  • Nearly 30 years ago, Yves Gelinas sailed solo around the world in his Alberg 30 sailboat, Jean-du-Sud. As a filmmaker, Yves found funding for his trip by creating a feature-length film of his journey, both behind and in front of the camera. I saw "With Jean-du-Sud Around the World" in the early 80's when he came to Annapolis and showcased it at a Windjammers presentation.
I caught up with Yves in Oct 2009 at the Annapolis Sailboat Show. He allowed me to interview him, and as usual, I've got more projects on the back burner than I have time to complete. Rather than sit on the footage longer, I thought I'd simply share the raw footage, with the hopes I may be able to return to the project in the future.

i could listen to stories like this all day, its the little details that I like most, the strength of the shroud attachments - the length of tabbing to the hull, all important things that only experience can teach.

Nice seeing Yves again. He stopped by my boat when he was in Seattle in the 90's. I have carried one of his self steering rigs for 20,000 ocean miles. Can't say I used it much but I carry it.

Awesome! I met Yves about 15 years ago and have watched his film many times. Having owned an A30, I am especially endeared to his many accomplishments both on and off the water

this is a great interview. I've seen the film many times and it's really nice to be able to see him later in life. I love his comments about art vs. sailing.

I would give my boat up just to meet yves gelinas. I remember downloading it.I had really just started to learn how to sail and was keen to get off around the world:-) looking back lucky I didn't set sail that day:-)I'd be dead now. Instead I watched yves film I felt as if I were on his voyage with him how many films now could that to you none! It's takes courage to take a boat to sea alone. So Yves if you ever read this i thank you for a timeless film and for making me a better sailor.

Nice work Brian. I too am a filmmaker and sailor and live/work in Camden Maine. My friends and I have been recently introduced to this movie and are becoming big fans of this man. I'm so happy that he talks about the camera in the kite and how that came to be, since, it was something that intrigued me and that I'd like to try. Of course, nowadays I can just take my little Go Pro and it's not so difficult. I, personally, like watching all the raw footage and feel that it holds up on it's own

Excellent! Being an A30 owner myself, this is very interesting. What are your plans for publishing the rest of your footage you mention on the A30 list?
