As a practicing catholic, the only person I respect on that panel is the one and only catholic hating athiest the late Christopher Hitchens. Because he was the only consistent and geniune person there, the rest are wishy washers! My favorite bit is seeing Aly lose his incoherent thoughts and waffle about! My second fav bit is when Christopher called the so called cultural catholics out on their idiocy

Just because he gave nuance doesn't mean he didn't answer it. He said, "undoubtedly, if you polled the Muslim world, most would say it's a sin" -- he was very clear and honest about that fact. He just also gave a bit of context and nuance that obviously went over your head

Slippery and deceitful as always, Aly forgot to mention that every islamic nation has criminalized homosexual acts, ten of those countries mandate the killing of people for homosexual acts. It's not coincidence, nor is it evidence of ongoing discussion. In fact there are moronic quranic verses and rambling hadiths which EXPLICITLY condemn same sex activity. But paralyzed by cultural inanity nobody, bizarrely not even Hitchens, challenged the liar.

Of course I have read the Bible. You obviously haven't. Your ignorance is showing. I
FYI Jesus takes slavery as a given. To tell slaves to rebel ,would be a contradiction of the non-violence principle within Christianity. The early anti-slave campaigners were extremely devout Christians who opposed it on the 'do unto others' instruction in the NT.
FYI The Old Testament was written hundreds of years before Christianity existed. It is addressed to the ancient Jews, who were a small ethnic/religious/political group fighting for their little bit of territory in the Middle East. It gives the Jews, and no one else, instructions on how they are to treat specific NAMED enemies.@@xxMrBaldyxx

No, it doesn't, It just takes it for granted. Freeing a slave can leave him destitute, and Jesus couldn't advocate that slaves rebel against their owners. To do so would contradict his whole 'turn the other cheek' philosophy.

I am a Muslim and I agree with Hitchens. Islam teaches that homosexuality is a sin and Waleed Aly is trying to keep his job by fudging his response. And despite "taking a poll of Muslims" whether it be 50/50 it is about what Islam teaches and what it teaches is that it is forbidden and punishable. Where Hitchens cashes out is that he claims incorrectly that the first port of call in punishment is death and that simply not correct. To find two men guilty of having sex and then activating the ruling of death would be extremely difficult in the extreme, where multiple parts of the crime must be proven and those different parts again in the extreme.
You have to have 4 eye witnesses whose testimonies MUST be exactly THE SAME, if they're not the "witnesses" are in big trouble. The western audiences who engage in discussing this topic are poisoned with too many preconceptions that are not true.
Finally, it is NOT a sin to be a homosexual in Islam, but it is a sin to be actively homosexual. And whilst it is a major sin, upon repentance to ALLAH it is forgiven. Anything else has nothing to do with anyone else.

Waleed Aly is an absolute piece of poo. He contends he holds the moral high ground and that Islam is unfairly targeted by those who would criticise it. He would argue that there are many forms of Islam, not only sects but also within those sects. What he fails to tell you is that the Quran is the absolute word of God and has to be followed, and if a Sunni, the same applies to the books of the Sunnah. You might as well include the Sira and the Hadiths as well - well some of them anyway. If scholars, in different sects, do not like certain Hadiths they will deem them weak and of little consequence. This is Islamic interpretation at its best. The point I am attempting to make is that these books are the central government. "True Muslims" adhere to them for political, social, and religious guidance and direction. They adhere to Islamic abrogation. The scholars tell them abrogation exists and that Muhammad's revelations and actions in Medina supersede those that occurred in Mecca. Yet the picture that is portrayed to non Muslims is that of Muhammad in Mecca. I am sorry but this is just more Islamic deceit and they are the kings of deceit. Waleed you are a wanker and full of deceit or you are just ignorant. In which case, if the latter, you should not be on these shows championing the cause of Islam.

5:15 their is some manifesto you can download from the net. It's called the Quran, and Muslims widely consider it the word of Allah himself. And the answer is "yes, Islam considers homosexuality a sin."

Waleed is a terrible liar. What he's in effect saying is that Islam is whatever you want it to be.
Take Jihad - there's a consistent opinion that it's to do with war, across all four Islamic schools of jurisprudence, across the life of Islam.
That consensus shows what Islam teaches

Waleed Aly is an educated and intelligent man, but he is trapped within the confines of an archaic, man-made philosophy from 1400 years ago, one that should never have made it past the dark ages. In a democratic society such as ours, more tolerant and open to freedom of speech, belief and action than most in the world, Aly has the chance to cast aside the superstitious, dogmatic straightjacket he wears. But this requires honest self-examination and a preparedness to think individually, something for which the adherents of Islam are not well known. The same goes for other religious organisations - these comments are not aimed solely at Islam. Faith based religions are relics of the past and as cognisant beings we need to grow up and embrace the future without mystical props and fear of divine retribution. The late great Christopher Hitchens would have annihilated Aly in a one-on-one conversation on the matter. We all know that, and I have no doubt that Aly also knows it. Aly must have breathed a huge sigh of relief that he was protected from Hitchens’ full force by the rapid soundbite formula of Q&A, which prevents any attempt at comprehensive discussion. Christopher Hitchens, you are sorely missed. By the way, we are still waiting for your answer on whether homosexuality is a sin Waleed Aly...
