What a treat to see someone designing and working in terms I can relate to! Having been born in the first half of the twentieth century, I've never been all that at home with computers and the like, and CNC and 3D printing are absolutely alien to me (perhaps it's the way my brain is wired). To find someone using paper and pencil and hand tools has absolutely made my day. I've subscribed and am looking forward to exploring a lot more of your output. Long live the drawing board and square.
I would be hard pressed to do it any other way.
His name is Lou Sauzedde. Saw - ZED Tips from a Shipwright. What you have modeled is very similar to a Seabright skiff. That is called a rolled garboard. 'Boxed keels' were also used in larger seabright skiffs but they are different than what you have.
Boxed keel is just a phrase I made up to refer to this particular construction. I realize there are other variations using the same term. And yes, I cannot seem to not murder Lou's last name. Just won't stick in my head.
awesome to see how you do your half-hulls. Bob Emser (the Art of Boat Building here on youtube) had a few episode series where he built one for Acorn to Arabella's tender. It's great to see two different ways to accomplish the same thing.
I also us the same technique Bob does but I occasionally work from just a solid block like this as well. Kind of depends if I am working from a finished full set of lines or developing a set of lines.
@@Nomadboatbuilding appreciate the context. I appreciate both styles, really. it's always good to know when one method or another is more beneficial to the overarching design.
That horizontal edge sander is a really nice.piece.
It was one of those game changer machines that I wish I had purchased many years earlier. Now I want one dedicated to metal work.
wow a just starte the boat buldinge and you are my number one in this jod thnx for all
Happy to hear that!

How do I get the half hull drawing? Great video!
I reckon you'd get seasick, Mark, if the workpiece were actually to stay still. I'd be in a real pickle if my bench moved around like yours does. Anyway, great little episode, and it looks like it's going to be a sweet boat.
I really need to do something about that bench. It's heavy as hell but if you move it an inch the floor levellers go out of whack and she starts rocking. I don't notice it too much until I see it on video.
Hi This is going to be a good series, ( be hard to top the 2.4M) . Is it possible for mid-ship heights at the STEM, MID FRAME, STERN to give an idea of the side view shape.
I like the Bow Shape.
It is a perfect explanation in how to use a ship model - ( have you seen the model room at RCYC? )
It is possible to derive the profile from the dimensions you refer to but there may be nuances that are not recorded with just the three points.
I know of the model room, seen pictures, but have never visited there.
They are push pins a thumbtack has a domed metal head
5:17 "shipsweep" is that somthing you made your self or did you buy that from a drafting suply place?
Purchased. If you do an Amazon search for that term they should pop up. About $30 for a set.
“What are we going to do with this thing?” Hmmmmm…… how about a 283 Chevy small block? That should give you all the knots you would ever want 🤪!
I had a friend from Cape Breton who told me young guys were always trying to overpower lobster boats and would sometimes end up sinking them in the process of giving them full throttle.
At first it made no sense to me what you were doing with the tracing paper on the cedar. The beverage I was consuming may have being clouding my vision. Once you started shaping the block, Eureka. Pity you had to paint the model, as the knots would have been nice with a coat of oil. I dont like them in the work zone but they can add a nice piece of interest to a varnished or oiled timber.
You should check out the Trend stealth P3R mask. Its only a dust mask, you cant use vapour filters on it. But its light and doesn't intrude into your vision. Very easy to breath in too. I bought one recently, very reasonably priced and comfy to wear. I wish I'd had one years ago.
The model was just for visualization and painting it is the best way to see what you have produced. I have models done up for looks but few of them were made to really aid the building or design process.
Hi In the Vlog you make reference to other boatbuilders good friends - is it possible to update the SHOW MORE area with links. Have slight hearing difficulties and is hard to follow. Thanks.
Sorry about that. I've added links to those channels in the video description.
where do I get this half hull plan?
I could send you a scan of one of the sketches if you want to play around with making a model of it.
Lou Sherazad?
Louis Sauzedde - I can never remember it correctly. Tough name to nail down.
I don't understand how you know your lines are true. It looks like you winged the whole shape.
(this is not a critique - I'm just not getting it)
I pretty much did wing the whole shape, but it was informed by a few elements from the sketches. It was an exercise in visualization. Just to get a general sense of the form and understand how the formation of the tuck would marry with the rest of the hull. I’m not pulling any dimensions off the model so I don’t need to be that close.
@@Nomadboatbuilding Knowing more than I did when I asked my question, I now realize that some designers do just what you did; appear to just wing it, not any old kind of winging, but informed winging!
@@jthepickle7 Now you get it.
What did you build? A boat for ants? How can we expect people to sail in the boat if they cant even fit in it.
We may be forced to build a much larger version. Stay tuned.

I would like to formally recognize this reference. Worthy of the blue steel stamp of approval
