which would give you about the same results. ad ratio rockers to 1.25 and it will really pull hard. Personally I just would have started different. the weak point on the VW is the cam. Stock cams are just completely useless IMO. The extra advance built into the performance ones is way better. If you want a bit of pickup start with a 74 and short rods. All counterweighted which is just plain better. If you have good stock crank and rods the options I said before would work OK.

@@Mikefngarage I really appreciate the straight talk. I really kinda jumped the gun on the parts that I bought and the work I have in it at this point. I do respect your opinion and have no reason to doubt what you’re saying, unfortunately I have to send it at this point. I’ll get it together for now. The whole thing is a learning experience at this point and I do intend on taking what I’m learning and applying it to another build in the near future. (Probably sooner than I have intended )

Honestly ... this has to be the most painful, hand-held shot and posted video on RUclips.
By a friggin tripod or something.
      But please stop blogging
This hand-help video is "WORST" crap on here ...

Since I have no way of measuring the poundage I’m rolling the dice on just using the larger spring by itself.
